Mammalian extinction worldwide during the Late Pleistocene has been a major focus for Quaternary biochronology and paleoecology. These extinctions have been variably attributed to the impacts of climate change and human interference. However, until relatively recently, research has been largely restricted to the Americas, Europe, and Australasia. We present the oldest Middle-Late Pleistocene stratified and numerically dated faunal succession for the Indian subcontinent from the Billasurgam cave complex. Our data demonstrate continuity of 20 of 21 identified mammalian taxa from at least 100,000 y ago to the present, and in some cases up to 200,000 y ago. Comparison of this …

Challenges And Lessons From Systematic Literature Reviews For The Australian Dietary Guidelines, Margaret Allman-Farinelli, Annette Byron, Clare Collins, Janelle Gifford, Peter G. Williams

In 2009-10 the Dietitians Association of Australia conducted a series of systematic reviews for the National Health and Medical Research Council to generate evidence statements to inform the revision of the Dietary Guidelines for Australians. In total 202 body of evidence statements were constructed and assigned a grading detailing the certainty with which each could be used to inform policy. This paper describes some of the challenges and insights gained from the process, specifically related to: study type, study quality assessment, the lack of quantified data, diet exposure, definition of a healthy population, generalisability and applicability, and resource allocation. It …

The Benefits Of Breakfast Cereal Consumption: A Systematic Review Of The Evidence Base, Peter G. Williams Jan 2014

The Benefits Of Breakfast Cereal Consumption: A Systematic Review Of The Evidence Base, Peter G. Williams

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

There have been no comprehensive reviews of the relation of breakfast cereal consumption to nutrition and health. This systematic review of all articles on breakfast cereals to October 2013 in the Scopus and Medline databases identified 232 articles with outcomes related to nutrient intake, weight, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, digestive health, dental and mental health, and cognition. Sufficient evidence was available to develop 21 summary evidence statements, ranked from A (can be trusted to guide practice) to D (weak and must be applied with caution). Breakfast cereal consumption is associated with diets higher in vitamins and minerals and lower in …

Evaluating Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (Osca) In Undergraduate Nursing, Leah East, Kathleen Peters, Elizabeth J. Halcomb, Debra Raymond, Yenna Salamonson Jan 2014

Evaluating Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (Osca) In Undergraduate Nursing, Leah East, Kathleen Peters, Elizabeth J. Halcomb, Debra Raymond, Yenna Salamonson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

The aims of this mixed methods study were to gain insight into how individual assessors determine an Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA) result for undergraduate nursing students and identify whether individual assessor perceptions and professional characteristics have an impact on students' results. Results from 25 participants showed that although less than half (44%) of the participants were teaching in the course that they were assessing, the participants were highly experienced clinicians and nearly three-quarters (72%) had completed formal teaching qualifications. There were wide variations in pass rates (16.7-90%) between assessors. The widest disparity was observed between assessors with and those …

Extracellular Adenosine 5'-Triphosphate And Lipopolysaccharide Induce Interleukin-1Β Release In Canine Blood, Mari Spildrejorde, Stephen J. Curtis, Belinda L. Curtis, Ronald Sluyter Jan 2014

Extracellular Adenosine 5'-Triphosphate And Lipopolysaccharide Induce Interleukin-1Β Release In Canine Blood, Mari Spildrejorde, Stephen J. Curtis, Belinda L. Curtis, Ronald Sluyter

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Binding of extracellular adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to the damage-associated molecular pattern receptor P2X7 or the pathogen-associated molecular pattern receptor Toll-like receptor (TLR)4, respectively, can induce the release of the pleiotropic cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β in humans and mice. However, the release of IL-1β in dogs remains poorly defined. Using a canine IL-1β enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, this study investigated whether ATP or LPS could induce IL-1β release in a canine blood-based assay. Short-term incubations (30 min) with ATP induced IL-1β release in LPS-primed canine blood, and this process could be near-completely impaired by the P2X7 antagonist, A438079. In contrast, …

"More Than Just A Meal": A Qualitative Study Of The Views And Experiences Of Older People Using A Meals On Wheels (Mow) Service, Kaitlyn Evans, Fiona Manning, Karen Walton, Victoria Traynor, Anne-Therese Mcmahon, Karen Charlton Jan 2014

"More Than Just A Meal": A Qualitative Study Of The Views And Experiences Of Older People Using A Meals On Wheels (Mow) Service, Kaitlyn Evans, Fiona Manning, Karen Walton, Victoria Traynor, Anne-Therese Mcmahon, Karen Charlton

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Background: Community based Meal on Wheels (MOW) services contribute to promoting the independence of older people through the provision of home delivered meals. It is important to actively explore the views, expectations and experiences of clients to ensure their services are contemporary. Objectives: To explore the views and experiences of older people who are MOW clients about the meal service and the meaning of food and mealtimes. Design: A phenomenological approach using semi-structured face-to-face interviews which were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. Line-by-line thematic analysis was undertaken until saturation was reached and codes, categories and final themes were agreed by …
