Balancing Nurture And Rigour: Seeking Effective Support For Nursing Students In Distress, Marti Harder
Balancing Nurture And Rigour: Seeking Effective Support For Nursing Students In Distress, Marti Harder
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
As higher educational institutions face a growing demand to graduate more nurses, and mental health and life stresses are recognized as increasing obstacles to student success, the timing is right for nursing programs to evaluate their traditionally rigorous program cultures. At Sunrise University in Western Canada, nursing students make up a large population seeking support services, and there is an increasing need for capacity building in faculty to support learners who are in distress. In this organizational improvement plan (OIP), I explore what can be enhanced or further developed to create more effective support for students who are in distress …

Anaesthesiology, East Africa
There is a high burden of critical illness in low-income countries (LICs), adding pressure to already strained health systems. Over the next decade, the need for critical care is expected to grow due to ageing populations with increasing medical complexity; limited access to primary care; climate change; natural disasters; and conflict. In 2019, the 72nd World Health Assembly emphasised that an essential part of universal health coverage is improved access to effective emergency and critical care and to “ensure the timely and effective delivery of life-saving health care services to those in need”. In this narrative review, we examine critical …

Purpose: From a social ecological viewpoint, the way in which individuals interact with their surrounding environment, has a direct effect on their actions. One approach to modify behavior change is to strive to change the environment, thus driving behavior change. Participating in physical activity (PA) is a behavior to be targeted, due to its numerous health benefits. A population to consider targeting for increasing PA is children, as creating PA habits in childhood has been shown to track into adulthood . Change at a population level should begin by focusing efforts on the environments in which children are spending their …
An Exploration Of The Critical Success Factors Associated With Implementing A Public Health Plan In Local Governments Within Western Australia, Anne Polley
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Public Health planning in local governments in Western Australia (WA) is a relatively new approach to addressing local health needs. The Western Australian Public Health Act came into effect in 2016. The Public Health Act 2016 encompasses a range of legislative requirements, some of which include the development of Local Public Health Plans. A range of roles within the local government workforce therefore are likely to require support to plan and implement Public Health Plans, which in the past have not directly been a component of their role. There is limited understanding and evidence of the barriers and enablers that …

Healthy Food Access In Missouri Food Pantries Through Evidence-Based Intervention, Darren Chapman
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
As food insecurity rates have seen a marked increase over the past ten years, a growing number of individuals rely on public and private food programs to meet household food needs. Despite the growing use of food pantries as a consistent food source and the disproportionate occurrence of negative health outcomes among food pantry users, few evidence-based initiatives have been implemented to improve users’ access to healthy foods. Consequently, empirical knowledge about the feasibility and effectiveness of programming as a means for improving healthy food access and well-being amongst pantry users remains limited. In response to this gap, the current …
