How Pornography Consumption Affects The Consumer And A Biblical Response To The Temptations Of Modern Sexuality, Peyton Mayes

Senior Honors Theses

It has been shown that 93% of boys and 62% girls prior to age 13 have been exposed to pornography (Sabina et al., 2008). Only in the last decade has the ability to view sexual content been made available to almost all groups of society, regardless of wealth or social status. This paper will address this issue by reviewing literature on the neuropathology, sexual dysfunctions, and violent content associated with pornography consumption. Although a significant amount of research has been done on the impacts of pornography, there is relatively little discussion on possible interventional methods. This gap in knowledge will …

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman Jul 2021

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman

Obsculta

Religion frames the lives and minds of individuals who practice the Christian faith. Regarding the mind, this statement can be understood both figuratively and literally. The thought processes of human beings who claim to believe in God are strongly influenced by their perspective of Deity and what they think God's primary characteristic is. While some view God as loving, others view God as mainly angry and punishing. The way this question is answered by an individual reveals much about his or her neurocircuitry and which brain structures are most active and developed. These circuits and structures then impact the behaviors …

Problem

An estimated 12.7% of the US population meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) criteria for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The annual cost to the society, including emergency room visits, lost days at work, and accidents on the road is in the billions. The impact of this disorder on the family, the community, and the individual is immeasurable. A growing body of literature supports an association between religious and spiritual beliefs and behaviors and recovery from alcohol addiction. This project is an investigation of this association. The goal is to offer some …

Transcendent Matters: Family Relationships Associated With How One Experiences God, Hilary Dalton Jun 2017

Transcendent Matters: Family Relationships Associated With How One Experiences God, Hilary Dalton

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

For religious families, an important but understudied aspect of spirituality is

how their perceptions of God influence their family lives. Most research

addresses religious behaviors such as attendance, prayer, or degree of salience

(how important/central is religion) or degree of literal belief (e.g., biblical

inerrancy). Relatively little research has addressed both substantive beliefs about

God as well as their potential impact on specific relational processes. Mahoney

has called for more research on the influence of substantive, specific beliefs as a

way to further our understanding of the religion-relationships linkage (Mahoney,

2013). Specifically, she has used the concept of relational spirituality …

Miracles, Science, Or Both?, Deborah Tyokighir Nov 2014

Miracles, Science, Or Both?, Deborah Tyokighir

Student Work

What is a miracle? What is science? Do miracles cease to be exciting when a scientific explanation is found? Does an event, explainable by science, undermine the power of the Divine? This work investigates the tension that we have created between divine action and natural law, using the medieval Eucharist experience and related scientific findings as an example of this tension.

Faith-Based Substance Abuse Treatment: Is It Just About God? Exploring Treatment Providers' Attitudes Toward Spirituality, Forgiveness And Secular Components Of Treatment, Geoffrey Lyons, Frank Deane, Peter Kelly

Peter Kelly

Although spirituality and forgiveness components of substance abuse treatment programs ar'e viewed as important by faithbased substance abuse treatment providers researchers have not compared their relative importance to other treatment components. This study evaluated the perceived importance of spiritually and forgiveness-based treatment components in comparison to other secular psycho-educational components in faith-based treatment programs. A brief survey was completed by 99 Salvation Army drug and alcohol treatment providers employed within Australian residential rehabilitation programs. The survey examined the relative importance treatment providers' placed on spiritual and secular components of treatment. The Role Of Religious Orientation And Religious Emphasis On God Attributions, Rebecca S. Hoffenberg Jun 2011

The Role Of Religious Orientation And Religious Emphasis On God Attributions, Rebecca S. Hoffenberg

Honors Theses

Religion exists as one of the greatest driving forces for a person’s political beliefs and overall outlook on life. In an attempt to understand such a complex phenomenon, researchers have examined factors that influence a person’s likelihood of acquiring religious beliefs. Past research has suggested a relation to religious emphasis in the home and future religious tendencies. This present study examined the role of acquisition of religious beliefs (via religious emphasis in one’s childhood home) and religious orientation on a person’s likelihood of making god attributions. It was hypothesized that religious emphasis and intrinsic religiosity would increase a person’s likelihood …
