The Back Page Commentary: Let’S Talk About The Real World, Danielle Gehlert Dds
The Back Page Commentary: Let’S Talk About The Real World, Danielle Gehlert Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Dr. Danielle Gehlert, a private practitioner, writes that in the realm of continuing education for dental professionals, there's a need for a shift in focus from idealized, "sexy" cases to real-world patient scenarios. This commentary calls for seminars and programs emphasizing long-term restorative planning, including successes and failures. The practical considerations of patient financial limitations and willingness to engage in dental care must be integral to treatment plans. Real-world cases should reflect the diverse situations dental practitioners encounter and the ethical responsibility to provide affordable and effective treatment options.

An Overview Of Maxillofacial Rehabilitation For The General Dentist, Vladimir Frias Dds, Ms
The New York State Dental Journal
The rehabilitation of the maxillofacial patient is mostly carried out in a multi-specialty treatment environment such as a comprehensive cancer center, where multiple specialists are available to treat the numerous concerns and complications that may occur. Many of these patients are seen by the maxillofacial prosthodontist at the same time as the other members of the team and maxillofacial rehabilitation can be treatment planned and performed expediently. Some patients, however, are treated without rehabilitation in mind and go years without appropriate referrals. A knowledge of the multiple types of prostheses available will allow the general practitioner to decide if a …

10-Minute Ebd: Are Neoplasms A Risk Factor For Peri-Implantitis?, Farah Safieddine Bs, Naama Sleiman Ms, Phd, Melanie E. Mayberry Dds, Ms-Hcm
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This 10-Minute EBD column explores the potential association between neoplasms and the risk of peri-implantitis in patients with dental implants. A case study involving a patient with a history of an ossifying fibroma raises questions about the impact of neoplasms on implant success. The literature search, conducted on PubMed, reveals relevant insights. The evidence suggests that ossifying fibromas, particularly with augmentation, may pose a risk for peri-implantitis. However, the direct causative relationship between neoplasms and peri-implant pathology remains unclear. Other risk factors such as periodontitis, foreign bodies, and augmentation procedures are also discussed in the context of implant complications.

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds
10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This 10-Minute EBD column critically evaluates the outcomes of digital scans versus conventional impressions in fabricating single-unit crowns, focusing on factors such as marginal and internal fit. Employing a PICO question and a literature search pathway via PubMed, the analysis includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Findings suggest that crowns from digital scans generally exhibit clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit, often outperforming conventional impressions. However, heterogeneity in study samples and methodologies contributes to varied results. While digital scans meet the standard of care, ongoing research is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape in digital prosthodontics.

10-Minute Ebd: Factors Impacting Gingival Margin Position Following Esthetic Crown Lengthening, I-Ting (David) Lee
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The esthetic crown lengthening procedure aims to address gingival concerns and achieve harmonious crown proportions. This article explores factors influencing gingival margin position post-surgical intervention, focusing on patients with excessive gingival display. The PICO question investigates gingival changes six months post-surgery. A comprehensive literature search using keywords such as "esthetic crown lengthening" and "gummy smile" identifies relevant articles. Results indicate varied outcomes, emphasizing the importance of individualized approaches. Notably, factors like flap margin suture placement impact tissue rebound. This study underscores the complexity of esthetic crown lengthening, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to ensure optimal outcomes.
