Many physical changes occur as one ages, including changes associated with the oral cavity. A review of the literature suggests that the provision of dental care to institutionalized elderly patients presents problems due to a variety of factors. The purpose of this study is to assess the level or dental care provided to residents of long-term care facilities located in Warren County, Kentucky. In addition, secondary objectives Include the ascertainment of who provides dental care to residents and the amount or in-service dental training made available to staff members of the facility.

Dental practitioners treating children are often faced with the question of when to initiate orthodontic treatment. Preventive and interceptive orthodontics encourage treatment of young patients to guide developing malocclusions into functional and aesthetic harmony. Success in early orthodontic treatment depends on accurate diagnosis. Dimensional growth of the arches anterior to the first permanent molar is essentially complete by the age of eight, years of age. 24 Therefore, two important factors in dentition alignment may be the arch length anterior to the first permanent molars and the mesiodistal crown diameter (MDCD) of the permanent teeth in the arch.

Although the importance of dentist-patient communication is generally recognized, the dental literature does not specify what interpersonal behaviors can be used as a basis for evaluating dental students' communication skills. A set of behaviors based on clinical observations is described, and an evaluation of 25 senior students' behavioral skills is presented. Students often did not: (1) spend much time orienting patients before beginning treatment; (2) update medical histories; (3) ask patients if they had any questions before beginning treatment; (4) explain the operation and use of equipment; (5) forewarn patients about uncomfortable procedures; (6) attend to signs of patient discomfort; …
