The New World Of Pet Prosthetics, Anna Brooks

Capstones

When an abandoned dog was found in Brooklyn with his paw gnawed off, the animal shelter had two options: amputate the leg, or put the dog down. But neither seemed like a solution. So they decided to do something different, and fit the dog for a prosthetic leg. Prosthetics for people have been around for millennia, and now these devices are moving into the animal kingdom. This story explores the new world of animal prosthetics, and how these devices have changed the lives of animals like Mr. Stubbs — the first alligator with a prosthetic tail — and saved the …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Oxidative stress can result from either the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or an impaired antioxidant system, or both. It causes damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Therefore, oxidative stress may be involved in carcinogenesis, and is associated with many types of cancer in dogs. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of malondialdehyde, protein hydroperoxides, glutathione, retinol and alpha-tocopherol between dogs with mast cell tumors and clinically healthy controls. Blood samples were obtained from eighteen clinically healthy dogs and fourteen dogs with spontaneous mast cell tumors. Malondialdehyde and protein hydroperoxides levels were measured by …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this retrospective study was to distinguish between dogs with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and non-PH by using parameters obtained from thoracic radiographs. Data of 72 dogs of small breeds aged more than 1 year old and weighing less than 10 kg were retrieved. Echocardiography was used as a gold standard to diagnose PH and separate the dogs into two groups: PH (n=15) and non-PH (n=57). Seven formulae were created from measurements on right lateral and ventrodorsal radiographic views. Five formulae from the ventrodorsal view provided an outcome that could differentiate PH and non-PH dogs. Two formulae are recommended …
