Covid-19: Race For Vaccine, L. Hayley Burgess, Jason J. Braithwaite, Emily Singleton, Aaron M. Young, Mandelin K. Cooper

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

The world is in the midst of a pandemic from COVID-19, a disease caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2. Despite broad mitigation efforts, new cases continue with 74 million cases and 1.6 million deaths worldwide. Regardless of previous research efforts, there is no commercially available vaccine for any coronavirus. Novel vaccine development has historically taken at least 10 years from discovery to availability with only a 6% market entry probability.

With the global impact, there is an urgency to expedite a vaccine to protect the population. The U.S. government launched Operation Warp Speed with the goal to produce and deliver 300 …

Introduction

2009 H1N1 Pandemic: The historical 2009 H1N1 Influenza pandemic, which had a CDC estimated accrued disease burden of 100.5 million illnesses, 936,000 hospitalizations, and 75,000 deaths from 2009 to 2018, resulted in a declared state of emergency nationally, with ensuing diminished vaccine confidence and amplified fears of infection, prompting some to pursue flu vaccination, and others to forego. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend an annual flu vaccine for individuals 6 months of age and older as the “first and best” defense against influenza, a low percentage …

Preoperative Opioid Education: Total Knee And Total Hip Arthroplasty., Brittany Durbin Jul 2020

Preoperative Opioid Education: Total Knee And Total Hip Arthroplasty., Brittany Durbin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Opioids are commonly prescribed for the treatment of acute pain symptoms such as surgical pain. The United States is struggling to deal with abuse, misuse, and accidental death associated with prescription opioids. Lack of knowledge regarding safe opioid use is partly to blame for this crisis. The purpose of this evidence-based quality improvement project is to implement a dual-modality (written and spoken) opioid educational intervention to both health care providers and patients. Intended outcomes include increased opioid knowledge for providers yielding more effective opioid education to patients. A pre- and post-test design was used to evaluate provider knowledge and intent …

Pandemics: A Covid-19 Perspective, Lyn Bowen

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

The world is currently gripped by a pandemic, a term that is on everyone’s lips. However, six months ago, many would have found it difficult to define the terms pandemic, epidemic and outbreak, or explain the difference.

The emergence of a novel coronavirus, commonly referred to as COVID-19, has significantly changed our awareness. It has heightened our anxiety, like a primordial fear, leaving us feeling vulnerable, similar to how past generations reacted to pandemics.
