Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important indicator of long-term well-being, influenced by environmental factors such as family, culture, societal norms and available resources. This study aimed to explore parental perspectives on the influence of socio-cultural factors and environmental resources on the HRQOL of children and adolescents after congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery.
Methods: Using a descriptive, qualitative design, semi-structured interviews of children/adolescents who had CHD surgery in this low-middle income country (LMIC) were collected between July to December 2017. There were 20 families enrolled, which included 18 parent dyads (mother and father) and two single mothers, …

Complications And Management In Pediatric Heart Surgery, Hannah Berndt
Complications And Management In Pediatric Heart Surgery, Hannah Berndt
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this literature review is to evaluate current research surrounding management of pediatric patients after cardiac surgery. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and neurodevelopmental deficits are the main discussion topics. This review analyzes the causes, risk factors, and effects of AKI. The diagnostic and management methods surrounding AKI are compared, and diagnostic approaches such as serum Cystatin C and fibroblast growth factor 23 are analyzed as potential future replacements to serum creatinine. The modality of renal replacement therapy is evaluated, and early initiation of peritoneal dialysis is preferred. This review discusses the most common causes, effects, and management of …
Successful Completion Of Pregnancy After Mustard Procedure For Transposition Of Great Arteries: A Rare Case From The Developing World, Muhammad Kamran Younis Memon, Ayesha Malik, Saleem Akhtar
Successful Completion Of Pregnancy After Mustard Procedure For Transposition Of Great Arteries: A Rare Case From The Developing World, Muhammad Kamran Younis Memon, Ayesha Malik, Saleem Akhtar
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Surgical repair of transposition of great arteries has undergone various evolutionary changes over the years. The initial of these treatment options was atrial septectomy followed by atrial switch and the current preferred treatment option is arterial switch operation worldwide. Due to various reasons, like lack of medical and surgical expertise atrial switch operation was commonly in practice in developing countries until few years back. Pregnancy in a patient with history of atrial switch operation poses a unique haemodynamic challenge. We report the case of a successful pregnancy in a 26 years old lady who had undergone Mustard repair surgery in …

Challenges Of Pediatric Disease In Adulthood, Dennis J. Baumgardner, Brian Chicoine
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Some chronic diseases — such as the rare bone disease X-linked hypophosphatemia, the impetus for a study reported within Volume 7, Issue 2 of the Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews — are diagnosed in childhood but become more symptomatic in adulthood. In this editorial, the challenges, pitfalls, and opportunities regarding the care of adults with childhood-onset chronic diseases are examined using Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis, congenital heart disease, and Hirschsprung disease as examples.

N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide As A Biomarker For Differentiating Cardiac And Pulmonary Disease In Term Neonates With Respiratory Distress, Azza M. Ahmed, Nagwa Abd El-Ghffar Mohamed, Enas M. Abdelhamid, Randa I. Taha, Maha M.A. Abo-Hashish
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objective: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is synthesized in the cardiac ventricles and released in response to volume or pressure load. The aim of the study was to determine whether plasma level of N-terminal pro BNP (NT-pro BNP) can distinguish between cardiac and pulmonary disease (PD) among neonates with respiratory distress (RD). Patients and methods: The study included 48 term neonates in the first month of life with signs of RD. They were recruited from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Al-Galaa Teaching Hospital. Twenty-six healthy neonates were included as a control group. The degree of RD was assessed using SilvermaneAnderson score. …

Study Of Serum Leptin Level In Children With Cyanotic And Acyanotic Congenital Heart Disease, Ahmed A. Khatab, Fahima M. Hassan, Mona S. Habib, Rania S. El-Zayat, Rania S.H. Ali
Menoufia Medical Journal
Objective The aim of this study was to measure serum leptin levels in children with cyanotic and acyanotic congenital heart disease and to examine its possible role in growth in these children. Background Leptin has been shown to be an integral component of energy homeostasis and regulation of body weight. Leptin regulates adipose tissue mass and correlates with the fat mass. Research on the physiological function of leptin has primarily focused on its role in the pathogenesis of obesity. Children with congenital heart disease are at increased risk for poor growth. Several factors may play a role in poor growth, …
Pilot Study: Educational Tool Reduces Parental Stress At Home Post Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Rachel Barsella
Pilot Study: Educational Tool Reduces Parental Stress At Home Post Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Rachel Barsella
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Congenital heart disease is a prevalent health issue in patients around the world. Approximately 8 in 1,000 live births are complicated by congenital heart disease (Ndile & Kohi, 2011). Increased levels of stress and anxiety have been reported by parents of children with congenital heart disease throughout the process of cardiac surgery, hospitalization, and especially discharge home (Brown & Smith, 2018). This pilot research study utilized pre-intervention and post-intervention survey methodology to examine the impact of an educational tool on parental stress while caring for their child at home post cardiac surgery. The educational tool created by the researcher was …

Background Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental deficits, and the presence of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) may further lead to poor language skills acquisition and speech delays. Prevalence of SNHL in the general pediatric population is estimated to be 0.2% at birth to 0.35% during adolescence. Very few studies have attempted to estimate SNHL prevalence in children who have undergone congenital heart surgery. Methods This retrospective study aimed to estimate SNHL prevalence in children who underwent congenital heart surgery in our institution and were followed up in our high-risk pediatric cardiology clinics for four …

Williams syndrome (WS) is an arteriopathic derangement associated with supravalvular aortic stenosis and branch pulmonary stenosis. We describe double-outlet right ventricle with mitral atresia and aortic arch hypoplasia in an infant with WS. This case demonstrates the difficulty in managing patients with WS with complex cardiac defects. To our knowledge, this is the first reported single-ventricle physiology in a patient with WS. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).
