Diagnosis Of Hepatoma Using Grayscale And Doppler Ultrasound In Patients With Chronic Liver Disease., W. Memon, Zishan Haider, Mirza Amanullah Beg, Muhammad Idris, Tanveer Ul Haq, Sidra Idris

Department of Radiology

Objective:To determine the diagnostic accuracy of liver ultrasound for the detection of hepatoma in chronic liver disease (CLD) Patients by either taking histopathology or serum alpha-fetoprotein levels or a biphasic computed tomography (CT) scan (whichever is available) as the gold standard. Study Design: Cross-sectional. Place And Duration Of Study: Radiology Department, The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, from January 2007 to January 2010.

Methods:

A total of 239 Patients (156 males and 83 females) with clinical suspicion or surveillance of hepatoma in CLD referred to the radiology department for ultrasound evaluation followed by either liver biopsy and histopathology …

The Role Of Computed Tomography For Identifying Mechanical Bowel Obstruction In A Pakistani Population, Omair Shakil, Syed Nabeel Zafar, Ziaur Rehman, Sarah Saleem, Rehmatullah Khan, Khawaja Muhammad Inam Pal Sep 2011

The Role Of Computed Tomography For Identifying Mechanical Bowel Obstruction In A Pakistani Population, Omair Shakil, Syed Nabeel Zafar, Ziaur Rehman, Sarah Saleem, Rehmatullah Khan, Khawaja Muhammad Inam Pal

Section of General Surgery

Objective: To retrospectively review our experience of CT scan in cases with a final diagnosis of surgically confirmed mechanical bowel obstruction.
Methods: It is a retrospective analytical study, done from 2003 to 2008. All adult patients having undergone laparotomy in addition to a preoperative abdominal CT scan over a 5 year period were identified through the medical records and their case notes reviewed. Taking surgery to be the gold standard for diagnosing mechanical bowel obstruction, we compared results of the CT with operative findings to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of CT scans. The data was …

Triphasic Computed Tomography (Ct) Scan In Focal Tumoral Liver Lesions, Saima Hafeez, Muhammad Shahbaz Alam, Zafar Sajjad, Zahid Anwar Khan, Waseem Akhter, Fatima Mubarak Jun 2011

Triphasic Computed Tomography (Ct) Scan In Focal Tumoral Liver Lesions, Saima Hafeez, Muhammad Shahbaz Alam, Zafar Sajjad, Zahid Anwar Khan, Waseem Akhter, Fatima Mubarak

Department of Radiology

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of triphasic spiral CT in differentiating benign from malignant focal tumoral liver lesions.

METHODS: The study was conducted in Department of Radiology of Aga Khan University Hospital and Sind Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Karachi from Feb 2006 to Feb 2007. By convenient sampling, 45 patients found to have focal tumoral liver lesions were recruited for one year period and their triphasic CT scans findings were evaluated and later correlated with histopathology. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic accuracy of triphasic CT scan were calculated.

RESULTS: Among 45 patients, 136 …

Religious Experiences Shrink Part Of The Brain, Andrew Newberg, M.D. May 2011

Religious Experiences Shrink Part Of The Brain, Andrew Newberg, M.D.

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

A study links life-changing religious experiences, like being born again, with atrophy in the hippocampus.

The article, “Religious factors and hippocampal atrophy in late life,” by Amy Owen and colleagues at Duke University represents an important advance in our growing understanding of the relationship between the brain and religion. The study showed greater atrophy in the hippocampus in individuals who identify with specific religious groups as well as those with no religious affiliation. It is a surprising result, given that many prior studies have shown religion to have potentially beneficial effects on brain function, anxiety, and depression.

Assessing Doppler-Derived Pressure Gradients And Liver Echogenicity To Predict Liver Disease, Joy D. Guthrie Jan 2011

Assessing Doppler-Derived Pressure Gradients And Liver Echogenicity To Predict Liver Disease, Joy D. Guthrie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Liver disease causes an estimated 36,000 deaths in the United States each year. Currently, to detect liver disease, an invasive biopsy is required. Other, less invasive diagnostic alternatives are needed. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of a modified form of sonographic screening, including portal, hepatic, and splenic venous pressure, hepatic venous waveform analysis, portal vein diameter, and echogenicity of liver parenchyma in predicting liver disease. The study was based on conversion of a velocity measurement to a pressure gradient, allowing a fluid comparison between known catheterization venous pressures and sonographic Doppler-derived pressure gradients. This study …
