A Comparative Analysis Of Births For Women Aged 20-25 Vs. 35-39: An Examination Of Longitudinal Trends Of Volume And Outcomes, Kristy Hampton
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Maternal health impacts the well-being of society as it is commonly viewed as an indicator of public health welfare. Childbirth at an advanced maternal age (AMA) increases the likelihood of less favorable birth outcomes. As births to AMA women have increased over time, it is important to understand the impact age has on birth methods and birth outcomes. This research examined the proportion of births to women aged 20-25 years in comparison to AMA women aged 35-39 years in North Carolina from 2002-2017. The proportions of births to AMA women have increased over time despite increased risk and birth outcomes. …

The Impact Of Doulas On Birth Outcomes: A Rapid Systematic Review, Heather Higgins
The Impact Of Doulas On Birth Outcomes: A Rapid Systematic Review, Heather Higgins
Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations
Although most pregnancies in the United States are uncomplicated, adverse birth outcomes are more common in the U.S. than any other developed country (CDC, n.d.). The use of doula care during labor and delivery has shown to be effective in reducing adverse birth outcomes. A rapid systematic review was conducted to consolidate information on the effectiveness doulas have on certain adverse birth outcomes. These adverse birth outcomes included, low-birth weight, preterm birth, caesarean sections, shorter laboring time, and epidural use. The review of the literature was conducted using PubMed and search terms. PRISMA guidelines were followed and out of the …

From A Place Of Love: The Experiences Of Birthing In A Black-Owned Culturally-Centered Community Birth Center, J'Mag Karbeah, Rachel Hardeman, Numi Katz, Dimpho Orionzi, Katy Kozhimannil
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Introduction: Racial and ethnic disparities in perinatal health outcomes are among the greatest threats to population health in the United States. Black birthing communities are most impacted by these inequities due to structural racism throughout society and within health care settings. Although multiple studies have shown that structural racism and the disrespect associated with this system of inequity are the root causes of observed perinatal inequities, little scholarship has centered the needs of Black birthing communities to create alternative care models. Leaning on reproductive justice and critical race theoretical frameworks, this study explores good birth experiences as described by Black …

Midwifery Care's Potential To Improve Birth Outcomes And Experiences For Black Women And Infants, Neville Wintergerst-Burch
Midwifery Care's Potential To Improve Birth Outcomes And Experiences For Black Women And Infants, Neville Wintergerst-Burch
Undergraduate Theses
Black women and infants experience higher morbidity and mortality rates compared to white women and infants in the United States. Forces of systemic racism and poverty often lead to inadequate access to prenatal care for Black women, and care received is often compromised by implicit bias or barriers related to insurance coverage, impersonal provider-patient relationships, and poor healthcare literacy. Despite the rich history of Black Granny midwives in the United States, most Black women began using physicians for obstetric care in the 20th and 21st centuries. This integrative review explores how improving access to midwifery care for Black women could …

Stratified analyses were conducted by age (10-14 years, 15-17 years, 18-19 years, 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40+ years) and geographical region (Africa, Asia). Crude and confounder-adjusted means, …
Intersection Of Maternal Disability Status, Prescription Opioid Use Before And During Pregnancy, And Adverse Birth Outcomes, Chelsea Lynes Richard
Intersection Of Maternal Disability Status, Prescription Opioid Use Before And During Pregnancy, And Adverse Birth Outcomes, Chelsea Lynes Richard
Theses and Dissertations
Nationally, individuals with disability, like those with chronic health conditions, have higher rates of opioid use and misuse and are prescribed higher dosages than those without disability. Because opioid agonists and antagonists can cross the placenta rapidly, there is biological plausibility that they may have an impact on birth outcomes. Therefore, monitoring prescription opioid use, particularly among pregnant women, is of great public health importance. While evidence for the impact of opioid use on preterm birth and low birthweight are conflicting; findings are consistent that opioid use during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of small for gestational age, …

Investigating Birth Outcomes Among Deaf Mothers: Hospital Vs. Home Births, Aashni Kamra
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
This study examined birth outcomes among Deaf mothers who have given birth in a hospital setting versus a home setting. Deaf individuals are often marginalized in healthcare due to lack of accessibility, and therefore, the right to make their own informed decisions. This marginalization leads to inequality in health care, and oftentimes individuals within the Deaf community, with added intersectionalities, face even more discrimination. Deaf women face more health disparities in comparison to hearing women due to a variety of factors which include; lack of accessibility, medical professionals’ lack of cultural competency, and lack of inclusion in their healthcare decisions. …

The Effects Of Maternal Folate On Fetal Brain And Body Size Among Smoking Mothers, Korede K. Adegoke
The Effects Of Maternal Folate On Fetal Brain And Body Size Among Smoking Mothers, Korede K. Adegoke
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The adverse effects of maternal smoking on infant mortality and morbidity has been well documented in the literature. Maternal tobacco use is causally associated with fetal growth restriction and correlates negatively with folate intake and metabolism. Studies have examined the association between smoking and folate levels during pregnancy, but very few have assessed this relationship using objective and accurate measures of both variables. Furthermore, despite evidence of a causal association between smoking in pregnancy and intrauterine growth restriction, and a plausible relationship between tobacco use and low maternal folate which is required for optimal fetal growth, no experimental study has …

Deployment, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy Among U.S. Active-Duty Military Women, Michelle C. Nash
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Introduction. Today women comprise 15% of the U.S. active-duty military, but are often overlooked in research of the Armed Forces. While some of the challenges faced by women are similar to men, they encounter unique stressors related to childcare while deployed, sexual harassment and assault, and gynecological needs. Women are also more likely than men to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Both stress and PTSD have been linked to the development of chronic hypertension and some adverse birth outcomes. We hypothesized that post-9/11/2001 era military women who deployed or who had indicators of PTSD would be at greater risk of …

Healthy Beginnings: Exploring The Impact Of Parental Stress And Relationship Quality On Birth Outcomes, Anna A. Divney
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation consists of three studies exploring the effects of maternal and paternal experiences of stress and perceptions of relationship quality on length of gestation and birth weight. The first study assessed the association of parental relationship quality with the baby’s length of gestation and birth weight among 2,072 families in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study. Romantic relationships can be a substantial source of social support as well as stress, and have been shown to influence many health outcomes. Beyond crude relationship characteristics, however, few studies have assessed the association of other dimensions of relationship quality, such as …
