Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: To investigate the effect of various surface treatments and different application times on shear bond strength between polyetheretherketone and composite resin. Methods: A total of 110 disc-shaped polyetheretherketone specimens were randomly divided into 9 groups and 4 different surface treatments (control, sandblasting, tribochemical silica coating, sulfuric acid) were applied. The sandblasting, tribochemical silica coating, and sulfuric acid processes were performed 3 different times (10s, 15s, 20s). Then, the composite resins were applied to the treated surfaces of the polyetheretherketone specimens. The shear bond strength test and scanning electron microscopy analysis were performed. The data were statistically analyzed using …

Benign or malignant tumor is one of the frequent causes of resection of the mandible. The extent and location of the tumor decides the mode of treatment of the neoplastic lesion. Surgical removal of oral neoplasm leads to an extensive resection of the mandible along with the associated structures. Objective: This case report describes the use of palatal ramp prosthesis to guide the mandible during movements and restore a stable occlusal relationship with an additional acrylic buccal pad to achieve partial esthetics. Case Report: A 30-years-old female patient reported with the inability to chew food following the mandibular resection of …

Oral Health Of Completely Edentulous Patients During The Covid-19 Pandemic And Its Impact On Their Nutritional Status: A Pilot Study, Hayat Jaber, Elissa Haddad, Carole Abi Ghosn Yared, Jihad Fakhouri, Nada El Osta

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the WHO on May 2020, has forced governments around the world to adapt several restrictive measures causing difficulties of access to oral healthcare. In Lebanon, a lack of data on these difficulties and their consequences for completely edentulous people prompted the realization of a pilot study evaluating the impact of this pandemic on access to oral healthcare and on the oral health status, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and nutritional status of these individuals. The study was conducted at the Removable Prosthodontics Department of the Faculty of Dentistry at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut through …

Prosthetic Management Of Interruptive Mandibular Defects, Saloua Hamzaoui, Mohamed Azhari, Hasnaa Rokhssi, Majid Sakout, Oussama Bentahar

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Mandibular substance loss is one of the most frequent acquired defects of the maxillofacial mass. Several etiologies have been described, the most frequent of which are tumours and traumas. The most commonly used prosthetic classification takes into consideration the bone continuity of the mandible, thus there are marginal defect mandibular substance preserving bone continuity and segmental defect with basal bone discontinuity. These bone defects lead to numerous functional complications (loss the dental occlusion, decreased chewing efficiency, lack of stalling during swallowing, phonatory disorder related to the change in the buccal resonance cavity) and aesthetic complications (facial asymmetry due to lateral …

An Overview Of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation For The General Dentist, Vladimir Frias Dds, Ms

The New York State Dental Journal

The rehabilitation of the maxillofacial patient is mostly carried out in a multi-specialty treatment environment such as a comprehensive cancer center, where multiple specialists are available to treat the numerous concerns and complications that may occur. Many of these patients are seen by the maxillofacial prosthodontist at the same time as the other members of the team and maxillofacial rehabilitation can be treatment planned and performed expediently. Some patients, however, are treated without rehabilitation in mind and go years without appropriate referrals. A knowledge of the multiple types of prostheses available will allow the general practitioner to decide if a …

10-Minute Ebd: Are Neoplasms A Risk Factor For Peri-Implantitis?, Farah Safieddine Bs, Naama Sleiman Ms, Phd, Melanie E. Mayberry Dds, Ms-Hcm

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column explores the potential association between neoplasms and the risk of peri-implantitis in patients with dental implants. A case study involving a patient with a history of an ossifying fibroma raises questions about the impact of neoplasms on implant success. The literature search, conducted on PubMed, reveals relevant insights. The evidence suggests that ossifying fibromas, particularly with augmentation, may pose a risk for peri-implantitis. However, the direct causative relationship between neoplasms and peri-implant pathology remains unclear. Other risk factors such as periodontitis, foreign bodies, and augmentation procedures are also discussed in the context of implant complications.

Introduction: Finding a suitable material that could be used to restore relatively small inter-arch spaces in which reasonable aesthetics as well as good functional strength could be achieved is a difficult process that requires good understanding of the clinical situation and precise management. Historically Metal used to offer the smallest possible thickness with excellent strength but lacks resiliency with poor aesthetics.

Aim of the study: This In-vitro study was conducted to compare two different aesthetic materials PEEK and ACETAL regarding their mechanical strength when used as Overdenture framework in a relatively small thickness.

Material and Methods: 120 specimens were …

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds Mar 2022

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column critically evaluates the outcomes of digital scans versus conventional impressions in fabricating single-unit crowns, focusing on factors such as marginal and internal fit. Employing a PICO question and a literature search pathway via PubMed, the analysis includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Findings suggest that crowns from digital scans generally exhibit clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit, often outperforming conventional impressions. However, heterogeneity in study samples and methodologies contributes to varied results. While digital scans meet the standard of care, ongoing research is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape in digital prosthodontics.
