Background: High levels of physical activity are associated with reduced risk of the blood cancer multiple myeloma (MM). MM is preceded by the asymptomatic stages of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smouldering multiple myeloma (SMM) which are clinically managed by watchful waiting. A case study (N = 1) of a former elite athlete aged 44 years previously indicated that a multi-modal exercise programme reversed SMM disease activity. Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), has been associated with several cancer risks in observational studies, but the observed associations have been inconsistent and may face the bias of confounding and reverse causality. The potential causal relationships between IBD and the risk of cancers remain largely unclear. Less is known about changes in achievement motivation. Prostate cancer survivors treated with androgen deprivation therapy may be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Dietary recommendations for the prevention and/or management of cardiovascular disease for these individuals are lacking. This review synthesizes the evidence on the effect of dietary interventions on cardiometabolic biomarkers and cardiovascular disease risk in prostate cancer survivors receiving androgen deprivation therapy. Background: Statins are a cost-effective therapy for prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Guidelines on statins for primary prevention are unclear for older adults (>75 years).
Objective: Investigate statin utility in older adults without ASCVD events, by risk stratifying in a large healthcare network.
Methods: We included 8,114 older adults, without CAD, PVD or ischemic stroke. Statin utilization based on ACC/AHA 10-year ASCVD risk calculation, was evaluated in intermediate (7.5%-19.9%) and high-risk patients (≥ 20%); and categorized using low and 'moderate or high' intensity statins with a follow up period of ∼7 years. It is estimated that 30% of patients with compensated cirrhosis and 60% of patients with decompensated cirrhosis will develop varices in their lifetime, with an incidence rate of new varices at 9% per year. Fifty percent of patients with esophageal varices will experience bleeding at some time. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease. Studying the effects of drug treatments on multiple health outcomes related to AD could be beneficial in demonstrating which drugs reduce the disease burden and increase survival.

Methods

We conducted a comprehensive causal inference study implementing doubly robust estimators and using one of the largest high-quality medical databases, the Oracle Electronic Health Records (EHR) Real-World Data. Atrial fibrillation, also known as A-Fib or AF, is a cardiovascular abnormality that is characterized by an abnormal heart rhythm or muscle contractions in the atria. These abnormalities are a result of disorganized electrical impulses. AF has various causes including, but not limited to, hypertension (HTN), heart surgery, thyroid disorders, heart defects, and acute alcohol ingestion. Persons with AF are often asymptomatic; however, some patients report heart palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness. A review of literature was conducted in order to determine the availability of risk factors, patient education, and treatment of AF.

Introduction: The use of metal stabilizers in minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair (MIPER) has been previously associated with multiple postoperative complications. We aimed to identify if bilateral metal stabilizers increase the risk of incision complications when compared to unilateral stabilizers.

Introduction: Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) was previously standard for postoperative pain control in children with perforated appendicitis at our institution. We previously reported the equivocal outcome of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen as a pain control adjunct used to transition from PCA to oral narcotics. We have since transitioned to a PCA-free, multi-modal pain control regimen postoperatively in perforated appendicitis. Through observational study, we aim to describe the impact of our new pain control regimen on postoperative narcotic use.

Problem: Lymphedema is a chronic condition that develops secondary to cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical removal of affected lymph nodes. This swelling in patient’s limbs can cause discomfort and limit mobility, however lymphedema is often not detected until later stages, delaying treatment and patient education.

Context: This quality improvement project was conducted at Hospital S Women’s Cancer Center, an outpatient center specializing in advanced treatments for breast and gynecological cancers. This center has a multidisciplinary team focusing on both the medical and surgical aspects of oncology treatment.

Screening for health-related social needs (HRSNs) is recommended as part of routine diabetes care given the impact of social factors on health outcomes.

Youth presenting to a tertiary diabetes center will have different diabetes-related health outcomes based on positive or negative HRSNs screenings at routine clinic visits.

Baseline data were collected from patients whose parent/guardian completed a HRSN screen as part of their child’s diabetes clinic intake from 9/1/21 to 8/30/22. Early implementation of palliative care in pediatric oncology is well established but its role in pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) patients is yet to be fully determined. Multiple organizations encourage palliative care involvement in HSCT patients. Our aim was to increase palliative care team consults for patients receiving HSCT for our targeted diagnosis. Though we did not achieve this aim, we were able to increase the palliative care team's involvement in the total cohort of patients undergoing HSCT.

This qualitative phenomenological study explored and described the shared experiences of individuals impacted by an autoimmune disease and their exposure to adverse childhood experiences. The theory guiding this study was Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory, utilizing Kaiser Permanente’s Adverse Childhood Experience study as a guide to create awareness amongst physicians and mental health professionals, leading them to a more holistic approach when treating patients affected by an autoimmune disease. This was a qualitative study using Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology (TPh). The data collection methods used in the study included questionnaires, individual interviews, and document analysis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence and the reported use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. We also investigated the possible effects of age on the aforementioned variables. The total sample consisted of 379 people (158 men, 220 women, 1 unreported). Across participants, 273 were young (20-39 years old) and 106 were middle-aged (40-65 years old).
