Serum Nutrient Levels And Aging Effects On Periodontitis, Jeffrey L Ebersole, Joshua Lambert, Heather Bush, Pinar Emecen Huja, Arpita Basu

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Periodontal disease damages tissues as a result of dysregulated host responses against the chronic bacterial biofilm insult and approximately 50% of US adults > 30 years old exhibit periodontitis. The association of five blood nutrients and periodontitis were evaluated due to our previous findings regarding a potential protective effect for these nutrients in periodontal disease derived from the US population sampled as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2004). Data from over 15,000 subjects was analyzed for blood levels of cis-β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, folate, vitamin D, and vitamin E, linked with analysis of the presence and severity of periodontitis. …

Odontogenic Abscesses In Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta) Of Cayo Santiago, Hong Li, Wenjing Luo, Anna Feng, Michelle L. Tang, Terry B. Kensler, Elizabeth Maldonado, Octavio A. Gonzalez, Matthew J. Kessler, Paul C. Dechow, Jeffrey L. Ebersole, Qian Wang Nov 2018

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Objectives
Odontogenic abscesses are one of the most common dental diseases causing maxillofacial skeletal lesions. They affect the individual's ability to maintain the dental structures necessary to obtain adequate nutrition for survival and reproduction. In this study, the prevalence and pattern of odontogenic abscesses in relation to age, sex, matriline, and living periods were investigated in adult rhesus macaque skeletons of the free-ranging colony on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico.

Materials and Methods
The skulls used for this study were from the skeletons of 752 adult rhesus macaques, aged 8–31 years, and born between 1951 and 2000. They came from 66 …

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors Prevent Persistent Hypersensitivity In An Orofacial Neuropathic Pain Model, Robert J. Danaher, Liping Zhang, Connor J. Donley, Nashwin A. Laungani, S. Elise Hui, Craig S. Miller, Karin N. Westlund Sep 2018

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors Prevent Persistent Hypersensitivity In An Orofacial Neuropathic Pain Model, Robert J. Danaher, Liping Zhang, Connor J. Donley, Nashwin A. Laungani, S. Elise Hui, Craig S. Miller, Karin N. Westlund

Chronic orofacial pain is a significant health problem requiring identification of regulating processes. Involvement of epigenetic modifications that is reported for hindlimb neuropathic pain experimental models, however, is less well studied in cranial nerve pain models. Three independent observations reported here are the (1) epigenetic profile in mouse trigeminal ganglia (TG) after trigeminal inflammatory compression (TIC) nerve injury mouse model determined by gene expression microarray, (2) H3K9 acetylation pattern in TG by immunohistochemistry, and (3) efficacy of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors to attenuate development of hypersensitivity. After TIC injury, ipsilateral whisker pad mechanical sensitization develops by day 3 and persists …

Dental Students' Skills Assessments: Comparisons Of Daily Clinical Grades And Clinical And Laboratory Assessments, Elizangela Bertoli, Kristy Pepper Lawson, Susan S. Bishop Apr 2018

Dental Students' Skills Assessments: Comparisons Of Daily Clinical Grades And Clinical And Laboratory Assessments, Elizangela Bertoli, Kristy Pepper Lawson, Susan S. Bishop

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

The aim of this study was to compare the daily clinical grades of third-year dental students during routine clinical activities involving direct and indirect operative procedures to clinical and laboratory assessments. The authors compared students’ daily clinical grades to graded clinical assessments and compared daily clinical grades to laboratory assessments at one U.S. dental school. A total of 50 third-year students (participation rate: 98%) participated in this study during the school year of 2014–15. The study analyzed the students’ daily clinical grades and graded assessments during regular clinical activities and two laboratory examinations. The results found no statistically significant differences …

Calcification Of The Stylohyoid Complex In Libyans, Galal Omami Apr 2018

Calcification Of The Stylohyoid Complex In Libyans, Galal Omami

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and pattern of calcification of the stylohyoid complex in Libyan population.

Material and methods: Archived digital panoramic radiographs of 3343 patients were collected; 181 images were excluded for underage or poor image quality. Thus, the images of 3162 patients (1081 men, 2081 women; women-to-men ratio, 2:1; age range, 16–68 years; mean age, 36.7 years) retrieved and assigned to one of four morphological patterns of the stylohyoid complex: regular, elongated, calcified, and undetected. Data were analyzed with the Χ2 test using SPSS (Chicago, IL, USA); P values lower than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results: …

Comparative Analysis Of Microbial Sensing Molecules In Mucosal Tissues With Aging, Octavio A. Gonzalez, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Michael John Novak, A. J. Stromberg, L. Orraca, J. Gonzalez-Martinez, A. Burgos, Jeffrey L. Ebersole Mar 2018

Comparative Analysis Of Microbial Sensing Molecules In Mucosal Tissues With Aging, Octavio A. Gonzalez, Sreenatha S. Kirakodu, Michael John Novak, A. J. Stromberg, L. Orraca, J. Gonzalez-Martinez, A. Burgos, Jeffrey L. Ebersole

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

Host-bacterial interactions at mucosal surfaces require recognition of the bacteria by host cells enabling targeted responses to maintain tissue homeostasis. It is now well recognized that an array of host-derived pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), both cell-bound and soluble, are critical to innate immune engagement of microbes via microbial-associated molecular patterns (MAMP). This report describes the use of a nonhuman primate model to evaluate changes in the expression of these sensing molecules related to aging in healthy gingival tissues. Macaca mulatta aged 3-24 years were evaluated clinically and gingival tissues obtained, RNA isolated and microarray analysis conducted for gene expression of …

Multiple Unerupted And Supernumerary Teeth In A Patient With Cleidocranial Dysplasia, Galal Omami Feb 2018

Multiple Unerupted And Supernumerary Teeth In A Patient With Cleidocranial Dysplasia, Galal Omami

Oral Health Practice Faculty Publications

Cleidocranial dysplasia is an extremely rare familial disorder characterized by partial or complete absence of clavicles, characteristic craniofacial deformities, and the presence of numerous supernumerary and unerupted teeth. Here, the author reviews the striking radiographic findings of cleidocranial dysplasia in a 16-year-old adolescent boy who presented with delayed teeth eruption.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the soft tissue thickness and marginal bone loss around dental implants with sloped micro-threaded shoulder (30° angle) in comparing with conventional design, inserted 30° degrees angulated in post extraction sockets and immediate loaded with temporary prosthesis simulating the all-on-four protocol. Materials and Methods: Six fox hound dogs received forty-eight post extraction dental implants with the different diameter and length (Medentika, Germany), but with different neck configurations. Two group of implants were inserted 1mm subcrestal. Control group has a micro-threaded neck and the Test group has a sloped microthreaded neck. Immediate loading …
