LGBTQ+ populations constitute increasing proportions of children, adolescents, and adults in the United States. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, this group suffers from health inequities, including oral health. The report “Oral Health: Advances and Challenges” identified the LGBTQ+ community as an underserved population which faces significant barriers in accessing oral health care. Coverage of LGBTQ+ topics in formal education settings in both dental schools and dental hygiene programs is scarce, which contributes to inequities within this group. Increasing curriculum content related to LGBTQ+ populations is of utmost importance to promote optimal patient-provider interactions while improving oral health outcomes. Ensuring equity …

Penicillin Allergy Assessment And Medical Referral To Promote Antibiotic Stewardship, Elaine Bailey Pharmd, Mackenzie Connell, Marie Fluent Dds, Erinne Kennedy Dds, Mph, Mmsc

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

Antibiotic stewardship is an integral practice for the dental team to ensure a safe dental visit for patients. Now, with clinical practice guidelines and state toolkits, more dentists are aware of and actively practicing antibiotic stewardship. With the application of antibiotic stewardship practices, dentists are identifying the need for additional tools to enhance practice. For example, one need that has been identified is a tool for screening patients for true penicillin allergies. The Penicillin Allergy Assessment Tool (PAAT) is a decision-making tool that can be used chairside to screen patients who report an allergy to penicillin. After screening, dentists can …

Understanding Deep Learning - Challenges And Prospects, Niha Adnan, Fahad Umer

Department of Surgery

The developments in Artificial Intelligence have been on the rise since its advent. The advancements in this field have been the innovative research area across a wide range of industries, making its incorporation in dentistry inevitable. Artificial Intelligence techniques are making serious progress in the diagnostic and treatment planning aspects of dental clinical practice. This will ultimately help in the elimination of subjectivity and human error that are often part of radiographic interpretations, and will improve the overall efficiency of the process. The various types of Artificial Intelligence algorithms that exist today make the understanding of their application quite complex. …

Artificial Intelligence In Dentistry, Orthodontics And Orthognathic Surgery: A Literature Review, Tania Arshad Siddiqui, Rashna Hoshang Sukhia, Dinaz Ghandhi

Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to work like humans. The concept initially began with the advent of mathematical models which gave calculated outputs based on inputs fed into the system. This was later modified with the introduction of various algorithms which can either give output based on overall data analysis or by selection of information within previous data. It is steadily becoming a favoured mode of treatment due to its efficiency and ability to manage complex conditions in all specialities. In dentistry, artificial intelligence has also popularised over the past few decades. They have been found useful for …

The Relationship Between The Educational Experiences Of Senior Dental Students And Their Attitudes Towards Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alya Sarkhouah Jan 2022

The Relationship Between The Educational Experiences Of Senior Dental Students And Their Attitudes Towards Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Alya Sarkhouah

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research explores final year dental students’ knowledge and attitudes towards the treatment and management of patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) as related to variations in the dental practices in Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) training they received. A quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted, employing survey data collection methods, to address descriptive, comparative, and correlational questions. One cohort, Class 2020, attended extramural rotations in specialized clinics for patients with I/DD and in-person lecture concerning this topic. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its health-related restrictions, another cohort, Class 2021, did not have the same opportunity as rotations …

Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi Jan 2022

Constructing A Validity Argument For Assessments Of Clinical Competence In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Retrospective Evaluation, Fatema Alkazemi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate and analyze some sources of validity evidence acquired from data (i.e., scores) of comprehensive clinical competency-focused components of the assessment system within the context of one school of dentistry through retrospective analysis of students’ data. Assessments in dental education need some form of evidence of validity to support the proposed interpretations of scores. The approach for evaluating evidence on test scores is presented as an argument, based on theory and logic, according to the four inferences in Kane’s view on validity: scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication. Based on our available data sets, …
