PCOM Scholarly Papers

The Src family kinases (SFK) plays an important role in multiple signal transduction pathways. Aberrant activation of SFKs leads to diseases such as cancer, blood disorders, and bone pathologies. By phosphorylating and inactivating SFKs, the C-terminal Src kinase (CSK) serves as the key negative regulator of SFKs. Similar to Src, CSK is composed of SH3, SH2, and a catalytic kinase domain. However, while the Src kinase domain is intrinsically active, the CSK kinase domain is intrinsically inactive. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that CSK is involved in various physiological processes including DNA repair, permeability of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), synaptic …

The Validity Of A Smartphone App (Myrecovery©) To Serve As Proxy For Activity Level In Athletes, Nicole K. Bryant, Alan Getgood, Trevor Birmingham, Ryan Degen, Kevin Willits, Robert Litchfield, J. Robert Giffin

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Background: When investigating the effectiveness of interventions to prevent recurrence of sports injuries, measuring exposure time (the time an athlete is at risk of injury) is crucial. The most accurate method of measuring exposure time involves hiring personnel to stand field side during practices and games to record minutes at risk. However, this does not capture other activities in which the athlete may take part that are not part of their formal sport that may put them at risk of re-injury. Another means to collect this data is to ask the athlete to self-report exposure. However, self-report diaries are often …

Exploring Physical Fitness Profile Of College Students Through Principal Component Analysis: A Case Study, Alejandra Rincon Cortes, Melissa Dorvily, Zoey Jackson, Michelle Etchebaster, Zacharias Papadakis

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Universities offer lifetime physical fitness (PF) courses and organize health fairs to keep their students physically fit. Despite these efforts, only 49.9% of US students meeting the National Guidelines for physical activity, reporting low fitness levels, as evaluated by the respective scores of the five fitness components. Fitness evaluation though is a time-consuming process and students’ time constrains have been postulated as reasons for lack of participation, motivation, and involvement. PURPOSE: Since time availability may influence students’ participation in a battery of fitness testing for evaluating their PF levels, this study aimed through principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the …

Heart Health: Lifestyle Factors That Influence Cardiovascular Well-Being, Holly K. Sawyer

Honors College Theses

Each year, one in every four deaths in the United States is a result of heart disease. As the leading cause of death among women and men from various ethnicities, heart disease may be overlooked when making everyday life decisions. As a group of genetic and behavioral conditions, heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. This may be due to the typical Western diet and daily life choices such as drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco. Heart diseases including atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease kill ten times more women than breast cancer (Lewis, et al., 2017). White men have …

Introduction: It is currently believed that children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) are less physically active than their peers. The school setting may offer a promising solution to allow children with and without IDD to engage in physical activity (PA). However, the current school-based PA levels of this population remain unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to compare the PA levels and related context of youth with and without IDD during the total school day, physical education, and recess. Methods: A total of 13 children (n = 3 with IDD) enrolled in first- and second grade participated …

Wellness And Coping Of Residents In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Christine M. Larson Jul 2020

Wellness And Coping Of Residents In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Christine M. Larson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Depression is common among older adults in long-term care (LTC) facilities. As many as 50%-80% of residents will experience depressive symptoms or have a diagnosis of depression. Depression increases the risk of poor health-related outcomes in older adults. A review of the literature suggests that early intervention using movement-based techniques decreases the risk for depression and improves depressive symptoms. This scholarly project aimed to reduce the risk of depression of residents in an LTC located in a suburban area in Midwestern United States. The LTC facility and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student implemented the Chair One Fitness program …

Profiling Transcription And Retrotransposition Of Mouse L1 Subfamilies, Lingqi Kong Jan 2020

Profiling Transcription And Retrotransposition Of Mouse L1 Subfamilies, Lingqi Kong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transposable elements, also called jumping genes, comprise almost 45% of the human genome. In contrast, only 1% of the human genome is protein-coding sequences. The function and advantages of maintaining such massive copies of transposable elements in the human genome are still unclear. Long interspersed element 1 (L1), the most substantial group and the only active autonomous transposable element in the human genome, has revealed its unique roles in many diseases. The insertional mutagenesis induced by L1 retrotransposition events could threaten human genomic stability and generate unexpected mutations. L1 overexpression has been documented in both somatic and germline cells and, …

Assessing The Impact Of Collared Versus Collarless Stems On Implant Migration, Patient Activity And Patient Function Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Maxwell E. Perelgut

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure used to treat end-stage hip osteoarthritis (OA). Various designs of implants are currently used to successfully perform these procedures. However, the role of these design variations on early implant migration and patient recovery is still being studied. In this study patients were prospectively randomized to receive either a collared or collarless femoral stem. Differences were compared between groups assessing implant migration, patient activity and patient functional differences. Compared to the collarless femoral stem, it is believed that a collared femoral stem provides improved axial stability early in the post-operative timeline. This study …

Investigating The Impact Of Nrmt1 Cancer Mutants On Catalytic Specificity And The Dna Damage Response., Kaitlyn Marie Shields Aug 2018

Investigating The Impact Of Nrmt1 Cancer Mutants On Catalytic Specificity And The Dna Damage Response., Kaitlyn Marie Shields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein methylation is an established and critical posttranslational modification controlling multiple cellular events. Alterations in protein methylation have been implicated in many diseases, including cancer. My work focused on the N-terminal trimethylase NRMT1 and the N-terminal monomethylase NRMT2. Previous work proposed that NRMT2 assists NRMT1 by priming its substrates for trimethylation. Importantly, NRMT1 mutations have been found in cancers, and loss of NRMT1 has been shown to promote oncogenic phenotypes in cancer cells. Together, this suggests that altered activities of NRMT1/2 may play a role in cancer progression. Although NRMT1/2 are 50% identical, they differ in key aromatic residues in …

Impact Of Climate Change And Human Activity On Soil Landscapes Over The Past 12,300 Years, Leo Rothacker, Anthony Dosseto, Alexander Francke, Allan Chivas, Nathalie Vigier, Anna M. Kotarba-Morley, Davide Menozzi

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Soils are key to ecosystems and human societies, and their critical importance requires a better understanding of how they evolve through time. However, identifying the role of natural climate change versus human activity (e.g. agriculture) on soil evolution is difficult. Here we show that for most of the past 12,300 years soil erosion and development were impacted differently by natural climate variability, as recorded by sediments deposited in Lake Dojran (Macedonia/Greece): short-lived ( < 1,000 years) climatic shifts had no effect on soil development but impacted soil erosion. This decoupling disappeared between 3,500 and 3,100 years ago, when the sedimentary record suggests an unprecedented erosion event associated with the development of agriculture in the region. Our results show unambiguously how differently soils evolved under natural climate variability (between 12,300 and 3,500 years ago) and later in response to intensifying human impact. The transition from natural to anthropogenic landscape started just before, or at, the onset of the Greek 'Dark Ages' (~3,200 cal yr BP). This could represent the earliest recorded sign of a negative feedback between civilization and environmental impact, where the development of agriculture impacted soil resources, which in turn resulted in a slowdown of civilization expansion.

Adiposity And Health In Zoo African And Asian Elephants, Daniella Chusyd Jan 2018

Adiposity And Health In Zoo African And Asian Elephants, Daniella Chusyd

All ETDs from UAB

African (Loxodonta africana) and Asian (Elephas maximus) elephant populations are rapidly declining due to poaching, and habitat fragmentation and loss. Due to the precarious situation elephants are facing worldwide, captive elephant populations are being viewed as an insurance policy against extinction. Unfortunately, captive elephant populations are not self-sustaining, in part because of reproductive and health issues. One hypothesis for the observed reproductive and health issues is zoo elephants are obese. The current method of assessing obesity in elephants is based on a qualitative visual tool, the body condition score, which does not quantify fat mass. The purpose of this dissertation …

Over 60 years ago, stone tools and remains of megafauna were discovered on the Southeast Asian islands of Flores, Sulawesi and Luzon, and a Middle Pleistocene colonization by Homo erectus was initially proposed to have occurred on these islands. However, until the discovery of Homo floresiensis in 2003, claims of the presence of archaic hominins on Wallacean islands were hypothetical owing to the absence of in situ fossils and/or stone artefacts that were excavated from well-documented stratigraphic contexts, or because secure numerical dating methods of these sites were lacking. As a consequence, these claims were generally treated with scepticism. Here …
