H.U.B. City Steps is a 5-year community-based participatory research walking intervention designed to help lower blood pressure in a majority African American population in southern Mississippi via community collaboration and capacity building, increased walking, culturally tailored health education sessions, and motivational interviewing. Building community capacity for physical activity is a key component of this intervention. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been used to assess how project stakeholders perceive the community capacity-building efforts of the project. This article illustrates the baseline results of this mixed methods approach from the perspective of three groups of stakeholders: project researchers and staff, community advisory …

Whole-Body Vibration Improves Functional Mobility, Flexibility, And Relative Risk For Falling In The Assisted Living Elderly: A Case Series, Christina Garrity, Harold Merriman, C. Brahler

Study design: A randomized double blind repeated measures, case series study of whole body vibration (WBV) in the assisted living elderly.
Background: A single exposure to WBV has been shown to have benefit with respect to muscle activity, strength, balance, and power in some studies while other studies have found no benefit. Its overall effectiveness is unknown due to the conflicting findings reported in the literature.
Case description: Six subjects (5 female, 1 male; mean age = 85.4) in an assisted living community volunteered to participate. Subjects were exposed to a single bout of WBV at 0, 2, 20, and …

Surgical And Topographic Anatomy Of The Maxillary Line: An Important Landmark For Endoscopic Nasal Surgery, Athanasios Raikos, Pasan Waidyasekara, Amy Morrison
Athanasios Raikos
The maxillary line is an important surgical landmark in the lateral nasal cavity. We investigated its location, variation, and relation to other landmarks in 47 formalin fixed cadaveric half-heads dissected in steps. Measurements and observations were made to describe the topography of the maxillary line, maxillary line midpoint (M-point), and their relationship with surgically important structures. The mean curved length of the maxillary line was 15 mm (SD 3.5) and can be classified into three types. The Mpoint had a mean vertical distance of 0.8 mm (SD 2.9) below the nasolacrimal sac–duct junction. It was found below, above, or on …

We have developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for imaging Feridex (superparamagnetic iron oxide [SPIO])-labeled islets of Langerhans using a standard clinical 1.5-Tesla (T) scanner and employing steady-state acquisition imaging sequence (3DFIESTA). Both porcine and rat islets were labeled with SPIO by a transfection technique using a combination of poly-l-lysine and electroporation. Electron microscopy demonstrated presence of SPIO particles within the individual islet cells, including beta-cells and particles trapped between cell membranes. Our labeling method produced a transfection rate of 860 pg to 3.4 ng iron per islet, dependent on the size of the islet. The labeling procedure did …

We investigated the developmental expression and cellular resolution of connexin32 and 43 mRNA in the rat brain using in situ hybridization. Utilizing 35S-labelled probes, in situ hybridization was performed on sections of embryonic day 20 and postnatal days 3, 10, 15, 30 and adult brain. Connexin32 mRNA was first detected in brainstem nuclei at postnatal day 3 and in the midbrain at postnatal day 15. The level of this message continued to increase to postnatal day 30 where the level of message reached a plateau or slightly decreased by adulthood. The distribution of signal included the medial vestibular nucleus, dorsal …
