Purpose and background, including relevant citations: All pediatric residents are required to rotate through the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The NICU is a unique unit that provides care for premature and ill neonates. At Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHOR VCU), pediatric residents complete 12 weeks in the NICU, 4 weeks each year. As a part of this rotation, these residents are responsible for attending high risk deliveries. At birth about 10% of neonates will require resuscitation (1). Before starting residency, each resident is required to complete the neonatal resuscitation program (NRP). This certification requires renewal every two …

Assessing And Improving Pediatric Nurses' Documentation Of Childhood Immunization Status Using The Electronic Health Record, Katherine Engalichev
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Adherence to the standardized childhood immunization schedule put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics is the gold standard for decreasing vaccine-preventable disease morbidity. The first step to improving adherence with the recommended immunization schedule is identifying children who are under-immunized. The inpatient setting offers an opportunity to screen pediatric patients for immunization status. A survey was administered to nurses working on an inpatient pediatric unit to gauge nurse self-report of Cerner™ Electronic Health Record (EHR) use for immunization documentation, their perceptions regarding EHR ease of use for documenting pediatric immunization status, attitudes towards documenting immunization status, and perceived …

Background: Neonatal acute respiratory distress is a common cause for mortality and morbidity in preterm neonates. Non-invasive ventilation is crucial for preterm neonates, nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation and nasal continuous positive airway pressure. Recently, heated humidified high-flow nasal cannula modes have been revealed as more efficient non-invasive ventilation mode in improving functional residual capacity however, other studies have questioned its efficacy and safety in comparison to other non-invasive ventilation. Many studies have investigated the common predictive factors that are associated with intubation and failure of spontaneous breathing. Consequently, this study aimed at investigating the common factors associated with prolonged …

Sexually Transmitted Disease Awareness Amongst Adolescents 13 To 18 Years Of Age, Ngwanma Nwokoro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Sexually transmitted infections or diseases (STIs/STDs) acquired through sexual activities lead to compromised sexual health. The adolescent population is at high risk of acquiring STIs/STDs due to their lack of knowledge. The gap in practice was that the nurse practitioners (NPs) were deficient in standard of care; adolescent patients lacked consistent evaluation, education, or documentation of the education in their medical records. The practice-focused question focused on the evaluation of the effectiveness of a quality improvement (QI) initiative that incorporated the use of the American Association for Pediatrics screening and Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) treatment guidelines …

Ultrasonography Can Be Early Diagnostic Modality For Pediatric Calcaneus Fractures: A Case Report, Ying-Chu Chen, Szu-En Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Although calcaneus fractures may be the most common pediatric tarsal bone fracture, most occult calcaneus fractures are not visible on plain radiography, resulting in delayed diagnosis. However, ultrasonography can aid early diagnosis of this fracture with an unspecified mechanism of injury and unremarkable radiographic findings. In a pediatric patient with progressive ankle swelling and pain, initial plain radiography was unremarkable, and antibiotics were administered for suspected infective arthritis. After limping developed, ultrasonography showed symmetric growth plates of bilateral distal tibia, fibula, and tarsal bone; a step-off calcaneus cortex with periosteal reaction; increased power Doppler flow; and probe tenderness, indicating a …

Abstract
Background/Purpose
Conversations between care providers and patients are integral to medicine and are the most performed “procedure” (Luff et al., 2016). In Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Units (PCICUs), children of all ages with diverse diagnoses and needs are treated for critical illnesses and traumatic events. Therefore, providers frequently have difficult conversations with patients and their families. Pediatric critical care nurses are often invited to participate in these discussions. However, their role during, and after, these conversations is not always clear. The goal of this project was to evaluate the impact of an educational …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an acquired brain injury as a result of an external force to the head. Common causes for these injuries include falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports, and abuse. The affected location of the brain, severity, and age at the time of injury affect what deficits are present. Resulting deficits can be in speech, language, behavior, motor, and cognition/executive functions (Manasco, 2020). Traumatic brain injuries can affect all ages. No parent wants to experience their child going through this. TBIs do not just affect the patient but also loved ones. During this difficult time, parents or caregivers …

Using Family Focused-Care Solutions To Improve Child’S Quality Of Life, Joshua M. Del Sol
Nursing | Senior Theses
Chronic illness in children impacts not only themselves but their families too. Everyone in the family supports each other and provides each other with pretty much all our physiological needs including our emotional needs. Parents/caregivers are the role models for their young children and really shape the person they become because basic values and their early relationships are formed. A family provides that consistent balance in our life that is the center of our life at a young age. When children are diagnosed with a chronic illness, parents may feel responsible, ashamed, guilty, or angry. Families may turn on each …
