Retrieval Analysis Of Necropsy Total Hip Replacements: Considerations Beyond The Implant, Julie Alyse Lowell
Retrieval Analysis Of Necropsy Total Hip Replacements: Considerations Beyond The Implant, Julie Alyse Lowell
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction. Total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful orthopedic procedures in the United States. More than 300,000 primary THAs and 40,000 revision THAs performed in the United States every year. While the need for revision surgeries can stem from a variety of causes, there have been, to the author’s knowledge, no studies attempting to correlate the concentrations of certain inflammatory cytokines to metal ion concentrations found in the tissue surrounding the implant, amount of polyethylene wear, or strength of the interface of the modular taper. The purpose of this study was to begin …

Effects Of Revision Surgery On Grade Of Adverse Local Tissue Reaction Following Recall Of A Modular Hip Implant, Joseph F. Davies, Danielle M. Greer, Susan Truchan
Effects Of Revision Surgery On Grade Of Adverse Local Tissue Reaction Following Recall Of A Modular Hip Implant, Joseph F. Davies, Danielle M. Greer, Susan Truchan
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Background: The Stryker Rejuvenate modular hip implant device allows for greater versatility in matching a patient’s anatomy than conventional implants. Device recalls and in vivo metal hypersensitivity after total hip arthroplasty (THA) are common. However, recall of the Rejuvenate implant represents one of the largest recall volumes to date, highlighting our uncertainty regarding causes of device metal fretting/corrosion and adverse local tissue reaction (ALTR). While devices with metal-on-metal bearings historically were culprits for release of metal debris, more recently developed modular-neck devices add opportunity for adjacent metal components to rub together. With the Rejuvenate device, corrosion or fretting likely occurs …
Perceived Stress Levels May Impact Upper Extremity Function Among Women Treated For Breast Cancer, Mary Insana Fisher, Anne Fleischer, Lynn Hendricks, Megan Mcclure, Kim Parent, Renee Roberts
Perceived Stress Levels May Impact Upper Extremity Function Among Women Treated For Breast Cancer, Mary Insana Fisher, Anne Fleischer, Lynn Hendricks, Megan Mcclure, Kim Parent, Renee Roberts
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Purpose/Hypothesis: Women treated for breast cancer report ongoing upper extremity disability with functional limitations; however, objective measures do not appear to explain the extent of perceived dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived stress level, fear of physical activity, self-reported upper extremity function, and objective measures of upper extremity function including range of motion (ROM), strength, and muscular endurance, among women treated for breast cancer.
Number of Subjects: 25
Materials/Methods: Women diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer in the past 12-60 months were evaluated using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), …
Biomechanical Testing Of An Exercise For Strengthening The Proximal Femur., Alyssa Osbourne
Biomechanical Testing Of An Exercise For Strengthening The Proximal Femur., Alyssa Osbourne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Based on the principles of cutting edge bone remodeling research, a unique therapeutic exercise device was designed specifically to improve bone quality at the most critical location of the proximal femur prone to fracture: the superior-lateral femoral neck where the fracture first initiates during a fall. The exercise/device is intended to work by inducing enough strain in the bone to stimulate the body’s natural bone remodeling mechanisms to increase bone density in the proximal femur and consequently prevent a fracture from arising if a fall to the side does occur.
In order to test the proposed exercise, experiments simulating the …
Mechanical Properties Of Retrieved Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene Acetabular Liners In Total Hip Arthroplasty, Gurpreet Singh
Mechanical Properties Of Retrieved Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene Acetabular Liners In Total Hip Arthroplasty, Gurpreet Singh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) has replaced the conventional ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) as the gold standard bearing surface in total hip arthroplasty (THA) due to superior wear characteristics and survivorship. However, HXLPE has demonstrated poorer mechanical properties, in vivo oxidation, and concerns of rim fractures. The purpose of this project was to study the mechanical properties at the rim of retrieved HXLPE acetabular liners.
We developed a simple technique for measurement of hardness at the rim of irradiated, remelted, HXLPE liners of a specific design. The effect of shelf time on mechanical properties of retrieved liners was determined and showed no correlation …
Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Urogenital Cancer Outcomes: Clinical Measures Of Lymphedema—A Systematic Review, Joy C. Cohn, Hannah Geyer, Jeannette Lee, Mary Insana Fisher
Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Urogenital Cancer Outcomes: Clinical Measures Of Lymphedema—A Systematic Review, Joy C. Cohn, Hannah Geyer, Jeannette Lee, Mary Insana Fisher
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Background: Valid and reliable tools to assess lymphedema are necessary to accurately evaluate status and to objectively document and measure the results of interventions. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each measure can inform the clinician's choice of the appropriate tool to be used in the clinic or research setting.
Purpose: To identify reliable and valid measurement techniques that are sensitive to change for assessing edema volume or soft tissue change in the lower extremities or genital region of patients with lymphedema.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to assess the published psychometric properties and clinical feasibility …
Effect Of Exercise Position On Percent Changes In Serratus Anterior Muscle Thickness, Joseph M. Day
Effect Of Exercise Position On Percent Changes In Serratus Anterior Muscle Thickness, Joseph M. Day
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Objective: A reliable method for measuring SA thickness with ultrasound imaging has been reported, yet the ability to detect differences in levels of contractility has yet to be established. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are differences in the percent change in thickness of the SA during four different exercise positions performed by healthy individuals.
Design: Observational study
Setting: Laboratory
Participants: Twenty-eight healthy participants, mean age 26 (SD 4, 57% female, 100% right handed)
Methods: Volunteers were positioned in a standardized sitting posture and anatomical landmarks were marked for ultrasound probe positioning. Two resting and two …

BACKGROUND: Distraction-type rods mechanically stabilize the thorax and improve lung growth and function by applying distraction forces at the rib, spine, pelvis, or a combination of locations. However, the amount of stability the rods provide and the amount the thorax needs is unknown.
METHODS: Five freshly frozen and thawed cadaveric thoracic spine specimens were tested for lateral bending, flexion/extension, and axial rotation in displacement control (1°/sec) to a load limit of ±5 Nm for five cycles after which a growth-friendly unilateral rod was placed in a simulated rib-to-lumbar attachment along the right side. The specimens were tested again in the …
