Factors Influencing The Treatment Outcome Of Intentional Replantation On Teeth With Periapical Periodontitis: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Teng Kai Ong, Daniel Lim, Maharaj Singh, Alissa V. Fial

Library Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives

The purpose of this review was to appraise the quality of evidence of the existing publications on IR, and to perform a meta-analysis on the treatment outcomes of IR.

Methods

The specific PIO questions were as follows: Population: Patients with periapical periodontitis either before or after nonsurgical endodontic therapy. Intervention: IR performed with retrograde preparation and retrograde filling. Outcomes: the healing, treatment complications, and the factors influencing these outcomes after IR. Electronic and hand searches were performed in the Web of Science, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases. Two authors independently screened the titles and abstracts for eligibility. The …

10-Minute Ebd: Does Articaine Compared To Lidocaine Result In A Higher Risk Of Paresthesia?, Ben Balevi Dds, Msc Sep 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Does Articaine Compared To Lidocaine Result In A Higher Risk Of Paresthesia?, Ben Balevi Dds, Msc

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This Evidence-Based Dentistry column examines whether articaine, when compared to lidocaine, increases the risk of paresthesia in adults undergoing dental block anesthesia. After conducting a comprehensive literature search, the evidence suggests that 4% articaine may enhance the probability of achieving profound block anesthesia, with a very low risk of paresthesia, comparable to other dental local anesthetics. Considering this evidence in conjunction with the patient's preferences and values is crucial when making clinical decisions.

10-Minute Ebd: Can A Vacuum-Formed Retainer Replace A Bonded Orthodontic Retainer?, Joshua Dickie Aug 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Can A Vacuum-Formed Retainer Replace A Bonded Orthodontic Retainer?, Joshua Dickie

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Ten-Minute Evidence-Based Dentistry Column illustrates how to implement the evidence-based dentistry search process to quickly identify and apply the best literature to answer a clinical question. Through critical appraisal, the author of this article answers the clinical question of the effectiveness of vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) compared to bonded orthodontic retainers in maintaining tooth positioning and promoting oral hygiene. The study reviews existing literature and highlights the challenges in evaluating the two types of retainers, primarily due to patient compliance with VFRs. While some studies suggest that bonded retainers provide better short-term retention, the choice between retainers depends on various …

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds Mar 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column critically evaluates the outcomes of digital scans versus conventional impressions in fabricating single-unit crowns, focusing on factors such as marginal and internal fit. Employing a PICO question and a literature search pathway via PubMed, the analysis includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Findings suggest that crowns from digital scans generally exhibit clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit, often outperforming conventional impressions. However, heterogeneity in study samples and methodologies contributes to varied results. While digital scans meet the standard of care, ongoing research is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape in digital prosthodontics.

10-Minute Ebd: Is Fluoride Varnish Safe And Effective?, Sara Toema Bds, Dds Feb 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Is Fluoride Varnish Safe And Effective?, Sara Toema Bds, Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column addresses a common clinical scenario where a parent questions the safety and efficacy of fluoride varnish for preventing dental decay in a pediatric patient. Conducting a 10-minute Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD) literature search, the author explores the available evidence, pathways, and resources. The search includes Google, systematic reviews from Cochrane Library and Epistemonikos, and the American Dental Association (ADA) Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry database. The results confirm the safety and efficacy of 2.26% fluoride varnish, preventing 43% of caries in permanent teeth and 37% in primary teeth. The moderate-level evidence supports recommending fluoride varnish application, aligning with …

10-Minute Ebd: Factors Impacting Gingival Margin Position Following Esthetic Crown Lengthening, I-Ting (David) Lee Jan 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Factors Impacting Gingival Margin Position Following Esthetic Crown Lengthening, I-Ting (David) Lee

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The esthetic crown lengthening procedure aims to address gingival concerns and achieve harmonious crown proportions. This article explores factors influencing gingival margin position post-surgical intervention, focusing on patients with excessive gingival display. The PICO question investigates gingival changes six months post-surgery. A comprehensive literature search using keywords such as "esthetic crown lengthening" and "gummy smile" identifies relevant articles. Results indicate varied outcomes, emphasizing the importance of individualized approaches. Notably, factors like flap margin suture placement impact tissue rebound. This study underscores the complexity of esthetic crown lengthening, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to ensure optimal outcomes.
