In the Wuhan Province of China, in December 2019, the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a severe involvement of the lower respiratory tract leading to an acute respiratory syndrome. Subsequently, coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) provoked a pandemic which is considered a life-threatening disease. The SARS-CoV-2, a family member of betacoronaviruses, possesses singlestranded positive-sense RNA with typical structural proteins, involving the envelope, membrane, nucleocapsid and spike proteins that are responsible for the viral infectivity, and nonstructural proteins. The effectual host immune response including innate and adaptive immunity against SARS-Cov-2 seems crucial to control and resolve the viral infection. However, the severity …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD), is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition, which may involve multiple organs and mostly presents with high serum IgG4 levels and specific histopathological characteristics. As IgG4-RD is a relatively new entity the etiology, prevalence and epidemiologic knowledge is quite limited. Although involvement of almost all anatomical regions has been reported, the most commonly affected regions are pancreas, lacrimal glands, salivary glands, retroperitoneum, orbita, lymph nodes, kidney and lungs. Diagnosis is made with combined evaluation of clinical, radiological and histopathological findings. Typical histopathological features include storiform fibrosis, dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates and obliterative phlebitis. Its course is typically marked …

Background/aim: The male sling operation and artificial urinary sphincter implantation are common methods for treating urinary incontinence. However, there are some drawbacks to these methods such as infection, urethral erosion, pain, inefficiency, and the technical difficulty of the operations. Here we describe a new device we have named the Turkish Continence Device (TCD) which has advantages over these other methods. The aim of this study was perform experiments with the TCD prototype in vivo and ex vivo to determine efficiency, convenience of implantation, and negative effects.Materials and methods: We implanted the prototype device in male goats and sheep, compressing the …

Background/aim: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a rare, benign inflammatory disease of breast. There is no general agreement on the appropriate treatment choice. The aim of the study was to investigate the immunosuppressive administer for idiopathic granulomatous mastitis and risk factors related with disease recurrence.Materials and methods: The data of 53 patients with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis were evaluated for this cross-sectional retrospective study. Demographic features and clinical characteristics and course of the patients were obtained from file records. Results: The mean age of the patients was 37.2 ± 6.6 years. Fifty-one of 53 patients received immunosuppressive treatment with or without surgery. Forty-seven …

Liver surgery is one of the most complex surgical interventions with high risk and potential for complications. Posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) is a serious complication of liver surgery that occurs in about 10% of patients undergoing major liver surgery. It is the main source of morbidity and mortality. Appropriate surgical techniques and intensive care management are important in preventing PHLF. Early start of the liver support systems is very important for the PHLF patient to recover, survive, or be ready for a liver transplant. Nonbiological and biological liver support systems should be used in PHLF to prepare for treatment or …
Familial Mediterranean Fever, From Pathogenesis To Treatment: A Contemporary Review, Abdurrahman Tufan, Helen Lachmann
Familial Mediterranean Fever, From Pathogenesis To Treatment: A Contemporary Review, Abdurrahman Tufan, Helen Lachmann
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) (OMIM #249100) is the most common hereditary autoinflammatory disease in the world. FMF is caused by gain of function mutations of MEFV gene which encodes an immune regulatory protein, pyrin. Over the last few years, we have witnessed several new developments in the pathogenesis, genetic testing, diagnosis, comorbidities, disease related damage and treatment approaches to FMF. Elucidation of some of the pathogenic mechanisms has led to the discovery of pathways involved in inflammatory, metabolic, cardiovascular and degenerative diseases. The use of next generation sequencing in FMF has revealed many new gene variants whose clinical significance may …
