Integrating Food And Language Nutrition To Reach Georgia’S Children In Early Care And Education Environments, Jean O'Connor, Chinwe Ejikeme, Maria Fernandez, Kia Powell-Threets, Audrey Idaikkadar, Christi Kay, Emily Anne Vall, Kimberly Ross, Brenda Fitzgerald

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Background: Educational attainment and health are mutually reinforcing outcomes. Good health supports children in the achievement of academic milestones, such as grade-level reading, and is associated with higher socio-economic status, longer life expectancy, and lower lifelong chronic disease. Improving health outcomes and increasing the potential for high educational attainment is necessary for reducing disparities, improving population health, and reducing morbidity. Early childhood and associated settings present opportunities to address lifelong health.

Methods: To guide the development of programs to reach large numbers of children, we reviewed the literature associated with interventions during early childhood to promote healthy food consumption patterns …

Integrating Delivery And Financing Systems Across Sectors To Build A Culture Of Health, Glen P. Mays Jun 2016

Integrating Delivery And Financing Systems Across Sectors To Build A Culture Of Health, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

The delivery and financing systems for medical care, public health, and social and community services are powerful determinants of health and wellbeing for families and communities across the U.S. Unfortunately, these systems interact in complex and often poorly understood ways through fragmented funding streams, organizational relationships, information flows, and governance and decision-making structures. This session will feature new studies underway through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Systems for Action (S4A) Research Program to test multi-sector strategies for integrating delivery and financing systems to improve population health.

Featured speakers:

David Meltzer, MD, PhD, University of Chicago Urban Labs. Expanding a Comprehensive …

Integration Of Multi-Platform High-Dimensional Omic Data, Xuebei An May 2016

Integration Of Multi-Platform High-Dimensional Omic Data, Xuebei An

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

The development of high-throughput biotechnologies have made data accessible from different platforms, including RNA sequencing, copy number variation, DNA methylation, protein lysate arrays, etc. The high-dimensional omic data derived from different technological platforms have been extensively used to facilitate comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms and to determine personalized health treatments. Although vital to the progress of clinical research, the high dimensional multi-platform data impose new challenges for data analysis. Numerous studies have been proposed to integrate multi-platform omic data; however, few have efficiently and simultaneously addressed the problems that arise from high dimensionality and complex correlations.

In my dissertation, I …

A Disease-Based Approach To The Vertical And Horizontal Integration Of A Medical Curriculum, Charles A. Gullo Phd, Brian R. Dzwonek, Bobby L. Miller Apr 2016

A Disease-Based Approach To The Vertical And Horizontal Integration Of A Medical Curriculum, Charles A. Gullo Phd, Brian R. Dzwonek, Bobby L. Miller

Charles Gullo

As medical disciplines have become increasingly interdisciplinary and evidenced-based medicine is widely practiced, there is a need for curricula that reflect these changes. The newly revised LCME standards 1.1 Strategic Planning and Continuous Quality Improvement and 8.3 Curricular Design, Review, Revision/Content Monitoring require ongoing curricular review to assure accreditation compliancy. We have completed a comprehensive review of our curriculum and have moved from a discipline-based curriculum to that of one that focuses on a systems/disease-based model. The approach allows for a more horizontally integrated curriculum in the preclinical years, while the use of 115 distinct disease and eight themes creates …

Integrating Health Services & Systems: What We Know, Think We Know, And Need To Learn, Glen P. Mays Mar 2016

Integrating Health Services & Systems: What We Know, Think We Know, And Need To Learn, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

The delivery and financing systems for medical care, public health, and social and community services pursue many common goals and serve overlapping groups of families and communities. Unfortunately, in most American communities these systems interact in complex and often poorly understood ways through fragmented funding vehicles, information flows, governance and decision-making structures, institutional relationships, implementation rules and strategies, and professional and interpersonal connections. New research approaches are required to untangle these interactions and expose novel pathways of influence that can support equitable improvements in service delivery, resource use, health impact, and wellbeing. This presentation will summarize evidence from recent studies …
