Effects Of Housing Condition, Feeding Style, And Age On Fattening Performances, Comfort, And Some Slaughterhouse Characteristics In Eastern Anatolian Red Bulls, Sadretti̇n Yüksel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

It is crucial to bring domestic animal breeds to production and to produce meat based on sectoral structure. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of age, housing condition, and feeding style on fattening performance, comfort, and carcass characteristics of the Eastern Anatolian Red (EAR) bulls, a native breed which is suitable for adverse environmental conditions and marginal land as well as resistant to diseases. Twenty-five purebred EAR bulls (15 head of 2-year-olds and 10 head of 1-year-olds) were assigned randomly to 1 of 5 finishing programs after allocating by the age, feeding protocol, and environmental conditions. …

The aim was to investigate behaviors and stress responses of rams and ewes in an intensive fattening period. Out-of-breeding rams (Hemsin = 10, Karakul = 10) and ewes (Hemsin = 8, Karakul = 10) were used in the study. Sheep and rams belonging to each breed were placed into four different pens. Behavioral observations (individual, feeding, abnormal self-grooming behaviors) were performed 2 days a week for two groups a day for 1 h. Blood samples were collected at the beginning, at the 4th week, and at the end of the fattening period. Karakul ewes displayed significantly more feeding and rumination …

For this purpose, 300 day-old chicks were assigned to 5 treatments. Each treatment had 5 replicates and contained 12 birds each under a completely randomized design. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets were formulated with the inclusion of pigeon pea crushed (control, PPC), boiled with potash (PPP), boiled (PPB), soaked (PPS), or roasted (PPR) at the rate of 20% of the basal diet. The highest values …

Thirty-six lambs, the initial liveweights of which were around 26.5 kg, were divided into 3 groups according to slaughter weight [(Group 1: 35 kg, n = 12), (Group 2: 40 kg, n = 12) and (Group 3: 45 kg, n = 12)] at the beginning of the fattening period. The average daily gain was 203.1, 214.5 and 195.0 g/day, feed conversion efficiency was 7.3, 8.6 and 8.8 kg, and …

Some Behaviour Traits Observed On The Kıvırcık And Crossbred Lambs Raised In Intensive Conditions, Fevzi̇ Karaağaç, Mustafa Özcan, Türker Savaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the behaviour responses of the crossbred lambs [F_2 (German Black-Headed Mutton x Merino) x F_1 (Chios x Kıvırcık)] were compared with the Kıvırcık lambs in intensive conditions and the effects of genotype, sex and observation period on the behaviours displayed were investigated. The data were collected from 10 (5 male + 5 female) Kıvırcık and 10 (5 male + 5 female) crossbred lambs, which were weaned at the age of 2-2.5 months. The effect of genotype was found significant on the behaviours of feed consumption (P < 0.01), activities towards the bedding material (P < 0.05), rumination (P < 0.01), lying (P < 0.01), oral stereotypic behaviours (OSB) (P < 0.01) and behaviours towards animal (BTA) (P < 0.01). Behaviours towards other animals and oral stereotypic behaviours in the crossbred lambs were 50% and 27% more than the Kıvırcık lambs, respectively. Significant differences in terms of the activities towards the bedding material (P < 0.05), rumination (P < 0.01) and lying (P < 0.01) behaviours were determined between the male and female lambs. It was seen that the male lambs were more active in the breeding area. The effects of observation period were found significant on feeding (P < 0.01), drinking (P < 0.01), rumination (P < 0.01), lying (P < 0.01), standing (P < 0.01), oral stereotypic behaviours (P < 0.01) and behaviours towards animals (P < 0.05). Although the crossbred lambs were more superior for fattening program in terms of live weight gains, they showed more abnormal behaviours (OSB and BTA), which are the signs of stress, in the limited breeding area, depend on the lessening of the area by the rise in their live weights.

Positive relationships were found between body weight and rump width, and body length and chest width. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between the hot and cold carcass weight and the meat and fat. In addition, a of the carcass. No significant relationship was found between the bone and the other characteristics.

Estimation Of Individual Feed Consumption Of Fattening Lambs On Group Feeding, Ensar Başpinar, M. Muhip Özkan, Şafak Polatsü, İ. Yaman Yurtman, İ. Zafer Arik

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the this study was to develop a model to estimate the individual feed consumption of fattening lambs which were fed in groups adlibitum. The individual feed consumption and live weight data obtained from the 3 previous works weresed. The feed consumption of 76 lambs in 41 different fattening periods were estimated by using the developed model and individual consumption values and group averages were compared with the estimated values. The model estimated the individual feed intake better than group averages in 33 of 41 calculations.
