A Cell Culture Model To Study Tobacco Associated Oral Cancer Progression And Treatment Resistance, Amanda Busch
A Cell Culture Model To Study Tobacco Associated Oral Cancer Progression And Treatment Resistance, Amanda Busch
Theses & Dissertations
Head and Neck Squamous cell carcinoma is the 6th most common cancer in the world. Risk factors for HNSCC include alcohol and tobacco consumption, infection with Human Papilloma Virus, and exposure to environmental toxins. Unlike many other cancers, the incidence of HNSCC is growing, yet the treatment options and outcomes have not been significantly improved for decades. An increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these cancers is needed for improvement in early diagnosis, enhanced treatment effectiveness, and cancer prevention. 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO) is a well-tested, tobacco mimicking, carcinogen. 4NQO produces similar histological and chemical changes found in human …

The State Of Oral Health In People With Disabilities And The Impact Of Family-Centered Care On The Oral Health Of Children With Special Health Care Needs, Bedant Chakraborty
Theses & Dissertations
Oral diseases are one of the most prevalent non-communicable, chronic diseases of the 21st century. Yet, dental diseases are generally neglected and are a top concern for policymakers globally. The burden of oral diseases disrupts routine activities that affect the overall quality of life, especially for those with special healthcare needs. Dental diseases have also been marked as the “silent epidemic” and are the leading secondary health condition that affects individuals with disabilities. Disabled people are less likely to receive timely and adequate dental care, which could be tied to poor oral health outcomes among them. This group of studies …
Secretion Of Salivary Proteins And Their Interactions, Karla Tonelli Bicalho Crosara
Secretion Of Salivary Proteins And Their Interactions, Karla Tonelli Bicalho Crosara
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Saliva’s clinical application for disease diagnosis and monitoring is limited by incomplete knowledge of salivary protein interactions, the effect of stimulation on the salivary proteome, and if these factors impact protein identification. This thesis expands knowledge of the salivary interactome and effects of stimulation intensity and duration on parotid saliva’s proteome. First, previous in vitro studies identified 43 proteins in the histatin 1-protein network and demonstrated histatin 1’s increased stability in whole saliva when interacting with amylase. We hypothesized that protein-protein-interaction databases could enlarge the histatin 1-protein network. A comprehensive histatin 1-protein network was created using STRING database, merging previous …

Activated Charcoal Versus A Chemical Whitening Agent: Effect On Human Enamel, Hien Thai Doan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: For many years, the conventional method to achieve a white smile has been chemical regimens such as peroxide compounds. Previous studies suggest risks associated with chemical procedures, so many are seeking out alternative options such as utilizing activated charcoal. Since this new method is rapidly trending, there have not been many scientific studies on how utilizing activated charcoal can affect the mechanical/physical properties of tooth structure. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the effect of activated charcoal on enamel’s mechanical/physical properties and compare it to a conventional tooth whitening method (carbamide peroxide). Materials and Methods: Extracted …
Force Comparison Of Rotational Tooth Movements For Loop-Design And Traditional Aligners, Robert Olsen
Force Comparison Of Rotational Tooth Movements For Loop-Design And Traditional Aligners, Robert Olsen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction
This study aimed to evaluate the force (F) and torque (Tq) exerted on a rotated canine and molar tooth by two different aligner systems. An ArchForm loop clear aligner (AFL) was compared to a traditional clear aligner (T) with the force (F) and torque (Tq) compared. A reduction in F and Tq with AFL aligners could possibly decrease the incidence of Orthodontic Root Resorption (ORR), while also creating more effective forces for tooth movement.
Materials and Methods
Two types of T aligners varying by material thickness were compared to two types of AFL aligners varying by loop width. All …

Maxillary Central Incisor Rr In Hispanic And Non-Hispanic White Patients With Rme, Madison Healy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Apical root resorption is one of the most common adverse effects of orthodontic treatment. Forces used during orthodontic tooth movement can cause permanent loss of apical surfaces of teeth and although most reported cases of root resorption are asymptomatic, the process is irreversible and often unpredictable. Thus, it is of clinical interest to investigate which patients may be at greatest risk.
Purpose: This study utilized Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to evaluate whether rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in Hispanic patients increased the severity of orthodontically induced apical root resorption.
Materials and Methods: Pre-treatment (T1) and post-treatment …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The oral tissues, including gingiva and buccal mucosa, heal rapidly with minimal scar formation. Although in the oral cavity, the palatal mucosa is associated with excessive scarring in response to injury. In this thesis, first, I investigated the complex relationship between cells and their microenvironment using wound healing models in which extracellular matrix composition and mechanical stiffness affect cellular responses during acute wound repair. I also determined how intrinsic differences of cells recruited during healing contribute to wound resolution.
In Chapter 2, I first investigated cell-extrinsic factors, specifically the influence of the pro-fibrotic matricellular protein periostin on palatal healing. Using …
Evaluation Of Neonatal Ankyloglossia, Ellen M. Ray
Evaluation Of Neonatal Ankyloglossia, Ellen M. Ray
Dissertations
Problem Ankyloglossia occurs when the tongue cannot extend past the gums or lips due to frenulum restriction. In breast feeding, proper movement of the tongue around the nipple is hindered causing difficulty for the infant to obtain a proper latch. This may result in slow weight gain (SWG), failure to thrive (FTT), and dehydration due to poor milk production. Evaluating for ankyloglossia is difficult, however, the Hazelbaker Ankyloglossia Tool for Lingual Frenulum Function (HATLFF) may be of benefit.
Method Observational descriptive design utilizing a retrospective medical record review. The HATLFF was utilized in full term neonates suspected of ankyloglossia in …

Titanium Particles Within Mucosa During Non-Surgical Implant Debridement, Holvin Louie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Titanium implants affected by peri-implantitis lesions are often treated non-surgically with various instruments, which may produce titanium particles that can become lodged within the peri-implant mucosa. Thus, a foreign body reaction may ensue. The aim is to assess the embedment of titanium particles into soft tissues from titanium implants via a stainless-steel ultrasonic scaler (SSU) versus a titanium hand scaler (TH). Sand-blasted, large grit, acid-etched surface-treated titanium implants were implanted into pig legs after creating peri-implantitis defects. Each implant was subjected to only one instrument type. Sequential strokes were conducted followed by thorough irrigation with sterile water. Soft tissue curettage …

An Exploratory Look Into The Effects Of Mississippi's Population Decline On Rural Dental Care, Allen Bailey Saffold
Honors Theses
Literature reviews and interviews with dentists working in rural Mississippi counties examined the effects of population decline on rural dental care in Mississippi. With the state’s continual population decline, loss of industry follows a loss of people. Through a cascade of effects, this can further reduce underserved areas’ access to dental care. In order to address the issue of rural Mississippi continuing to be underserved, policies need to be implemented that will make rural practice at least enticing if not desirable.

Specifically, in the Northeast Tennessee region, these dental services are severely limited. Washington County and Hawkins County of Northeast Tennessee are specific underserved areas in the Appalachian region. The purpose of this project was to explore the …
Quantification Of Dental Fissures Through Occlusal Topography Analysis, Duru Erkan
Quantification Of Dental Fissures Through Occlusal Topography Analysis, Duru Erkan
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Narrow, deep, and elaborate dental fissures are widely believed to increase the predisposition of enamel to develop carious lesions as these surfaces are thought to be ideal for cariogenic bacteria to adhere to. Therefore, dentists prescribe sealants as a preventative measure for patients with such fissures to avoid tooth decay. Yet to date, there is no objective data supporting the notion that fissure morphology actually affects caries susceptibility, nor is there a quantifiable, clinically practical method to characterize fissure patterns expected to increase risk of caries disease.
In this study, three new methods to quantitatively characterize fissure pattern in mandibular …

Poor oral health is a predictor of cognitive decline in elderly populations and has been shown to precede dementia. As cognitive decline progresses, patients are likely to move from the community into nursing facilities. We hypothesize that severity of dementia and residency type will impact the oral health of patients with dementia. Fifty-two participants of two dementia levels were recruited from the UTHealth Neurocognitive Disorders Center and two Houston-area nursing homes. A standardized oral health assessment, plaque index, and oral bacteria analysis determined participants’ oral health status. Further, data was collected on participants’ medical history, oral hygiene habits, dietary habits, …
Comparative Expression Of Exosome-Derived Dental Pulp Stem Cell (Dpsc) Microrna, Matthew Hunsaker
Comparative Expression Of Exosome-Derived Dental Pulp Stem Cell (Dpsc) Microrna, Matthew Hunsaker
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Introduction: Dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) are pluripotent stem cells capable of differentiating into several tissue types. Several studies have demonstrated DPSC can be extracted from deciduous and permanent teeth, including third molars (wisdom teeth) - however, much less is known regarding the factors that determine and regulate pluripotency and differentiation responsiveness among these harvested DPSC. Recent evidence has suggested small, non-coding microRNAs mediate (in part) differentiation and self-renewal among some stromal and hematopoetic stem cells, although much remains to be discovered regarding microRNA regulation of DPSC phenotypes. Based upon this information, the overall goal of this study was to …

Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans Exploits And Modulates The Immune Response By Human Neutrophils For Survival In The Anaerobic Environment., Hazel Ozuna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) is a Gram-negative facultative anaerobe and an opportunistic oral pathogen, strongly associated with localized periodontitis and other inflammatory diseases. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontium resulting from the inflammatory response of the host towards the dysbiotic microbial community present at the gingival crevice. The host immune response creates a hostile environment for microorganisms; therefore, it is important for Aa to be able to regulate the necessary genes to survive and thrive in such an environment. Aaexpresses several virulence factors such as a cytolethal distending toxin (Cdt), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and leukotoxin A (LtxA), …
Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger
Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oral health is strongly correlated to systemic health in the United States. Dental professionals play a significant role in addressing the oral health and prevention of disease for populations in the United States. Because many areas in the United States lack access to dental care, the federal government considers dental hygienists part of the solution. It is now paying attention to restrictive dental hygiene scope of practice rules in each state. State dental boards, comprised mainly of dentists, make these rules based on their perception of dental hygienists' lack of education. This study explored fourth-year dental students' perceptions of the …

Development Of A Non-Invasive Dna Extraction Method From Teeth, Monalisa Heng
Development Of A Non-Invasive Dna Extraction Method From Teeth, Monalisa Heng
Honors Theses
Forensic dentistry has evolved from simple morphological investigations to genetic and molecular analysis. One of the most important techniques is DNA analysis which requires viable samples from an individual or crime site. The orofacial region can be a good source for DNA samples because the tissues can resist environmental, thermal, electrical, and mechanical challenges. Teeth are especially useful as a source of genetic material because the DNA located in the pulp is surrounded by protective mineral tissue. The DNA in the pulp tissue is currently accessed through destructive methods involving crushing, pulverization, and splitting the tooth. Unfortunately, destructive methods destroy …
