Entrapment Of A Partially Degloved Stent In The Radial Artery: Is There Any Way Out?, Nooraldaem Yousif, Husam A. Noor

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Stent loss during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is uncommon but may lead to serious adverse events. Here we describe a challenging case of stent loss in the radial artery during primary PCI. There, a long stent failed to cross the culprit lesion, and an attempt to pull back the undeployed stent into the guiding catheter resulted in eversion of the stent, partially stripping it off the stent balloon and rendering the stent irretrievable. Retrieval of the stent at all costs might have led to major complications; hence stent deployment in the radial artery bailed us out of this precarious situation.

Pharmaceutical drugs targeting dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) may increase the risk of fatty liver disease and other metabolic disorders. To identify potential novel CVD drug targets without these adverse effects, we perform genome-wide analyses of participants in the HUNT Study in Norway (n = 69,479) to search for protein-altering variants with beneficial impact on quantitative blood traits related to cardiovascular disease, but without detrimental impact on liver function. We identify 76 (11 previously unreported) presumed causal protein-altering variants associated with one or more CVD- or liver-related blood traits. Nine of the variants are predicted to result in loss-of-function of …

We sought to identify pre-, peri-, and post-arrest variables associated with in-hospital mortality amongst survivors of an in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients ≥18 years of age who were resuscitated from an in-hospital arrest at our University Medical Center from January 1, 2013 to September 31, 2016. In-hospital mortality was chosen as a primary outcome and unfavorable discharge …

A Standardized Unit Based Process For Obtaining Heart Failure Patient Weights, Lesli E. Teed Dec 2020

A Standardized Unit Based Process For Obtaining Heart Failure Patient Weights, Lesli E. Teed

Master's Projects

Introduction: A CNL student-led process improvement process improvement project was proposed to help improve the accuracy of Heart Failure patient weights on a geriatric specialty unit. Cardiology voiced a preference for patients to be weighed using electronic standing scales rather than in-bed scales to improve accuracy. A literature review revealed that in-bed scale weights were less accurate due to inconsistencies in zeroing the bed prior to obtaining the weight, not removing excess patient care equipment and bed linens, and not ensuring that the patient was wearing a minimal amount of clothing.

Methods: Electronic standing scales were purchased, current practice state …

Nursing | Senior Theses

As a future medical professional in the healthcare field, we continue to see patients admitted for cardiovascular issues. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality among adults living in the U.S. despite advances in treatment throughout the past century. A number of risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity contribute to the significant rise of cardiovascular disease. Research data suggests that there is correlation between cardiovascular disease, low socioeconomic status, and diet. According to the American Phycological Association socioeconomic status is measured by income, educational status, and occupation, and has been shown to be closely …

Meta-Analysis Of The Association Between Acute Particulate Matter Exposure And Cardiovascular Disease, Issa El-Kildani

Masters Theses

Cardiovascular disease, which involves a wide range of conditions, including narrowed or blocked coronary arteries, has remained the leading cause of death in the United States for over 50 years. The majority of cardiovascular conditions are preventable, which can be identified through risk factors. However, maintaining healthy life choices can be difficult for most Americans, as the vast majority live in populated urban cities. Urban life can pose hazardous conditions to individuals, especially air pollution. Air pollution includes gaseous pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone and sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. Of these pollutants, particulate matter has become …

A Review Of Bleeding Risk With Impella-Supported High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, George W. Vetrovec, Amir Kaki, Thom G. Dahle

Articles

Complex, high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HR-PCI) is increasingly being performed, often with mechanical circulatory support (MCS), though to date, there are limited randomised data on the efficacy of MCS for HR-PCI. The majority of MCS is provided by intra-aortic balloon pumps, but increasingly Impella® (Abiomed, Danvers, MA, USA) heart pumps are being used. While the Impella pumps provide greater increases in cardiac output, these devices require large bore access, which has been associated with an increased risk of bleeding and vascular complications. Decisions regarding the use of Impella are often based on risk–benefit considerations, with Impella-related bleeding risk being a …

An Exploratory On Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (Papvr), Gabriella Pitingaro Dec 2020

An Exploratory On Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (Papvr), Gabriella Pitingaro

Honors Projects

This exploratory gives insight into Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (PAPVR). The paper goes into depth explaining more detail about the congenital heart defect, the embryology surrounding it, and how much is still left to be discovered. With PAPVR's rarity (0.4-0.7% of the population), not much is known. Hypocritically, since PAPVR often goes undetected, our numbers for cases are estimated to be an underestimated value. The paper also goes into a specific case study regarding the celebrity Amy Grant and her experience with PAPVR and how it has affected her life and career.

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

In-hospital cardiac or pulmonary arrest is associated with high mortality. In the USA, approximately 200,000 of these events occur and are associated with overall survival rates of 18%-20%. Despite advances in resuscitative methods, the probability of intact survival also remains unfavorable. Though many factors play a role, we believe a large portion of a patient's survival is dependent on the competency of the leader of the code blue or resuscitative team's efforts. Newly minted physicians who enter medical training in their respective residencies are equipped with a wide range of clinical competency in regards to hands-on experience and aptitude with …

Section of Cardiology

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that involves multiple organ systems. Cardiovascular involvement in SLE is well described in the literature. Cardiac arrhythmias associated with SLE include sinus tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, and atrial ectopy or atrial tachycardia. In this report, we present the case of a patient with SLE who was found to have focal atrial tachycardia that mimicked sinus tachycardia on a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). She was inappropriately treated as a case of sinus tachycardia initially. But she did not respond to the treatment and developed tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy despite being on antiarrhythmic medications. She subsequently underwent successful …
