Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (“dry eye”) is a common (14%–30% of adults over age 48) though difficult to treat condition that causes both discomfort and disability with associated dryness, pain, and visual disturbances. Etiology is not clearly understood but is likely varied, with a subset of patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain referred to as “burning eye syndrome.” This review of existing literature summarizes the clinical presentation, natural history, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities of burning eye syndrome.

Attitudes Toward Mindfulness And Adherence In Chronic Pain Management, Sarah Johnson
Global Honors Theses
Chronic pain is a global public health problem, affecting 10-25% of the population. Mindfulness is an effective treatment but requires consistency. Because of its benefit, it is important to examine obstacles to mindfulness practice. In order to determine if negative attitudes toward mindfulness are related to non-adherence, 748 adults with chronic pain were recruited to fill out a series of questionnaires assessing treatment adherence and attitudes toward mindfulness. We found that positive attitudes toward mindfulness predicted reduced adherence. However, those who had more positive feelings toward mindfulness made more attempts at the therapy. Upper and middle-class participants had more positive …

Background: Chronic pain among individuals with cancer can adversely affect quality of life (QOL) and physical, social, and emotional functioning. Therapeutic horticulture has been shown to be effective for treating various medical conditions; however, the focus on cancer survivors with chronic pain is marginal. This study evaluated the effectiveness of therapeutic horticulture for women with cancer living with chronic pain.
Method: A mixed methods experimental design was used to examine the impact of a 6-week therapeutic horticulture program with seven females with cancer who presented with chronic pain for longer than 3 months. Perception of pain, QOL, and …

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications
Background – Use of integrative health services has been shown beneficial in chronic pain management. The COVID-19 pandemic altered access to integrative health therapies. The recommendations to avoid social contact has led to high rates of social isolation. Social isolation has many negative implications including worsening of anxiety and depression symptoms, and influences on our immune, endocrine, and cardiovascular function. Providing access to such therapies at home from trusted practitioners might help to alleviate pain and stressors commonly associated with social isolation.
Local problem – The aim of this project was to create an online platform that offers integrative health …
