Serum Adiponectin Level In Osteoporotic Postmenopausal Women With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Mohammed A. Shaaban, Mohammed G. Habsh, Rasha G. Mostafa, Shimaa K. Zewain

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim was to evaluate the relationships between serum adiponectin level and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) in osteoporotic postmenopausal women with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus. Background Adiponectin is a novel adipocytokine that could influence bone metabolism. Patients and methods This case–control study was conducted on 55 postmenopausal women selected from diabetic endocrinology inpatient and outpatient clinics. Patients were divided into three groups: osteoporotic group (group A), which included 20 nondiabetic osteoporotic postmenopausal women; diabetic osteoporotic group (group B), which included 20 type 2 diabetic osteoporotic postmenopausal women; and control group (group C), which included 15 nonosteoporotic, …

Beyond The Brain: A Study Of Α-Synuclein's Role In Bone And Adipose Tissue, Carolina A. Figueroa Aug 2020

Beyond The Brain: A Study Of Α-Synuclein's Role In Bone And Adipose Tissue, Carolina A. Figueroa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

α-Synuclein is a polypeptide encoded by the Snca gene, highly expressed in neurons, but it is also found in bones and adipose tissue. Co-expression analysis showed that Snca regulates skeletal homeostasis, and its deletion reduced estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss and weight gain. It is a major component of Lewy bodies (LB) in Parkinson’s disease (PD), leading to progressive immobilization and a range of nonmotor symptoms, including osteopenia, body composition alterations and insulin resistance. This thesis aimed to determine α-Synuclein’s intrinsic role in bone and adipose homeostasis. We discussed the PD pathophysiology emphasizing aspects of bone health and metabolism. By using …

Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry Has Limited Utility In Detecting Bone Pathology In Children With Hypophosphatasia: A Pooled Post Hoc Analysis Of Asfotase Alfa Clinical Trial Data., Jill H. Simmons, Eric T. Rush, Anna Petryk, Shanggen Zhou, Gabriel Á. Martos-Moreno Aug 2020

Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry Has Limited Utility In Detecting Bone Pathology In Children With Hypophosphatasia: A Pooled Post Hoc Analysis Of Asfotase Alfa Clinical Trial Data., Jill H. Simmons, Eric T. Rush, Anna Petryk, Shanggen Zhou, Gabriel Á. Martos-Moreno

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Asfotase alfa is an enzyme replacement therapy approved for treatment of patients with pediatric-onset hypophosphatasia (HPP), a rare, inherited, systemic disease causing impaired skeletal mineralization, short stature, and reduced physical function in children. The role of dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in the assessment of children with HPP has been insufficiently explored. This post hoc analysis included pooled DXA data from 2 open-label, multicenter studies in 19 children with HPP. The study population was aged ≥5 to≤6.6 years at enrollment (male: 79%; median age at enrollment: 10.4 y [range: 5.9-16.7]; treatment duration: 6.3 y [range: 0.1-6.6]. Baseline height Z-scores indicated short …

Diagnostic Efficacy Of Routine Contrast-Enhanced Abdominal Ct For The Assessment Of Osteoporosis In The Turkish Population, Ayşegül Cansu, Di̇lara Atasoy, İlker Eyüboğlu, Murat Karkucak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of vertebral Hounsfield unit (HU) values on routine contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans for the assessment of osteoporosis using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) T-scores as a reference standard.Materials and methods: A total of 111 consecutive patients who underwent contrast-enhanced abdominal CT examination for any indication and DXA within a 6-month period were retrospectively analyzed. The CT attenuation values of trabecular bone in HUs were measured in axial and sagittal planes from lumbar vertebrae 1-4 (L1-L4). The correlation between the DXA T-scores and HU values measured on the CT scans was …

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Ss1-Selective Beta-Blockers On Bone Mineral Density And Fracture Risk In Postmenopausal Women, Betül Yavuz Keleş, Meltem Vural, Burcu Önder, Kadri̇ye Öneş Jan 2020

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Ss1-Selective Beta-Blockers On Bone Mineral Density And Fracture Risk In Postmenopausal Women, Betül Yavuz Keleş, Meltem Vural, Burcu Önder, Kadri̇ye Öneş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: ß1-selective beta-blockers (BBs) are sympatholytic agents, and discerning their effects on bone health would be of great importance. This study aimed to investigate the influence of ß1-selective BBs on bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk. Materials and methods: This study included postmenopausal women who used ß1-selective BBs (BB group) and control group. Sociodemographic characteristics, BMD and previous fragility fractures were recorded. Additionally, the 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic and hip fracture was calculated using the fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX). Results: A total of 60 participants were included in the study. L1-4 and L2-4 BMD values were …

Neuropeptide Y1 Receptor Antagonist But Not Neuropeptide Y Itself Increased Bone Mineral Density When Locally Injected With Hyaluronic Acid In Male Wistar Rats, Muhammer Özgür Çevi̇k, Petek Korkusuz, Feza Korkusuz Jan 2020

Neuropeptide Y1 Receptor Antagonist But Not Neuropeptide Y Itself Increased Bone Mineral Density When Locally Injected With Hyaluronic Acid In Male Wistar Rats, Muhammer Özgür Çevi̇k, Petek Korkusuz, Feza Korkusuz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The nervous system controls bone mass via both the central (CNS) and the peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. Intriguingly, neuropeptide Y (NPY) signaling occurs in both. Less is known on how the PNS stimulated NPY signaling controls bone metabolism. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether NPY or NPY1 receptor antagonist changes local bone mineral density (BMD) when injected into a Wistar rat tibia. Materials and methods: Tibial intramedullary area of 24 wild type male Wistar rats (average weight = 350 ± 50 g, average age = 4 ± 0.5 months) were injected with NPY (1 × 10-5 …
