Obesity is an epidemic crossing genders, ages, socioeconomic status, geography, and race/ethnicity. In Vermont, 11.3% of 10 to 17-year old are considered obese, thereby increasing risk for numerous health issues. One contributing factor is an increased tendency to eat away from home. This project aims to provide qualitative evidence regarding response to policy setting nutritional standards for kids' meals in Vermont restaurants.

In the U.S, the cost of diseases associated with unhealthy eating reaches $157 billion a year. In the Western Connecticut area, hypertension and diabetes are the top two reasons for admitting seniors to the hospital. Both of them can be managed by healthy diet and exercise. This project aims to identify the barriers to eating healthy among elderly in Brookfield, CT, and to discuss potential interventions that can be implanted to address the identified barriers.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current practices related to obesity in the primary care setting in University of Kentucky’s Healthcare System. The specific aims were to: 1) Determine the proportion of obese patients who had an ICD-9/10 diagnosis code for obesity, 2) Determine the proportion of obese patients who received interventions related to their obesity, 3) Determine whether obesity diagnosis and interventions varied based on patient demographics, and 4) Compare actual obesity interventions to those outlined in the clinical practice guidelines.

Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States affecting 17% of all children. In Vermont 12.5% of children are obese. This carries increased risk for many health problems and an increased cost of medical care averaging $19,000 per obese child over a lifetime. This project aims to teach children about healthy food choices and exercise.

Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide. Approximately 29.1 million people or 9.3% of the United States population has diabetes (Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 2014). Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 and is projected by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be the seventh leading cause of death globally by 2030. The popularity of marathon running has grown exponentially since the 1970s (Noakes, 2003). This major gain in popularity has led to an increased interest in hydration and nutrition for marathon runners (Tucker et al 2009). The effects of dietary factors such as carbohydrates (CHO) and water on endurance has been extensively studied related to performance, but few studies have examined nutrition’s effect on feelings of exertion. There are many local and national resources available but no single place where patient’s can find links to national as well as local resources in the Central Vermont community.
