Critical Success Factors For Adopting Telemedicine Applications, Arjen Maris, Anas Yousfi, Stefan V. Ramshorst, Pascal Ravesteyn

Communications of the IIMA

The use of IT within healthcare is increasing, but at a slow rate. In complex projects like the implementation of a telemedicine application within the context of physiotherapy processes where both practitioners and patients use the application, it is still unclear what factors should be taken into consideration for a successful adoption. Therefore, the research question for this study is: ‘what are the critical success factors for adopting a telemedicine application for primary physiotherapists and their patients within the Netherlands?’ A literature study is performed followed by a thematic analysis to determine the factors that are relevant for adoption of …

The Nationwide Health Information Network: The Case Of The Expansion Of Health Information Exchanges In The United States, Morgan Ruley, Victoria Walker, Jana Studeny, Alberto Coustasse Sep 2018

The Nationwide Health Information Network: The Case Of The Expansion Of Health Information Exchanges In The United States, Morgan Ruley, Victoria Walker, Jana Studeny, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

The Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) implemented secure exchange of health records through utilization of the Internet. NHIN has greatly assisted in achieving the goals of the HITECH Act by promoting the adoption of Meaningful Use. Epic introduced a Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform, Care Everywhere (CE), which has facilitated HIE availability. The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of NHIN and Epic Care’s CE on healthcare to determine whether their use in the ED has increased. The methodology for this study utilized a literature review. Twenty-nine sources were referenced for this study. With the NHIN implementation, …

Clinician Satisfaction With In-House And Cloud-Based Ehr Vendors, Massara Alazazi, Jun Sun, Nan Xiao

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the factors that affect clinician satisfaction with electronic health records (EHR) vendors that provide in-house and cloud-based solutions. The study is concerned with the organizational level of different healthcare organizations. The model combines the IS Success model and the Task Technology Fit model, to best fit the health information systems. Five research hypotheses derived from the model and are going to be empirically tested using a field survey of EHR systems characteristics and its influence on the organization’s tasks achievement and mission alignment.

Coping Strategies Among Caregivers Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Cluster Analysis, Noor Ismael, Lisa Mische Lawson, Murad Moqbel, Lauren Little

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction/Background: The variability in coping strategies among caregivers of children with ASD may contribute to broader health outcomes; however, it is unclear if specific coping strategies are related to overall strain in this population. Therefore, this study identified groups of caregivers based on coping mechanisms and investigated differences in strain among groups.

Materials & Methods: This study utilized a secondary data analysis, and included survey responses of 273 caregivers of children with ASD. Measures consisted of the COPE Inventory, and the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire. Data analyses consisted of cluster analysis to group caregiver coping strategies, and Analysis of Variance to …

Is Information Systems Misuse Always Bad? A New Perspective On Is Misuse In Hospitals Under The Context Of Disasters, Dheyaaldin Alsalman Jul 2018

Is Information Systems Misuse Always Bad? A New Perspective On Is Misuse In Hospitals Under The Context Of Disasters, Dheyaaldin Alsalman

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Although the extant literature has investigated how individuals engage in inappropriate behaviors based on the rational choice theory (RCT) (e.g., computer misconduct), the neutralization theory (e.g., IS security policies violation), and workarounds under normal situations, it has given little consideration to how individuals are involved in misuse of information systems with a good intention under the context of disasters. To fill this research gap, we propose a selfless misuse model, which offers a theoretical explanation for the concept of individuals’ selfless misuse intention under uncertainty caused by disasters. In this study, we show why employees make decisions to misuse the …

Telepharmacy And Access To Pharmaceutical Services In Rural Areas, Raghav Sarkar, Brandon J. Metzger, Hannah M. Sayre, Chelsea M. Slater, Sruthi Katamneni, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Access to pharmaceutical services in rural areas has been affected by a national shortage of pharmacists. Telepharmacy, a subspecialty of telemedicine, has involved the utilization of telecommunications to deliver pharmaceutical services to consumers located at a distance. The number of telepharmacy programs in the United States and worldwide has been progressively increasing. The purpose of this research project was to examine the effect of the utilization of telepharmacy on rural hospitals’ access to pharmaceutical services. The methodology of this qualitative study was a literature review. Four electronic databases were employed to retrieve peer-reviewed journal articles, and three websites were accessed …

Reducing Sepsis Mortality: A Cloud-Based Alert Approach, Janet A. Zink Jan 2018

Reducing Sepsis Mortality: A Cloud-Based Alert Approach, Janet A. Zink

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of a cloud-based CDS alerting system for SIRS, a precursor to sepsis, and sepsis itself, on adult patient and process outcomes at VCU Health System. The two main hypotheses are: 1) the implementation of cloud-based SIRS and sepsis alerts will lead to lower sepsis-related mortality and lower average length of stay, and 2) the implementation of cloud-based SIRS and sepsis alerts will lead to more frequent ordering of the Sepsis PowerPlan and more recording of sepsis diagnoses. To measure these outcomes, a pre-post study was conducted. A pre-implementation group diagnosed …

Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters, Erin M. Boggs Jan 2018

Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters, Erin M. Boggs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) Crews lack an injury surveillance program to collect information on non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. Tactical athletes including: police, military and structural firefighters all have a variety of collection systems in place for injury data collection. The lack of injury data prevents WLFF crews from identifying high-risk environments, implementing injury prevention programs, and improving the overall quality of care on the job. Over the last several decades the recent rise in wildfire occurrences and wildfire suppression costs creates a need for healthy and strong individuals in the field. The cost of firefighter salaries and medical care can be …
