Evaluation Of Public Radon Messaging In Kentucky As Compared To Three Other States, Abigail Knapp

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Radon poses a large health risk to those exposed to it, as it is an invisible, odorless, carcinogenic gas. Kentucky has high ambient levels of radon, but public awareness remains low as tobacco has been publicized as the main cause of lung cancer. As Kentucky has the highest incidence of lung and bronchial cancers in the United States, we aimed to examine the state’s health department radon page to see if it has sufficient information to warn residents about radon and provide resources. We reviewed the current Kentucky public messaging, radon rates, testing rates, and legislation compared to Ohio, Washington, …

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Heavy rains at night caused severe flooding in eastern Kentucky on 28 July 2022, resulting in 39 deaths. Using publicly available information, we assembled a database of these fatalities, including demographic characteristics and location of death. We perturbed fatality locations and plotted them on a topographical map highlighting mountaintop removal mining with valley fill sites, where mountaintops were excavated to mine thin seams of coal. This map reveals many flood fatalities occurred along rivers or streams near such sites. Previous research suggests that surface mining has contributed to the majority of land cover change in this region, and this has …

Theses and Dissertations--Nutrition and Food Systems

The population is rapidly increasing all over the world. As foods are produced for us to consume, the food system generates negative environmental impacts at each step. The extent of damage generated by food production depends on the amount of land, water, and energy depleted. These environmental impacts can result in reduced quantities of food produced, damages to the land and water used to grow/produce food, pollution of food, and food waste. All of which impact the amount of product produced. Thereby, shifting food-related behaviors of consumers toward sustainable eating may be a way to promote the health of people …
