Recently, studies have explored how biologically active compounds in wine benefit human teeth. Dietary polyphenols, in particular wine polyphenols, seem to balance the composition of the oral microbiota, thus leading to potentially more effective anti-carious effects on the individual. Recent research has discussed the main action mechanisms of polyphenols against oral microbial diseases and highlighted the antiadhesive capacity of caffeic and p-coumaric acids as well as grape seed and red wine extracts. It has been found that polyphenols increased their inhibition potential against S. mutans adhesion when combined with S. dentisani.¹ Other research regarding polyphenols, specifically resveratrol, discussed the anti-inflammatory …

The three types of powders have different pros and cons related to their function; though most studies show significant advantages of using air polishing in general. This research poster addresses the question, “What treatment modalities are most effective at treating peri-implantitis (PI)?” Dental implants are one of the most innovative ways to support dental prosthetics. They can support heavy physical loads. However, infection causes inflammation and bone loss around implants. Studies indicate that there are many factors that can increase the risk for PI. These factors include: Smoking; pre-existing periodontal disease; oral hygiene, quality of prosthetic reconstruction; some systemic conditions and medications.

Ketogenic ‘keto’ diet emphasizes high fat, low carbohydrate consumption and avoids simple carbohydrate and sugars. Sugar substitutes are almost always utilized. Fat heavy diets causes the body to go into ketosis: a process in which the body burns fat for energy because glucose isn’t available. This research poster addresses the question “What differences are seen between formula and breastfed babies in the development of the oral microbiome?” The bacteria that make up the oral microbiome begins accumulating from birth through interactions with the environment and caregivers. When it comes to the oral cavity, bacteria such a Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli, can be transferred through saliva or feeding. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a well-recognized disease entity affecting approximately 2% to 4% of the population. Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery is a highly successful surgical alternative to poorly tolerated CPAP therapy and achieves a success rate of 89% in the current literature. Our present study evaluates the effectiveness of MMA surgery in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe OSA based on Shers criteria of 50% reduction in AHI and AHI < 20. Radiographic and clinical treatment variables were evaluated in determining predictors of success for MMA in individuals with OSA.

Dental caries is a common illness in adults and is caused by the demineralization and decay of tooth structure. There are different factors that can contribute to dental caries, such as poor oral hygiene, an abundance of cariogenic bacteria, frequent consumption of sugary or acidic foods and drinks, and a maintenance of low pH in the oral cavity. While the best prevention of dental caries is brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, there are other options for patients that may be helpful, such as products containing a sugar alcohol called Xylitol. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common developmental neurological disorder affecting about 2-3 children out of 1,000. CP is the result of infant brain damage or abnormal development resulting in impaired muscle control, coordination, tone, reflex, posture, and balance. These patients are unable to control motor movements of their muscles of mastication and facial expression, causing excessive drooling, clenching, bruxism, and other oral health-related issues. This lack of motor control affects their ability to swallow and often limits these patients to a liquid diet. This can lead to vitamin deficiencies and result in further developmental problems. Objective: To provide an analysis of the association between the longevity of breastfeeding and development of ECC. Determine the optimal time frame in which mothers should cease breastfeeding to reduce ECC development. Methods: Dr. Brickhouse, PubMed, Google Scholar and other scholarly databases were utilized to find current scientific evidence on the effects of breast milk on ECC. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, or SLE, is a chronic autoimmune disease which significantly affects various organs of the body and the oral cavity. According to various studies, SLE can cause an increased risk of periodontitis, fungal infections, and dental caries within the oral cavity. Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition mediated by an infectious etiology which affects the supporting tissues of the periodontium and alveolar bone. The aim of this study was to determine the change in working length (∆WL) before and after coronal flaring and after complete rotary instrumentation as a function of canal curvature. One mesiobuccal or mesiolingual canal from each of 43 extracted molars had coronal standardization and access performed. Once the access was completed, canal preparation was accomplished using Gates Glidden drills for coronal flaring and EndoSequence files for rotary instrumentation. WLs were obtained at 3 time points: pre-instrumentation (unflared), mid-instrumentation (flared) and post-instrumentation (concluded).
