Health collection

There is increasing evidence that Periodontitis is related to a number of systemic diseases and it may be a risk factor for several chronic inflammatory diseases including cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease , angina and myocardial infarction, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory diseases and diabetes mellitus.

Resistin an adipokine found in adipose tissue and also released by inflammatory cells is associated with the upregulation of inflammatory process. Chronic low grade inflammation is emerging as a conceivable etiologic mechanism linking periodontitis and obesity.

Objectives-

To assess whether obese individuals are at increased risk of severe periodontitis by comparing periodontal clinical parameters (GI, PI, …

Orthodontic Treatment In Periodontal Compromised Patient With Class Ii Posterior Cross Bite And Deep Overbite, Chia-Wei Lin, Ellen Wen-Ching Ko Aug 2022

Orthodontic Treatment In Periodontal Compromised Patient With Class Ii Posterior Cross Bite And Deep Overbite, Chia-Wei Lin, Ellen Wen-Ching Ko

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Orthodontic management in adult patients with advanced periodontitis is complicated and highly technique sensitive because of missing teeth and reduced alveolar attachment. This case report presents a 32-years old female who was referred from periodontal department, complained about maxillary protrusion and anterior spacing. The diagnoses were Class II division 1 malocclusion, combined with bilateral posterior crossbite and deep overbite. After periodontal inflammation was under well controlled, complicated orthodontic teeth movements were achieved with the aid of TADs. The orthodontic treatment includes the retraction of maxillary anterior teeth and intrusion and palatal movement of upper right segment. In the lower arch, the …

Orthodontic Treatment For A Periodontally Compromised Class Ii Malocclusion - A Case Report, Jiun-Hao Lin, Kuan-Yi Wu, I-Ling Hong, Yi-Jane Chen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Adult orthodontic treatment has become increasingly popular. The primary motivating factor for seeking orthodontic treatment in adults is facial and dental esthetics, especially the alignment of their anterior teeth. Pathologic migration of anterior teeth is a common cause of esthetic concern among adult patients. The anchorage control is very important in the orthodontic treatment for the dentition with compromised periodontal support. Mini-implant anchorage provides a good solution to this situation. However, the force level should be light and consistent. Herein we report a 33-year-old female patient who presented a Class II division 1 malocclusion with maxillary anterior crowding, protrusion, and …

10-Minute Ebd: Are Neoplasms A Risk Factor For Peri-Implantitis?, Farah Safieddine Bs, Naama Sleiman Ms, Phd, Melanie E. Mayberry Dds, Ms-Hcm

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column explores the potential association between neoplasms and the risk of peri-implantitis in patients with dental implants. A case study involving a patient with a history of an ossifying fibroma raises questions about the impact of neoplasms on implant success. The literature search, conducted on PubMed, reveals relevant insights. The evidence suggests that ossifying fibromas, particularly with augmentation, may pose a risk for peri-implantitis. However, the direct causative relationship between neoplasms and peri-implant pathology remains unclear. Other risk factors such as periodontitis, foreign bodies, and augmentation procedures are also discussed in the context of implant complications.

Gingival Transcriptome Of Innate Antimicrobial Factors And The Oral Microbiome With Aging And Periodontitis, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Linh Nguyen, Octavio A. Gonzalez Mar 2022

Gingival Transcriptome Of Innate Antimicrobial Factors And The Oral Microbiome With Aging And Periodontitis, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Linh Nguyen, Octavio A. Gonzalez

The epithelial barrier at mucosal sites comprises an important mechanical protective feature of innate immunity, and is intimately involved in communicating signals of infection/tissue damage to inflammatory and immune cells in these local environments. A wide array of antimicrobial factors (AMF) exist at mucosal sites and in secretions that contribute to this innate immunity. A non-human primate model of ligature-induced periodontitis was used to explore characteristics of the antimicrobial factor transcriptome (n = 114 genes) of gingival biopsies in health, initiation and progression of periodontal lesions, and in samples with clinical resolution. Age effects and relationship of AMF to …

The Frequency Of Periodontitis In End-Stage Renal Disease On Hemodialysis In A Sample Of Egyptian Population: Multi-Center Clinical Cross-Sectional Study, Asmaa Ras, Enji A. Ahmed, Radwa Hussein, Eman Khalil Jan 2022

The Frequency Of Periodontitis In End-Stage Renal Disease On Hemodialysis In A Sample Of Egyptian Population: Multi-Center Clinical Cross-Sectional Study, Asmaa Ras, Enji A. Ahmed, Radwa Hussein, Eman Khalil

Dentistry

Abstract Background: There is a general assumption that periodontal disease is highly prevalent among patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis. The aim of the study to estimate the frequency of periodontitis in patients on hemodialysis among a sample of the Egyptian population, as well as the correlation between different clinical parameters of periodontal status with serum creatinine and blood urea. This may rule out the bidirectional relation‑ ship between periodontitis and renal failure in patients on hemodialysis. Methods: The study was conducted on 263 hemodialysis patients (165 males and 98 females) at three dialysis cent‑ ers in Benha Governorate, …

The Effects Of Clinical Depression On The Oral Health Of College Students, Delorias Perkins, Sarah Peng Jan 2022

The Effects Of Clinical Depression On The Oral Health Of College Students, Delorias Perkins, Sarah Peng

Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship

Objectives: Mental health among college students has become a recent concern due to the rising cases of depression. In addition to the stress factors a typical college student often faces, we now have the COVID-19 pandemic that further exacerbates this issue. One’s state of mind has a significant impact on not only their mindset but their body overall. If the body’s health is impacted by depression, then it will influence the immune system and bodily function, ultimately affecting the oral cavity as well. The purpose of this review of literature is to identify the relationship between clinically diagnosed depression and …

The structure and function of epithelial cells are critical for the construction and maintenance of intact epithelial surfaces throughout the body. Beyond the mechanical barrier functions, epithelial cells have been identified as active participants in providing warning signals to the host immune and inflammatory cells and in communicating various detailed information on the noxious challenge to help drive specificity in the characteristics of the host response related to health or pathologic inflammation. Rhesus monkeys were used in these studies to evaluate the gingival transcriptome for naturally occurring disease samples (GeneChip® Rhesus Macaque Genome Array) or for ligature-induced disease (GeneChip® Rhesus …
