A large tertiary care center in central Illinois saw an increase in erector spinae plane (ESP) block administration for abdominal surgery patients, but many anesthesia providers at the facility were not acquainted with the ESP block. This project aimed to develop a comprehensive educational program concerning the ESP block compared to thoracic epidural analgesia for major abdominal surgery patients and ultimately improve patient care. The program introduced the relevant anatomy, indications, technique, advantages, and disadvantages of ESP block and epidural analgesia. A ganglion cyst is a benign fluid-filled sac that develops idiopathically on the dorsal aspect of the wrist by the joint capsule or tendon sheath. It is diagnosed clinically, with MRI and ultrasound used for confirmation. Treatment includes immobilization, aspiration, hydrossection, steroid or hyaluronidase injection, and surgery. Although uncommon, Dorsal Ganglion Cysts (DGC) can lead to Dorsal Wrist Impingement (DWI) syndrome. This evidenced-based practice project sought to provide evidence to change a hospital policy on addressing pain during painful procedures on newborns with the use of nonpharmacological interventions. A literature search was conducted on three databases: PubMed, Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Cochrane. Twelve pieces of literature were included: nine randomized control trials, one systemic review, one meta-analysis, and one correlational study. The literature reviewed showed a strong positive correlation between using nonpharmacological interventions and lower pain scores of newborns during painful procedures.

This study aimed to compare the pain, function, surgical expectations, and coping mechanisms of patients from one such service trip to the United States.

The Australian Government called for the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety (RC) to investigate the serious concerns, neglects and abuses including the inadequate pain management seen in the sector. Purpose: Modern multimodal analgesia has been shown to significantly reduce opioid use following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study was conducted to determine if changing TKA discharge opioid prescriptions from automatic to upon request resulted in more opioid free recoveries without compromising pain control. Methods: Between December 2019 and August 2021, an orthopedic surgeon performed 144 primary unilateral TKAs; patients received the same multimodal analgesia protocol except for postoperative opioid prescribing. The first consecutively-treated cohort automatically received an opioid prescription following discharge (automatic group) and the second cohort received opioid prescriptions only upon request (upon request group). Prior clinical research has suggested that a dexamethasone mouth rinse might help prevent and/or treat this.
