Thiol/Disulphide Homeostasis In Intensive Care Unit Patients With Sepsis And Septic Shock, Hami̇t Yildiz Jan 2020

Thiol/Disulphide Homeostasis In Intensive Care Unit Patients With Sepsis And Septic Shock, Hami̇t Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Sepsis is a condition caused by infection followed by unregulated inflammatory response which may lead to organ dysfunction. The aim of this study is to be the first in the literature and it has been designed to show the thiol/disulphide changes in patients with sepsis and septic shock and their correlation with acute phase reactants. Material and methods: A total of 113 patients (septic shock 53 and sepsis 60) and 60 healthy control subjects have been enrolled in this study from the period February 2018 to 2019. The patients were divided in 2 groups: nonsurvivors (74) and survivors (39). …

Stress Response Related To Ultrasonographic Examination In Dogs, Cenker Çağri Cingi, Abdurrahman Fati̇h Fi̇dan, Durmuş Fati̇h Başer, Mehmet Uçar, Zülfükar Kadi̇r Saritaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study investigated whether abdominal ultrasonography, a frequently used examination method in clinics and hospitals, causes stress in dogs. For the study, 10 healthy dogs were used. Following general examination, intravenous catheters were placed in the V. cephalica accecorius of the dogs and blood specimens were collected to obtain serum and plasma samples (minute 0). After a 30- min break, ultrasonography was applied following shaving of the abdominal region. Serum and plasma samples were collected from the intravenous catheters at the 5th, 15th, and 20th minutes of the ultrasonographic examination during which the urinary bladder, left kidney, spleen, stomach, liver, …

Thiol/Disulfide Homeostasis And Ischemia Modified Albumin Levels In Autoimmune Gastritis And Their Relations With Gastric Emptying, Emra Asfuroğlu Kalkan, Serap Boz, Özcan Erel, Sali̇m Neşeli̇oğlu, Çağdaş Kalkan, Ari̇f İrfan Soykan Jan 2020

Thiol/Disulfide Homeostasis And Ischemia Modified Albumin Levels In Autoimmune Gastritis And Their Relations With Gastric Emptying, Emra Asfuroğlu Kalkan, Serap Boz, Özcan Erel, Sali̇m Neşeli̇oğlu, Çağdaş Kalkan, Ari̇f İrfan Soykan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Autoimmune gastritis is an autoimmune and inflammatory disorder. The aim of this study is to examine dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis and ischemia modified albumin levels, and to analyze the association between thiol/disulfide homeostasis and gastric emptying time in autoimmune gastritis. Materials and methods: Thiol/disulfide homeostasis tests and ischemia modified albumin levels were determined in 50 autoimmune gastritis patients and 53 healthy subjects. Patients with delayed and normal gastric emptying were compared by thiol/disulfide homeostasis tests. Results: The results showed that native thiol (μmol/L), total thiol (μmol/L), and native thiol/total thiol ratio (%) of the patients with autoimmune gastritis decreased compared …

Oxidative Stress In Calves With Enzootic Pneumonia, Mustafa Özbek, Cumali̇ Özkan Jan 2020

Oxidative Stress In Calves With Enzootic Pneumonia, Mustafa Özbek, Cumali̇ Özkan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was performed to evaluate the oxidative stress in calves with enzootic pneumonia. Ninety calves that were 2?6 months old were used in this study. Ten of these calves were healthy and used as the control group, while 80 were diagnosed with enzootic pneumonia according to the clinical examinations. The biochemical results showed that total oxidant status (TOS), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and sialic acid (SA) levels were higher in calves with enzootic pneumonia than in the control group. While there was a statistically significant increase in TOS, MDA, and SA concentrations, there was not any statistically significant …

Oxidative Stress Parameters In Patients With Ascending Aortic Dilatation, Mehmet Erdoğan, Meli̇ke Polat, Muhammet Ci̇hat Çeli̇k, Selçuk Öztürk, Serdal Baştuğ, Yunus Emre Özbebek, Sali̇m Neşeli̇oğlu, Murat Akçay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study aimedto determine plasma thiol, disulphide, and serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels and ferroxidase activity in patients with ascending aorta dilatation (AAD) in comparison to those without AAD and to evaluate the predictive value of these oxidative stress parameters for AAD.Materials and methods: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study of 184 patients who applied to our cardiology clinic. Our study population consisted of patients with AAD (n = 85) and without AAD (n = 99). A spectrophotometric method was used to determine plasma thiol, disulphide, and serum IMA levels and ferroxidase activity. Results: The native thiol and …

Anakinra, An Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, Increases The Morphine Analgesic Effectand Decreases Morphine Tolerance Development By Modulating Oxidative Stress Andendoplasmic Reticulum Stress In Rats, Onur Avci, Ahmet Şevki̇ Taşkiran Jan 2020

Anakinra, An Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, Increases The Morphine Analgesic Effectand Decreases Morphine Tolerance Development By Modulating Oxidative Stress Andendoplasmic Reticulum Stress In Rats, Onur Avci, Ahmet Şevki̇ Taşkiran

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Recent studies have shown that inflammation plays a role in morphine analgesia and tolerance development. Anakinra is a competitive inhibitor of IL-1 receptors and an antiinflammatory protein regulating IL-1ß's biological activity by avoiding signal transduction. In this study, we aimed to examine the effects of anakinra on morphine analgesia and tolerance. Materials and methods: In this study, 36 Wistar Albino (230-250 g) male rats were used. Animals were divided into 6 groups: saline (S), 100 mg/kg anakinra (A), 5mg/kg morphine (M), M+A, morphine tolerance (MT), and MT+A. The resulting analgesic effect was measured with hot plate and tail-flick analgesia …

Melatonin, Aging, And Covid-19: Could Melatonin Be Beneficial For Covid-19 Treatment In The Elderly?, Güler Öztürk, Kazi̇me Gonca Akbulut, Şevi̇n Güney Jan 2020

Melatonin, Aging, And Covid-19: Could Melatonin Be Beneficial For Covid-19 Treatment In The Elderly?, Güler Öztürk, Kazi̇me Gonca Akbulut, Şevi̇n Güney

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this review is to summarize current studies on the relationship between melatonin and aging. Nowadays, age-related diseases come into prominence, and identifying age-related changes and developing proper therapeutic approaches are counted as some of the major issues regarding community health. Melatonin is the main hormone of the pineal gland. Melatonin is known to influence many biological processes in the body, including circadian rhythms, the immune system, and neuroendocrine and cardiovascular functions. Melatonin rhythms also reflect the biological process of aging. Aging is an extremely complex and multifactorial process. Melatonin levels decline considerably with aging and its decline …
