Self-Care Strategies Of Athletic Trainers, Lindsey E. Eberman, Justin P. Young, Matthew J. Rivera, Kenneth E. Games

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Strategies for reducing burnout and improving work-life balance have been recommended for both organizations and individual athletic trainers. Little is known about what types of self-care (SC) strategies are already being used by athletic trainers. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the number and type of SC strategies used by athletic trainers on a weekly basis. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design with web-based survey to explore the SC strategies used by athletic trainers. The survey instrument consisted of a SC checklist which asked the participants to select all the SC strategies they engage in …

Experiences And Outcomes Of Athletic Trainers Using Complementary And Integrative Health: A Qualitative Study, Katherine Cantlebary, Matthew J. Rivera, Shannon Hamilton, Lindsey E. Eberman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Complementary and integrative health (CIH) is common among patients in the U.S. and is a useful tool for athletic trainers to provide holistic treatment. There is currently minimal literature regarding athletic trainers’ experiences and outcomes of using CIH modalities for patient treatments. The purpose of this project was to explore the experiences and outcomes of collegiate athletic trainers using CIH modalities. Methods: This study used qualitative semi-structured interviews, analyzed by phenomenological approach, using consensual qualitative research analysis. Trustworthiness and credibility of the consensus codebook were established by member checking, multi-analyst triangulation, and auditing. Fourteen athletic trainers (7 females, 7 …

Knowledge Of Complementary And Integrative Health Among Collegiate Athletic Trainers, Amanda Flaig, Matthew J. Rivera, Lindsey E. Eberman

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Complementary and integrative health (CIH) interventions are non-mainstream modalities used to complement traditional care and are used by athletic trainers. Interventions encompassing CIH can help provide holistic care that is patient-centered. However, there is no previous research on the attitudes and use of CIH in everyday clinical care. The purpose of this project is to investigate athletic trainers’ use and attitudes towards CIH interventions. Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey including demographics, CIH integration, and the Complementary Health Belief Questionnaire (CHBQ) was sent out to a random sample of athletic trainers. Measures of central tendency were calculated to characterize …

Introducing A Physical Therapist-Led Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Training For Pain: A Clinical Perspective, Joseph Tatta

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Mounting evidence supports the use of cognitive and behavioral techniques as part of physical therapist practice. These methods are used within a physical therapist’s multimodal treatment approach for the management of pain and to facilitate health behavior change. There is a multitude of evidence-based cognitive behavioral techniques to choose from including newer approaches based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Yet few studies have examined physical therapists’ perceptions to learning and implementing ACT into clinical practice. The purpose of this manuscript is to present a clinical perspective of physical therapists learning about and incorporating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in clinical …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Tai Chi on the dynamic balance in younger, active community-based adults with no history of lower extremity injury or balance problems. Methods: Fourteen subjects (4 males / 10 females; age 23.6 + 6.2 years-old; height 166.5 ± 11.1 cm; weight 75.9 ± 19.3 kg) completed a 13-week undergraduate Tai Chi course. Dynamic balance was assessed at the beginning and the end of the course using the Y-Balance test. Results: Post-hoc testing showed significant improvements in anterior (P=0.007) and posterior lateral (P=0.003) reach distances with …

The Importance Of Including Co-Factor Information When Reporting Resting Heart Rate, John Hart Jan 2016

The Importance Of Including Co-Factor Information When Reporting Resting Heart Rate, John Hart

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Resting heart rate, sometimes referred to as resting pulse rate (RPR) is taken for various reasons in the various health care professions. As with many physiological tests, there are a number of basic factors that can affect RPR, such as gender and position of the patient during measurement. In most papers, these basic factors are included but in some they are not. If such information is lacking, the meaningfulness of the reported RPR is diminished. The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the importance of including such information when reporting on RPR data.
