Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of The Impact Of Teamwork And Collaboration On Patient Care, Riana Square May 2024

Nursing Students’ Perceptions Of The Impact Of Teamwork And Collaboration On Patient Care, Riana Square

Honors College Theses

Teamwork and communication are two topics that a vast majority of nursing students are introduced to in their first semester of nursing school. Many nursing students have a desire to improve their communication skills and have a better understanding of the inner workings of interdisciplinary collaboration. A study across multiple cohorts of Georgia Southern Nursing students was conducted to explore their perceptions of the correlation between teamwork and patient care outcomes. This study also explores nursing students’ readiness to communicate with other healthcare professionals and the effectiveness of the means to practice these communication skills while in nursing school. It …

Undergraduate Nursing Education Simulation Training Using Virtual Reality Goggles And Teamstepps Methodology, Jennifer Koalenz Mar 2024

Undergraduate Nursing Education Simulation Training Using Virtual Reality Goggles And Teamstepps Methodology, Jennifer Koalenz

SACAD: John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days

Abstract

Due to changes in educational processes during global pandemic restrictions and the rapid pace of innovation and developments in virtual reality technology, this modality of education is expected to become a common presence in healthcare education. Immersive simulation activities can be an effective way to facilitate collaboration and communication skills in a constructivist-based classroom. Evidence shows that virtual simulation improves critical thinking skills, psychomotor skills, and decision making (Padilha et al., 2019). In addition, the availability of an on-demand, customizable scenario is highly useful to supplement clinical learning when necessary. But many caution that virtual simulation, just like any …

Graduate Perspectives On A Multi-Session, Experiential Interprofessional Education Activity Designed To Develop Core Competencies In Interprofessional Collaboration, Beth Gustafson, Amy L. Brzuz Mar 2024

Graduate Perspectives On A Multi-Session, Experiential Interprofessional Education Activity Designed To Develop Core Competencies In Interprofessional Collaboration, Beth Gustafson, Amy L. Brzuz

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) in healthcare facilitates efficiency and optimal outcomes for healthcare consumers. To prepare future healthcare workers to engage in collaborative practice, higher education institutions are investing time and resources to engage students in interprofessional education (IPE) experiences. These experiences vary in scope and nature and can include experiential learning (EL) components. Designing these experiences involves much time, planning, and resources from faculty. This study’s purpose was to better understand recent graduates’ perspectives on their experiences as students during an EL/IPE activity, as the results could be used to garner support for these experiences. Method: This qualitative study …

Joint Problem-Solving Orientation, Mutual Value Recognition, And Performance In Fluid Teamwork Environments, Michaela Kerrissey, Zhanna Novikov Jan 2024

Joint Problem-Solving Orientation, Mutual Value Recognition, And Performance In Fluid Teamwork Environments, Michaela Kerrissey, Zhanna Novikov

Journal Articles

INTRODUCTION: Joint problem-solving orientation (JPS) has been identified as a factor that promotes performance in fluid teamwork, but research on this factor remains nascent. This study pushes the frontier of understanding about JPS in fluid teamwork environments by applying the concept to within-organization work and exploring its relationships with performance, mutual value recognition (MVR), and expertise variety (EV).

METHODS: This is a longitudinal, survey-based field study within a large United States healthcare organization

RESULTS: Our results affirm a moderated mediation model wherein JPS enhances performance, both directly and through MVR; EV serves as a moderator in the JPS-MVR relationship. JPS …

Comparing Individual Versus Team Decision-Making Using Simulated Exercises In A Master Of Public Health Program, Shannon L. Sibbald, Nicole Campbell, Cecilia Flores-Sandoval, Mark Speechley

Health Studies Publications

In line with the complex modern health care system and the increasing importance of interprofessional teams, a powerful strategy to facilitate the acquisition of essential teamwork skills and expose students to complex decision-making processes is learning in teams. The purpose of our study was to obtain empirical evidence of superior decision-making by teams versus individuals in two simulated decision-making exercises conducted 4 months apart. We collected quantitative data from three cohorts of Master of Public Health students to determine if teams make better decisions than individuals (“team effect”) between September and January. Students completed simulated emergency survival exercises requiring them …

Examining The Need For Change By Describing The Attitudes And Perceptions Of Team Communications Related To Patient Care And Safety Among Ambulatory Clinic Healthcare Staff, Peter Seivers Apr 2023

Examining The Need For Change By Describing The Attitudes And Perceptions Of Team Communications Related To Patient Care And Safety Among Ambulatory Clinic Healthcare Staff, Peter Seivers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Medical errors account up to 250,000 patient deaths annually. Research suggests medical errors are attributable to poor healthcare team communications. The Institute of Medicine posits that communication and teamwork are essential components to safe and successful health care environments. According to the Joint Commission poor communication is considered the root cause of nearly 80% of all serious medical errors. Consequently, the Department of Defense and Agency for Healthcare Research and Research created a team-based training program, known as TeamSTEPPS®, which has shown to improve team communication, performance, effectiveness, patient safety, satisfaction, and health outcomes in healthcare settings. Despite evidence supporting …

Cross-Functional Team Collaboration For Enhancing Timely And Effective Emergency Department Care, Osaigbovo Osemwegie Jan 2023

Cross-Functional Team Collaboration For Enhancing Timely And Effective Emergency Department Care, Osaigbovo Osemwegie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractMany US hospitals report overcrowding in the emergency department (ED) with increased ambulance diversion. Operating at overcapacity risks staff members' ability to provide timely and effective emergency care to patients, exposing them to poor health outcomes. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate whether a correlation exists between cross-functional team collaboration and timely and effective ED care for patients who left 548 national hospital EDs before being seen between 2020 and 2021. The study's independent variable was cross-functional team collaboration, and the dependent variables were Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Measure scores: left before being …

Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio Jan 2023

Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Multidisciplinary team communication in robotic surgery presents several safety considerations for the intraoperative surgical patient. It is an important consideration since the surgeon and the operating room team are geographically distanced with the surgeon at the console, and the other team members situated at the patient bedside. Scrubbed team members are performing such functions as positioning the robotic arms as well as exchanging instruments, while the remaining interprofessional team members are coordinating multiple patient care activities. It therefore becomes imperative that the recognition of the potential for miscommunication is of paramount importance, and strategies need to be generated that will …
