Signal Transduction Mechanisms Mediating The Regulation Of Vascular G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Elena Tutunea-Fatan
Signal Transduction Mechanisms Mediating The Regulation Of Vascular G Protein-Coupled Receptors, Elena Tutunea-Fatan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Blood pressure homeostasis is controlled via a complex network of cell signaling mechanisms. Among the broad network of receptors and signaling molecules regulating blood vessel reactivity, members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family are known to play a central role. GPCR activity represents a delicate, but coordinated balance between molecular mechanisms governing receptor signaling, desensitization, and re-sensitization. GPCR kinase 2 (GRK2) modulates multiple cellular responses through GPCR desensitization and alterations in GRK2 activity are considered to play an important role in the development of hypertension. The main premise of our study was to test whether the inhibition of GRK2 …

Background Raised blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney disease. We estimated worldwide trends in mean systolic and mean diastolic blood pressure, and the prevalence of, and number of people with, raised blood pressure, defined as systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or higher or diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or higher. Methods For this analysis, we pooled national, subnational, or community population-based studies that had measured blood pressure in adults aged 18 years and older. We used a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate trends from 1975 to 2015 in mean …

Background and objectives: Prior studies suggested that women with CKD have higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality than men, although putative mechanisms for this higher risk have not been identified. We assessed sex differences in (1) CVD risk factors and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and (2) the relationship of left ventricular mass (LVM) with different measures of body size in children with CKD.
Design, setting, participants, and measurements: The study population comprised 681 children with CKD from the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children cohort, contributing 1330 visits. CVD risk factors were compared cross-sectionally by sex. LVH was defined …

Background: In the United States, more than 80% of health care spending is focused on the management of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Controlling these chronic diseases can lead to better health outcomes and decrease the number of preventable deaths. Patient self-management has shown to improve clinical outcomes. In a primary care setting, a multidisciplinary approach can more effectively educate patients on improving their health. Purpose: To assess the impact of a health coach in a primary care setting as it relates to clinical outcomes. Methods: Patients from two Aurora family medicine clinics were referred to a …

Introduction
Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease, yet the proportion of adults whose hypertension is controlled is low. The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is a model for care delivery that emphasizes patientcentered and team-based care and focuses on quality and safety. Our goal was to investigate changes in hypertension care under PCMH implementation in a large multipayer PCMH demonstration project that may have led to improvements in hypertension control.
Methods
The PCMH transformation initiative conducted 118 semistructured interviews at 17 primary care practices in southeastern Pennsylvania between January 2011 and January 2012. Clinicians (n …
Central Neural Mechanisms Of Salt-Sensitive Hypertension, Robert Larson
Central Neural Mechanisms Of Salt-Sensitive Hypertension, Robert Larson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Hypertension (HTN) is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, and it’s estimated that over 80 million adults in the United States have HTN. Essential HTN often demonstrates sensitivity to salt, and reductions in dietary salt attenuate high blood pressure in this population. Evidence indicates that the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus is a key driver of HTN due to excess salt intake. The cellular mechanisms whereby PVN neuronal activity is augmented in response to salt are largely unknown. Previous work from our lab has demonstrated that small conductance calcium activated potassium (SK) channel function is …
Patient Self-Management: Impact Of Racism-Related Vigilance In The Management Of Hypertension In African-Americans, Rackelle N. Wilkinson-Alston
Patient Self-Management: Impact Of Racism-Related Vigilance In The Management Of Hypertension In African-Americans, Rackelle N. Wilkinson-Alston
Writing Across the Curriculum
It is important to understand the role that discrimination plays in health disparities. This paper will discuss racism-related vigilance, and its role in health outcomes in hypertensive African-Americans (AAs). This paper will also attempt to provide insight on how the absence of a culturally competent health care system may predispose AAs to developing stress-induced hypertension due to racism-related vigilance. This paper will explore how community partnership programs may be beneficial interventions for building resilience and promoting positive health behaviors among hypertensive AAs in the face of discrimination-related vigilance.

The authors present evidence for a novel, new hypothesis whereby magnesium deficiency (MgD) acts as a genotoxic agent which probably causes numerous, hertofore, unrecognized consequences, even over a short-term, on the physiological, molecular and biochemical machinery of cardiovascular tissues and cells. The end result of these genotoxic effects of MgD probably plays important roles in the etiology and generation of diverse cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, inflammation, and strokes via alterations in the epigenome of cardiovascular tissues and cells. The importance of adequate water-borne and dietary levels of Mg is emphasized.
