Assessing Virtual Versus In-Person Experiential Learning And Medical High-Fidelity Simulation In Medical Student Pediatric Clerkship Training, Andrew Mitchell Berry Dec 2023

Assessing Virtual Versus In-Person Experiential Learning And Medical High-Fidelity Simulation In Medical Student Pediatric Clerkship Training, Andrew Mitchell Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation and experiential training have been incorporated into medical school training for decades. The utilization of medical simulations has become an invaluable tool in healthcare education and training. However, circumstances such as limited resources, geographical constraints, or global health crises may hinder the feasibility of conducting in-person medical simulations. In these scenarios, virtual medical simulations emerge as a compelling alternative. While there are many ways to accomplish experiential-based learning, many faculty and students feel Socratic learning styles provide the best learning experience.

As medical students had just finished a predominantly virtual preclinical year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the research …

Implementing A Designated Follow-Up Plan To Increase Patient Adherence To Surveillance Recommendations After Endovascular Aortic Repair, Stacey Basta Jul 2023

Implementing A Designated Follow-Up Plan To Increase Patient Adherence To Surveillance Recommendations After Endovascular Aortic Repair, Stacey Basta

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Patients who have had endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) require lifelong monitoring and imaging surveillance due to the increased risk of developing serious complications. Despite specific EVAR follow-up and guideline recommendations, patient adherence remains poor.

PICOT: In adult patients who have undergone endovascular aortic repair (P), does the use of a designated follow-up plan(I), compared to the current routine follow-up care (C), increase annual adherence of patients to the recommended post-surgical surveillance (O) over 10 weeks (T)?

Evidence: The literature supported the need to improve lifelong surveillance for EVAR patients, noting a positive correlation between improved patient adherence and …

Early Onset Hypertension Objective Structured Clinical Examinations, Katrina Morace May 2023

Early Onset Hypertension Objective Structured Clinical Examinations, Katrina Morace

Doctoral Projects

Hypertension is known as a condition in which raised blood vessel pressure persists. On a normal day, the pressure can rise and fall causing damage to the heart. When the pressure stays at higher readings, damage can be caused to the heart and can also lead to additional health problems. Another word for high blood pressure is hypertension. The blood is carried to all body parts from the heart by the arteries. The harder the heart pumps the higher the blood pressure (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). When hypertension is not diagnosed and treated at an early …

The Effects Of Peers For Young Adults On Anxiety And Quality Of Life For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alysha Cecile Dagg May 2023

The Effects Of Peers For Young Adults On Anxiety And Quality Of Life For Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Alysha Cecile Dagg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social skills deficits as well as comorbid anxiety are two characteristics commonly experienced by people with Autism Spectrum Disorder - Level 1 (ASD-1; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). These characteristics are also both contributors to a lower quality of life for young adults (Smith et al., 2019). The current study aimed to identify how the quality of life and anxiety are affected by social skills intervention, specifically the PEERS® for Young Adults program (Laugeson, 2017). PEERS® for Young Adults is an evidence-based social skills intervention intended to support individuals with ASD-1 (Laugeson, 2017). Prior research has demonstrated its success in both …

Development Of Neuraxial Anesthesia Educational Videos For Nurse Anesthesia Students, Mackenzie Schutt, Kaylie Lajeunesse May 2023

Development of Neuraxial Anesthesia Educational Videos for Nurse Anesthesia Students

Kaylie LaJeunesse, BSN, RN, SRNA & Mackenzie Schutt, BSN, RN, SRNA

Performance and evaluation of anesthetic procedures, specifically neuraxial anesthesia, are core components of nurse anesthesia curriculums. Teaching methods must provide nurse anesthesia students with the proper tools and knowledge to perform skills confidently and proficiently. Traditional teaching methods have fallen short of providing the necessary instruction for optimal student success. Incorporating video-learning resources on neuraxial anesthesia into course curriculums can significantly improve nurse anesthesia practice by better-preparing students for the clinical setting. Video learning increases student engagement and facilitates …

Multimorbidity In Diverse Populations: Stratified Analysis Of Race/Ethnicity, Age, Obesity, And Healthcare Costs, Manal Alshakhs Apr 2023

Multimorbidity In Diverse Populations: Stratified Analysis Of Race/Ethnicity, Age, Obesity, And Healthcare Costs, Manal Alshakhs

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

This research aims to fill an essential gap in understanding how Body Mass Index (BMI) cutoffs relate to multimorbidity across races in the United States (US). Given the significant and growing rates of obesity and multimorbidity, as well as the known differences in healthy fat distribution among different races, this is an important area of research. BMI is a widely used but imperfect measure of obesity, as it does not account for differences in body composition. However, it is still used as a diagnostic tool. It is vital to ensure that the cutoffs used to define obesity are appropriate for …
