Treated Hypothyroidism Is Associated With Cerebrovascular Disease But Not Alzheimer's Disease Pathology In Older Adults, Willa D. Brenowitz, Fang Han, Walter A. Kukull, Peter T. Nelson

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

Thyroid hormone (TH) disease is common among older adults and is associated with cognitive impairment. However, pathologic correlates are not well understood. We studied pathologic and clinical factors associated with hypothyroidism, the most common form of TH disease, in research subjects seen annually for clinical evaluations at U.S. Alzheimer’s Disease Centers. Thyroid disease and treatment status were assessed during clinician interviews. Among autopsied subjects, there were 555 participants with treated hypothyroidism and 2,146 with no known thyroid disease; hypothyroidism was associated with severe atherosclerosis (OR=1.35 95% CI: 1.02, 1.79) but not Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathologies (amyloid plaques or neurofibrillary tangles). …

Background

Great heterogeneity exists in survival and the interval between onset of motor symptoms and dementia symptoms across synucleinopathies. We aimed to identify genetic and pathological markers that have the strongest association with these features of clinical heterogeneity in synucleinopathies.

Methods

In this retrospective study, we examined symptom onset, and genetic and neuropathological data from a cohort of patients with Lewy body disorders with autopsy-confirmed α synucleinopathy (as of Oct 1, 2015) who were previously included in other studies from five academic institutions in five cities in the USA. We used histopathology techniques and markers to assess the burden of …

Imp3 Expression Is Associated With Poor Outcome And Epigenetic Deregulation In Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma, Yuanyuan Gao, Michelle Yang, Zhong Jiang, Bruce A. Woda, Arthur M. Mercurio, Jianjie Qin, Xinli Huang, Feng Zhang Nov 2014

Imp3 Expression Is Associated With Poor Outcome And Epigenetic Deregulation In Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma, Yuanyuan Gao, Michelle Yang, Zhong Jiang, Bruce A. Woda, Arthur M. Mercurio, Jianjie Qin, Xinli Huang, Feng Zhang

Arthur M. Mercurio

IMP3 is a fetal protein not expressed in normal adult tissues. IMP3 is an oncoprotein and a useful biomarker for a variety of malignancies and is associated with reduced overall survival of a number of them. IMP3 expression and its prognostic value for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) have not been well investigated. The molecular mechanism underlying IMP3 expression in human cancer cells remains to be elucidated. Here we investigated IMP3 expression in ICC and adjacent nonneoplastic liver in 72 unifocal primary ICCs from a single institute by immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, and real-time polymerase chain reaction. IMP3 was specifically expressed in …

Sessile Serrated Adenomas In The Proximal Colon Are Likely To Be Flat, Large And Occur In Smokers, Tarun Rustagi, Priya Rangasamy, Matthew Myers, Melinda Sanders, Haleh Vaziri, George Y. Wu, John W. Birk, Petr Protiva, Joseph C. Anderson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Aim: To examine the epidemiology and the morphology of the proximal sessile serrated adenomas (SSAs).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to identify patients with SSAs using a university-based hospital pathology database query from January 2007 to April 2011. Data collected included: age, gender, ethnicity, body mass index, diabetes, smoking, family history of colorectal cancer, aspirin, and statin use. We collected data on morphology of SSAs including site (proximal or distal), size, and endoscopic appearance (flat or protuberant). We also compared proximal SSAs to proximal tubular adenomas detected during same time period.

Multi-wavelength Near-Infrared (NIR) Tomography was utilized in this study to non-invasively quantify physiological parameters of breast tumors using direct spectral reconstruction. Frequency domain NIR measurements were incorporated with a new spectrally constrained direct chromophore and scattering image reconstruction algorithm, which was validated in simulations and experimental phantoms. Images of total hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water, and scatter parameters were obtained with higher accuracy than previously reported. Using this spectral approach, in vivo NIR images are presented and interpreted through a series of case studies (n=6 subjects) having differing abnormalities. The corresponding mammograms and ultrasound images are also evaluated. Three of six …
