Motivations Behind The Rise And Success Of Homeopathy In India, Kavya Patchipulusu
Motivations Behind The Rise And Success Of Homeopathy In India, Kavya Patchipulusu
Senior Theses
Homeopathy is a form of medicine that is incredibly controversial and is often labeled as a fraudulent, placebo effect drug, that can have potentially dangerous side effects. This is the picture that is painted of homeopathy in the United States and many other countries in which these medicines are banned in distribution or highly unregulated. In contrast, India has popularized and well-integrated homeopathy into their medical systems with government backing and consistent funding towards accredited homeopathic institutions and funding hospital systems. This paper will explore the circumstances and health care dynamics of India that allowed homeopathy to gain the level …
A Comparison Of Health Outcomes In Bare-Metal Stenting Versus Drug-Eluting Stenting, Ryan Hill
A Comparison Of Health Outcomes In Bare-Metal Stenting Versus Drug-Eluting Stenting, Ryan Hill
Senior Theses
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is an epidemic in the United States and around the world, with millions falling victim to CAD and other forms of heart disease annually. There are both many causes and many treatments to these aforementioned heart diseases. Some of these causes and comorbidities include the usual suspects: obesity, diabetes and smoking. However, the component I am more interested in is the multitude of different procedures and technologies that can serve to treat cases of CAD.
The inspiration for choosing the topic of CAD treatment for my senior thesis derives from my interest in the field of …
Decoding Implant-Related Sickness: Unraveling The Complexities Of Breast Implant Illness, Madison M. Stewart
Decoding Implant-Related Sickness: Unraveling The Complexities Of Breast Implant Illness, Madison M. Stewart
Senior Theses
This thesis investigates the phenomenon of breast implant illness (BII), examining its potential correlation with individual factors such as obesity and poor lifestyle habits. BII, characterized by nonspecific symptoms, is often self-diagnosed by patients influenced by social media and internet sources, leading to requests for implant removal. Conducting a comprehensive meta-analysis, the study scrutinizes existing literature to evaluate the association between BII, obesity, and lifestyle choices. Employing inclusion criteria, peer-reviewed publications are analyzed through systematic review methodology to offer insights into the interplay between BII and adiposity, exploring inflammatory mechanisms and patient behaviors like exercise and smoking. The research aims …
Accuracy Of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring In Vancomycin And The Pharmacist Role: A Retrospective Case-Series, Kateryna Parkhomenko
Accuracy Of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring In Vancomycin And The Pharmacist Role: A Retrospective Case-Series, Kateryna Parkhomenko
Senior Theses
Vancomycin is a mainstay of therapy for treating virulent and resistant infections, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, vancomycin requires therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for optimal dosing and treatment. This requires pharmacists to calculate a dosing regimen that correlates to appropriate goal vancomycin concentrations in the blood. Dosing vancomycin can be difficult, as it varies on a patient’s weight, renal function, age, etc. Doses may have to be adjusted in response to out-of-range concentrations, which requires further pharmacy calculations. Inaccurate dosing poses a risk to patient safety and places a resource and time burden on pharmacists. If vancomycin dosing methods …
Moral Injury To Inform Analysis Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Amanda Julia Manea
Moral Injury To Inform Analysis Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Amanda Julia Manea
Senior Theses
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that almost one out of ten veterans struggle with. Although the National Center for PTSD has made extensive progress in characterizing and developing new treatments for PTSD, most veterans still experience symptoms of PTSD following treatment. Novel avenues of investigation, such as developing algorithms to review electronic health record (EHR) data and better understanding moral injury, are being pursued to address the gap that still exists when it comes to treating veterans. Moral injury is the individual evaluation of exposure to a potentially morally injurious event (PMIE) and can lead to …
The Usefulness Of The Left Atrial Dilation Rate In Determining Severity Of Heart Failure, Laura B. Snyder
The Usefulness Of The Left Atrial Dilation Rate In Determining Severity Of Heart Failure, Laura B. Snyder
Senior Theses
Hypertension and vascular stiffness are two physiological conditions that strain the left ventricle (LV) and cause it to gain muscle mass. Eventually, the LV is unable to fill correctly and the patient develops Heart Failure with a preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF). Clinically, a patient’s left atrium (LA) area is measured as a diagnostic parameter of HFpEF severity. However, this doesn’t offer a prognosis or threshold of LA size necessitating hospitalization because of variation in patient demographics, genetics, and lifestyle which affect rates of HFpEF progression.
Since there are no medications or effective treatment options for HFpEF patients, there is a …
Athos Wearable Technology: A Comparison Study, Sara Desmarais, Madeleine Giess
Athos Wearable Technology: A Comparison Study, Sara Desmarais, Madeleine Giess
Senior Theses
Technological advances permit the assessment of new variables, and over time miniaturize and make portable equipment that once was restricted research or clinical settings. Validation of the new equipment is essential before it can be used. This study compared Athos Wearable Technology to a standard form of electromyography (EMG). We hypothesized that Athos would produce a similar percent of MVIC data when compared to a standard EMG during a series of movements. Participants performed five movements, once while wearing the Athos pants, and once while wearing Noraxon Wireless EMG Electrodes on their vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris. The …
Adhd And Social Impairment Among Children: Problem Solving Skills As A Potential Mediator, Rebecca Mccord
Adhd And Social Impairment Among Children: Problem Solving Skills As A Potential Mediator, Rebecca Mccord
Senior Theses
This study tested the hypothesis that problem solving skills mediate the relation between ADHD symptoms and social impairment in children. Problem solving skills were evaluated by the Test of Problem Solving 3 – Elementary Version (TOPS), which separated problem solving skills into six different subtypes: making inferences, sequencing, negative questions, problem solving, predicting, and determining causes. ADHD symptoms were assessed through the parent report of the Disruptive Behavior Disorder Scale (DBD). Social impairment was assessed through the parent report of social skills using the Social Skills Improvement System (SSIS). Three hundred seventy-two (372) children between the ages of eight and …
