Igg4-Related Disease: A Contemporary Review, Hazan Karadeni̇z, Augusto Vaglio Jan 2020

Igg4-Related Disease: A Contemporary Review, Hazan Karadeni̇z, Augusto Vaglio

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD), is an immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition, which may involve multiple organs and mostly presents with high serum IgG4 levels and specific histopathological characteristics. As IgG4-RD is a relatively new entity the etiology, prevalence and epidemiologic knowledge is quite limited. Although involvement of almost all anatomical regions has been reported, the most commonly affected regions are pancreas, lacrimal glands, salivary glands, retroperitoneum, orbita, lymph nodes, kidney and lungs. Diagnosis is made with combined evaluation of clinical, radiological and histopathological findings. Typical histopathological features include storiform fibrosis, dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates and obliterative phlebitis. Its course is typically marked …

Cytomorphological Findings In Diagnosis Of Warthin Tumor, Fatma Fulya Köybaşioğlu, Bi̇nnur Önal, Ünsal Han, Ayşegül Adabağ, Ahmet Şahpaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To define the cytomorphologic findings leading to difficulties in diagnosis of Warthin tumors (WTs).Materials and methods: Forty-eight histopathologically diagnosed WT patients who had fine needle aspiration cytology preoperatively were reevaluated for defining the presence or absence of lymphocytes, oncocytic cell layer, oncocytic cell papillae, granular debris background, mucoid background, macrophages, polymorphonuclear cells, mast cells, squamous-like cells, atypical vacuolated cytoplasmic cells, and giant cells. Results: Forty-seven tumors were in the parotid gland and one in the submandibular gland. There were 37 (77%) male and 11 (23%) female patients. Cytopathologically in 36 patients the diagnosis was benign neoplasm (WT); in 6, other …

Surgical Management Of Insulinomas At The Azerbaijan Medical University: A Retrospective Study Of 21 Cases Over A 10-Year Period, Rovshan Hasanov, Elgun Samadov, Nuru Bayramov, Ayteki̇n Ünlü, Patrizio Petrone Jan 2020

Surgical Management Of Insulinomas At The Azerbaijan Medical University: A Retrospective Study Of 21 Cases Over A 10-Year Period, Rovshan Hasanov, Elgun Samadov, Nuru Bayramov, Ayteki̇n Ünlü, Patrizio Petrone

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study represents the first report that evaluates the experience gathered from diagnosis, surgical treatment and outcome of insulinoma patients from Azerbaijan.Materials and methods: We retrospectively review of insulinoma patients for a 10-year period. Collected data included patient demographics, laboratory and imaging tests, detailed surgical reports, histopathological examination of resected specimens, and clinical follow-up.Results: Twenty-one insulinoma patients were identified. Male patients comprised 52.4%; mean age was 44 years. Mean time to diagnosis was 14 months; 61% patients had ≥3 medical referrals due to hypoglycemia-related symptoms. Diagnosis sensitivity of CT, MRI and US was 85%, 80%, and 55%, respectively. The …

Chest Ct Features Of The Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Furkan Ufuk, Recep Savaş Jan 2020

Chest Ct Features Of The Novel Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), Furkan Ufuk, Recep Savaş

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A new type of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is rapidly spreading worldwide and causes pneumonia, respiratory distress, thromboembolic events, and death. Chest computed tomography (CT) plays an essential role in the diagnosis of viral pneumonia, monitoring disease progression, determination of disease severity, and evaluating therapeutic efficacy. Chest CT can show important clues of 2019-nCoV disease (also known as COVID-19) in patients with an appropriate clinic. Prompt diagnosis of COVID-19 is essential to prevent disease transmission and provides close clinical observation of patients with clinically severe disease. Therefore, radiologists and clinicians should be familiar with the CT imaging findings of COVID-19 pneumonia. Herein, …

Familial Mediterranean Fever, From Pathogenesis To Treatment: A Contemporary Review, Abdurrahman Tufan, Helen Lachmann Jan 2020

Familial Mediterranean Fever, From Pathogenesis To Treatment: A Contemporary Review, Abdurrahman Tufan, Helen Lachmann

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) (OMIM #249100) is the most common hereditary autoinflammatory disease in the world. FMF is caused by gain of function mutations of MEFV gene which encodes an immune regulatory protein, pyrin. Over the last few years, we have witnessed several new developments in the pathogenesis, genetic testing, diagnosis, comorbidities, disease related damage and treatment approaches to FMF. Elucidation of some of the pathogenic mechanisms has led to the discovery of pathways involved in inflammatory, metabolic, cardiovascular and degenerative diseases. The use of next generation sequencing in FMF has revealed many new gene variants whose clinical significance may …
