Objective: Student football managers have demands on their time that may pose barriers Received 5 April 2018 to meeting recommended current physical activity (PA) guidelines. The study sought to assess the amount of PA obtained by student football managers at a NCAA Division I Football university. Participants: Subjects were student football managers (n¼14) with data collected in the fall 2015. Methods: Participants wore an Omron HJ-720ITFFP pedometer for seven consecutive days during football activities only, while self-reporting their overall PA on day 7. Football related concussions are a growing concern in society. Concussions can lead to a major brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This disease leads to many degenerative qualities that affect physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects in football players. In this review, the effects, evaluation, and prevention of concussions in football are discussed. Concussion rates and brain damage can both be decreased through improving equipment such as helmet design as well as better head-on collision rules being developed, and better evaluation techniques for taking concussed players out of games. Concussions have become a hot topic among athletic health care, but there is still a great deal to learn. One specific population has been studied and research produced showing the effects of wearing protective headgear. For some reason, adolescent soccer players are more apt to suffer a concussion. Taking steps to reduce recovery time and make concussions less common is something that should be addressed. The studies done showing the effects of headgear in adolescent soccer players is a topic that needs to be more widely known.

This paper presents an analysis of the effects of football wins percentage on universities’ retention rates. Using an OLS model we determine the causal relationship between football wins percentages, other independent variables, and universities’ retention rates. Throughout the paper we will define all relevant independent variables and present an overview of the data gathered in order to formulate our results. A theoretical framework will be presented followed by a thorough analysis of the OLS estimation results.

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome caused by injury to skeletal muscle, which results in leakage of large quantities of potentially toxic intracellular contents into plasma. Causes include direct trauma, drug use, genetic muscle diseases, hyperthermia, seizures, ischemia, and severe exertion. We describe a rare case of exercise related rhabdomyolysis of the abdominal wall in a 23-year-old football player. He presented with painless hematuria after starting a new abdominal workout routine to lose weight. Although the workout was not excessively strenuous, it involved new exercises targeting a poorly trained muscle group. Results of initial workup indicated severely elevated levels of creatine kinase. …

Fractures of the tibial tuberosity are uncommon injuries in adolescents, representing an estimated 0.4% to 2.7% of all pediatric fractures. Most of these injuries occur in young, active males commonly between the ages of 12 to 17 years. Sports, particularly those involving jumping or sudden starts and stops, are most often implicated. Injuries of the tibial tuberosity of both knees are especially rare, with little more than 30 cases reported in the past 60 years. Background: Long term neurologic injury and concussion have been identified as risks from participation in American football. Altering tackling form has been recommended to reduce the risk of neurologic injury caused by head accelerations when tackling. The purpose of this research is to determine the inter-rater agreement and validity of the Qualitative Youth Tackling System (QYTS), a six-item feedback scale to correct tackling form, when utilized by novice and expert raters.

Background: Many organizations have introduced frameworks to reduce the incidence of football related concussions through proper equipment fitting, coach education, and alteration of tackling technique.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of training in a vertical, head up tackling style on the number of head accelerations experienced while tackling in a controlled laboratory situation. The authors hypothesized that training in a head up tackling technique would reduce the severity of head acceleration experienced by participants.
