Association Between Monocyte To High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio And Bicuspid Aortic Valve Degeneration, Bi̇lge Duran Karaduman, Hüseyi̇n Ayhan, Telat Keleş, Engi̇n Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: From a pathophysiological point of view, inflammation is thought to be more dominant in bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis than tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) stenosis. Our study aimed to determine the association between monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (MHR), a new inflammatory marker, and the speed of progression of stenosis and pathophysiology of BAV stenosis.Materials and methods: A total of 210 severe aortic stenosis patients (70 consecutive BAV patients, 140 matched TAV patients) were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Clinical and echocardiographic data and laboratory results related to our research were collected retrospectively from the patients' records. …

Background/aim: It is claimed that aberrant immune response has a more important role than the cytopathic effect of the virus in the morbidity and mortality of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We aimed to investigate the possible roles of tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK)/Fn14 pathway and leukotrienes (LT) in uncontrolled immune response that occurs in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Materials and methods: This study included 25 asymptomatic patients and 35 patients with lung involvement who were diagnosed with COVID-19 as well as 22 healthy volunteers. Lung involvement was determined using computed-tomography. Serum TWEAK, LTE4, …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Mango ginger (MG: curcuma amada) has antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. The aim was to evaluate the antiarthritic potential efficacy of MG on collagen-induced arthritis. Materials and methods: Twenty-one female Wistar-albino rats were divided into three groups. Arthritis was induced by intradermal injections of type II collagen and Freund's adjuvant. MG extract was orally administered starting from the first collagen injection. TNF-α, IL-6, IL-17, obestatin, sclerostin, and DKK-1 serum levels were determined, and perisynovial inflammation and cartilage-bone destruction in the paws were histologically evaluated. Moreover, joint tissue TNF-α, IL-17, NF-κB, and COX-2 levels were analyzed. Results: TNF-α, IL-17, IL-6, and …

In the Wuhan Province of China, in December 2019, the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a severe involvement of the lower respiratory tract leading to an acute respiratory syndrome. Subsequently, coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) provoked a pandemic which is considered a life-threatening disease. The SARS-CoV-2, a family member of betacoronaviruses, possesses singlestranded positive-sense RNA with typical structural proteins, involving the envelope, membrane, nucleocapsid and spike proteins that are responsible for the viral infectivity, and nonstructural proteins. The effectual host immune response including innate and adaptive immunity against SARS-Cov-2 seems crucial to control and resolve the viral infection. However, the severity …

Midkine Level May Be Used As A Noninvasive Biomarker In Crohn's Disease, Murat Keki̇lli̇, Alpaslan Tanoğlu, Fati̇h Karaahmet, Zeynal Doğan, Murat Can, Abdurrahi̇m Sayilir, Başak Çakal, Tolga Düzenli̇, Yavuz Beyazi̇t Jan 2020

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Crohn's disease (CD) is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease. Midkine (MDK) is an endogenous inflammatory marker. We aimed to investigate the relationship between MDK levels and inflammation and hence determine whether MDK can be used as a noninvasive biomarker in active CD. Materials and methods: Sixty-five consecutive patients over the age of 18 with CD and 36 healthy controls were included in this study. CD patients' venous blood samples were taken before treatment. Serum MDK levels were determined in human plasma samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Results: The mean age of the study patients was 44.8 …

Relationship Between Malnutrition And Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction In Patientswith Nonischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Şeref Kul, Tolga Si̇nan Güvenç, Mustafa Çalişkan Jan 2020

Relationship Between Malnutrition And Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction In Patientswith Nonischemic Dilated Cardiomyopathy, Şeref Kul, Tolga Si̇nan Güvenç, Mustafa Çalişkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/ aim: Malnutrition is common in patients with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), especially in the end stages of the disease where heart failure symptoms predominate. Malnutrition has been associated with atherosclerosis in patients with chronic kidney disease, but it is unknown whether a similar relationship exists between malnutrition and coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). In the present study, we aimed to analyse whether indices of malnutrition were associated with coronary flow reserve (CFR) in patients with DCM. Materials and methods: A total of 33 cases who were prospectively followed up with by institutional DCM registry were found eligible for inclusion. Coronary …

The Effect Of Long-Term Systemic Immunosuppressive Drug Use On Druse Formation: A Newperspective To Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Özkan Sever, Ridvan Mercan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To evaluate the effect of the long-term use of systemic immunosuppressive drugs on druse formation in patients aged over 50 years. Materials and methods: The current retrospective cohort study includes 420 eyes of 420 patients. 210 eyes of 210 patients who used immunosuppressive drugs (Group 1) at least for the last 5 years and 210 eyes of 210 control patients (Group 2) who did not use any drugs were compared. All patients were older than 50 years and selected among patients who were followed by rheumatology and ophthalmology clinic at a tertiary university hospital. All patients had complete ophthalmic …
