No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson
No One Should Have To Give Birth Alone: An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Community-Based Doula Programs Serving Ethnic Minorities In San Francisco, Maria Margaret Nelson
Master's Projects and Capstones
Adverse birth outcomes for both the parent and the child disproportionately affect people of color. Evidence demonstrates that one of the ways to mitigate these negative consequences is through the utilization of a doula, a trained birth companion that is not a medical provider but whose role it is to physically and emotionally support the patient through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Community-based doula programs, where the doula is of the same cultural background as the client, are particularly effective in improving birth outcomes in communities of color by providing culturally competent care and helping to navigate a healthcare system that …
Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Prenatal Stress, Anxiety, And Depression, Fiona Kate Rice
Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Prenatal Stress, Anxiety, And Depression, Fiona Kate Rice
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Pregnant people in the United States (US) face myriad barriers to resource accessibility when seeking support, including financial gatekeeping, discrimination, and cis-gendering of the process. Commodification of prenatal support is exhaustive and contributes to a growing exclusivity of traditionally accessible interventions designed to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and to promote positive fetal outcomes and parent-child bond. Mindfulness-based interventions are particularly appropriate for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression in pregnancy. Mindfulness-based interventions are intersectional, accessible means of pregnancy and childbirth support with evidence-based outcomes of positive birth experiences and results. Mindfulness is defined as nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. …
Regular Exercise Throughout Pregnancy And Maternal Recovery Postpartum, Rachel Jenkins
Regular Exercise Throughout Pregnancy And Maternal Recovery Postpartum, Rachel Jenkins
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
Abstract
Introduction: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that “women with uncomplicated pregnancies should be encouraged to engage in aerobic and strength-conditioning exercises before, during, and after pregnancy.”1 Many pregnant mothers seek guidance regarding exercise regimens’ safety and efficacy. This paper is a systematic review of the current literature on the topic of exercise regimens performed throughout pregnancy and maternal postpartum recovery.
Purpose: To determine if following the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommendation to engage in regular aerobic and strength-conditioning exercises throughout pregnancy contributes to easier deliveries as measured by the number of caesarean sections, time …
Dancing While Pregnant: Benefits And How To Do It Safely, Teagen Boyle
Dancing While Pregnant: Benefits And How To Do It Safely, Teagen Boyle
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Dancing While Pregnant by Teagen Boyle is about a very important question any female athlete may find themselves asking. How can I continue my sport while pregnant? Pregnancy is very strenuous and takes a toll on the human body; however, it is very important to stay healthy and continue exercising. Dance is a safe, no-contact sport that is really on the terms of the dancer. Therefore, dance is most likely a fun, safe form of exercise for pregnant women. Diving into research and looking up articles one may find little to no research. That is because there is barely any …
Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Birth Experience : A Comparison Between Mexico And The United States., Alice J Darling
Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Birth Experience : A Comparison Between Mexico And The United States., Alice J Darling
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Honors Theses
This study investigates the maternal birth experience through a cross-cultural lens. While the field of medical anthropology has researched birth practices of many cultures, few cross-cultural studies have been performed and no recent studies have suggested a transition in birthing. Ethnographic interviews with women and practitioners in Yucatán, Mexico and with women in Kentucky, United States allowed for a better understanding of the respective birthing environments. Grounded theory was then employed to develop a birth transition theory explaining changes occurring when society transitions from traditional birth practitioners to allopathic birth practitioners. The themes of knowledge, expectation and power were isolated …

The Use Of Electroacupuncture For Cervical Ripening In Pregnant Women, Becky A. Nauta
The Use Of Electroacupuncture For Cervical Ripening In Pregnant Women, Becky A. Nauta
Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare cervical ripening outcomes, based on Bishop scoring methodology, of pregnant women receiving usual care treatment (UC) with those receiving electroacupuncture plus UC. A sample of 36 pregnant women completing their 39th week of gestation was randomized into one of the two groups. The women in the UC group continued to meet with their provider on a weekly basis until delivery. The women in the electroacupuncture plus usual care group met with their provider on a weekly basis and also received electroacupuncture treatments: three in the 39th gestational week and two in …
Toward Enhancing Treatment For Pregnant Smokers: Laying The Groundwork For The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Approaches, Amy Michele Loree
Toward Enhancing Treatment For Pregnant Smokers: Laying The Groundwork For The Use Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine Approaches, Amy Michele Loree
Wayne State University Dissertations
Tobacco is the most widely used drug of abuse during pregnancy. Despite efforts to reduce perinatal tobacco use, its prevalence has remained steady over at least the past decade, suggesting that efforts to reduce smoking prevalence before and during pregnancy have not been effective. Although a range of effective treatments exist, most pregnant smokers neither seek nor receive any kind of treatment. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments may be ideal as alternative, low-cost approaches capable of reaching and assisting a greater proportion of pregnant women with smoking cessation. This study examined characteristics and treatment utilization practices of pregnant smokers …
Ginseng Extract Treatment Influences On Preimplantation Development In Vitro, And Pregnancy And Post-Partum Development In The Mouse, Danyka D. Belanger
Ginseng Extract Treatment Influences On Preimplantation Development In Vitro, And Pregnancy And Post-Partum Development In The Mouse, Danyka D. Belanger
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Ginseng is one of the most commonly consumed herbal medicines in the world. Consumption is highest in females, thus my purpose was to define the concentration responsive effects of North American alcoholic and aqueous ginseng extracts on preimplantation development in vitro and on pregnancy and post-partum development in the mouse. 2-cell embryos from female mice were cultured with 5 different concentrations of both extracts, ginsenosides Rb1, Rg1 and Re, a combinatorial ginsenoside solution and a polysaccharide fraction. Embryonic development and recovery from treatment was assessed. To investigate in vivo effects of ginseng extracts, females were gavaged with 50 mg/kg and …
Folk Medical Beliefs And Practices Concerning Women's Health And The Female Body In Southern Appalachia., Emily Lucinda Dale
Folk Medical Beliefs And Practices Concerning Women's Health And The Female Body In Southern Appalachia., Emily Lucinda Dale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores folk medical beliefs and practices regarding women's health issues and the female body, specifically menstruation, pregnancy, abortion and menopause, in the Southern Appalachian region. This research reveals what information was given to young girls, by whom was it given, and the effect this had on their self-image and on how they communicated about their bodies as they matured. Other key elements include the social restrictions surrounding menstruation and the ways these beliefs were communicated to young girls. In addition, this project presents information on the treatment of symptoms such as cramps, bloating, headaches, excessive bleeding, lack of …
