Problem: This quality improvement project aimed to increase nurse education about Lovenox

prophylaxis within the postpartum unit to reduce risks of pulmonary embolism among high-risk postpartum women in the postpartum unit. Context: A microsystem assessment was completed by Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) students in the postpartum unit at Hospital X located in the southern Bay Area. This unit accommodates 25 beds and provides care for postpartum mothers after both cesarean section and vaginal births. Intervention: An anonymous pre-intervention survey was distributed to the registered nurses on the unit. Educational handouts were created and distributed to the nurses on the unit. …

Refugee women from the Middle East are underrepresented in research and meeting their physical and mental health needs remains a significant challenge for healthcare workers in countries of resettlement. In this systematic research review, we synthesize family- centered interventions to address mental, menstrual, and reproductive health within this population. Twenty-one relevant studies were identified, showing the benefits of providing culturally sensitive family-centered education through the integration of educational interventions focused on community outreaches, interpersonal relations, school-based education, social networks, and more. PURPOSE: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that ultimately requires a power wheelchair (PWC) as the main source of mobility. The purpose of this project was to determine the effectiveness of an educational video to prepare a client for a PWC assessment by addressing four themes: PWC features, home environment, transportation, and client self-efficacy.

METHODS: An educational video was created and used in an ALS Multidisciplinary Clinic to better prepare clients for the PWC evaluation process. The effectiveness of this video was measured using a seven-question Likert scale survey focusing on the themes of the video. Individuals living …

Oral chemotherapy (OC) has been increasingly used in pediatric patients diagnosed with cancer, which is primarily managed in the outpatient setting. Different from adults, pediatric patients face unique challenges in administering these hazardous medications at home. Inadequate recognition and treatment of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) pose as a major liability to providers, as EPS can be life-threatening to patients, as they develop into metabolic syndrome, tardive dyskinesia (TD), or even death. Heart disease is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, excluding the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND: Most vascular events after stroke may be prevented by modifying vascular risk factors through medical and behavioral interventions. Stroke literacy-an understanding of stroke symptoms, risk factors, and treatment-likely contributes to vascular risk factor control and in turn stroke recurrence risk. Stroke literacy is the lowest among adults belonging to racial and ethnic minority populations in the United States. Background: This case study demonstrates how motivational interviewing (MI) may be used in the physical therapy management of a patient with persistent neck pain. Case Description: The patient was a 57-year-old female with activity limitations of walking >1 mile and riding her stationary bicycle. Motivational interview-based patient education was provided, focused on supporting self-efficacy with symptom self-management and exercise. Outcomes: The patient was discharged after 3 in-person visits and 2 additional follow-ups via secure email over 12 weeks. The Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire score was reduced by 33% and numeric pain rating scale decreased from 5/10 to 0/10 at rest. …

Each year in Vermont, approximately 75 people die from gunshot wounds and 65 are injured. The majority of these deaths are suicides, while the majority of injuries are caused by unintentional discharges (VDOH 2021).

This project aimed to build on a prior family medicine clerkship project which designed a pamphlet containing high-yield facts to help patients interpret common lab results. An Epic SmartPhrase was created from this information and made available for all users at Colchester Family Medicine. Fewer messages from patients inquiring about lab values would be expected to be routed to providers if this intervention were successful upon further evaluation. Future projects could create SmartPhrases which cover other frequently ordered tests, such as complete blood counts with differential, thryoid cascade, iron studies and urinalysis.

This goal of this project was to perform a community-level intervention by creating a pamphlet detailing first-line lifestyle modification and over-the-counter laxatives for the treatment of consitpation to be handed out at a primary care office in Newtown, CT.

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

This project examines ways to increase access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Plattsburgh, New York (located in Clinton County). After a review of the current literature on the subject and interviews with community members, an intervention was conducted at CVPH Family Medicine. EHR tools were generated and distributed to providers in the practice, with the goal of increasing the distribution of patient education materials about PrEP.
