Ramadan & Pregnancy, Omar Rizvi
Ramadan & Pregnancy, Omar Rizvi
Celebration of Learning
Fasting during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, is one of the five pillars of Islam and is fard (obligatory) for all Muslims physically and mentally capable of doing so. In the Qur’an, it is made abundantly clear that religion and its acts of worship are not meant to pose undue difficulty or hardship (Qur’an 22:78, 5:6, 2:185). My paper explores the Islamic definitions for “unnecessary difficulty” and “physically capable” specifically in regards to pregnant women. At what point does fasting incur significant, if any, damage to the fetus that it should prevent the mother from participating in …
Hiv Vaccines: Progress, Limitations And A Crispr/Cas9 Vaccine, Omar A. Garcia Martinez
Hiv Vaccines: Progress, Limitations And A Crispr/Cas9 Vaccine, Omar A. Garcia Martinez
Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
ABSTRACT: The HIV-1 pandemic continues to thrive due to ineffective HIV-1 vaccines. Historically, the world’s most infectious diseases, such as polio and smallpox, have been eradicated or have come close to eradication due to the advent of effective vaccines. Highly active antiretroviral therapy is able to delay the onset of AIDS but can neither rid the body of HIV-1 proviral DNA nor prevent further transmission. A prophylactic vaccine that prevents the various mechanisms HIV-1 has to evade and attack our immune system is needed to end the HIV-1 pandemic. Recent advances in engineered nuclease systems, like the CRISPR/Cas9 system, have …
Impacts From The Use Of Antibiotics In Livestock: Methods Of Transmission Of Antibiotic Resistance From Livestock To Humans, Kristin M. Walden
Impacts From The Use Of Antibiotics In Livestock: Methods Of Transmission Of Antibiotic Resistance From Livestock To Humans, Kristin M. Walden
Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Antibiotic use in livestock production has been around since the 1950s. Antibiotic feed is used in livestock and other meat producing animals for three reasons: illness prevention, illness treatment, and growth promotion. Unfortunately, since the time that antibiotics were first invented, antibiotic resistant bacteria have become a threat to public health. There are many studies showing methods of transmission of antibiotic resistance from livestock to humans. Antibiotic resistance can spread from livestock to soil, water, insects, and food, which ultimately comes into contact with humans. A proposed study to measure antibiotic resistance when eliminating antibiotic feed will provide a hypothesis …
Assessing An Ethical Global Service Learning Experience, Chelsey Peterson
Assessing An Ethical Global Service Learning Experience, Chelsey Peterson
Communication Sciences and Disorders: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
With more college students going abroad to developing countries for research and service work, it is important to understand the possible benefits and harms that can occur during such an experience. When professors take their students abroad, they need to facilitate student learning to enhance benefits and lessen harms. Student reflection has proven to be a way to assess student learning; there needs to be an approach to assessing reflection during service learning experiences to ensure the effectiveness of an ethical experience. This study is a replication of a pilot study using a Service Learning Engagement Rubric to assess student …
The Elicitation Of Descriptive And Procedural Discourse In Expressive Aphasia, Kailey E. Vitale
The Elicitation Of Descriptive And Procedural Discourse In Expressive Aphasia, Kailey E. Vitale
Communication Sciences and Disorders: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Currently, there are no clear clinical guidelines for determining the method that will elicit the best discourse sample from individuals with expressive aphasia. Additionally, there is no universal method used to evaluate discourse samples. Archival data was collected from a 42-year old male who experienced a cerebrovascular accident 15 years ago and was then diagnosed with expressive aphasia. Two consecutive 8-week courses of treatment periods were analyzed to determine the best discourse elicitation and evaluation method. A comparison of descriptive and procedural discourse elicitation techniques revealed that procedural discourse results in a higher average percent Correct Information Units (%CIUs), words …

Challenges Of Adoptive (T-)Cell Transfer Immunotherapy For Cancer, Aaron Volk
Challenges Of Adoptive (T-)Cell Transfer Immunotherapy For Cancer, Aaron Volk
Biology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Background and significance: The rebirth of the theory of immunosurveillance in 2001 rejuvenated interest in anticancer immunotherapies. In particular, T-cell-based therapies have garnered substantial interest due to the robustness and tumor antigen-specific cytotoxicity of T-cell anticancer immune responses.
Hypothesis: The efficacy of adoptive cell transfer (ACT) T-cell immunotherapy could significantly improve and gain widespread approval if future innovations in ACT-based approaches account for the pro- and antitumoral properties of non-CD8+ lineages of effector T-cells, evasion of T-cell antitumor immunity, and tumor-induced suppression of antitumor immunity.
Problem Analysis: Despite numerous reports of highly successful ACT-based clinical trials, no such therapy …

Sub-Saharan Africa’S “Other Diseases”: A Comparison Of The Global Response To Neglected Tropical Diseases And Hiv/Aids In Ghana, Rebecca Brosch
Sub-Saharan Africa’S “Other Diseases”: A Comparison Of The Global Response To Neglected Tropical Diseases And Hiv/Aids In Ghana, Rebecca Brosch
Political Science: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) refer to a group of diseases that affect 1.4 billion people worldwide, most commonly in low and low-middle income nations. These conditions can cause disabling and disfiguring effects that keep those inflicted from escaping poverty, leading to increased economic losses in already impoverished areas in Ghana and the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. Although NTDs affect significantly more of the Ghanaian population, more government resources are given to HIV/AIDS (which only affects an estimated 1.5% of citizens). This research identifies the current response to NTDs (including government policy and NGO support) as well as how more global …
The Effects Of Allergies And Anaphylaxis On The Body And Mind: A Survey Of Opinions And Knowledge On These Disorders, Kathryn E. O'Brien
The Effects Of Allergies And Anaphylaxis On The Body And Mind: A Survey Of Opinions And Knowledge On These Disorders, Kathryn E. O'Brien
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
Despite common knowledge, allergies and anaphylaxis are considered disabilities. As such, these disorders affect the daily lives of those who have them, including one's mental health. In this paper, all the nuances of allergies and anaphylaxis will be discussed as the etiology and scientific aspects of allergies, anaphylaxis, and hypersensitivity are distinguished from one another. Furthermore, the findings are reported from two surveys; an assessment of how well educated and prepared teachers are for students with allergies and whether other students with food allergies have had similar experiences to the author's and those described in research by other studies concerning …
The Ethical Issues Of Dumping Electronic Waste In India, Krista E. Dawson
The Ethical Issues Of Dumping Electronic Waste In India, Krista E. Dawson
Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest
Electronic waste, also referred to as “e-waste,” is all waste made from electronic products such as computers, mobile phones, digital music players, refrigerators, washing machines, and TV’s (Pinto, 2008). There is e-waste produced in the manufacturing process as well as the final disposal of the product. Although developed countries consume most electronics, it is increasingly common for countries that are still developing to possess electronic goods (Larrdis, 2011). Use of technology and connection to worldwide networking is a huge step for the progress of these countries, but having gained a “part” of the developed world without the associated infrastructure to …
Breaking Down Barriers: The Intersection Of Medicine And Faith, Kaitlyn Lindgren, Ashley Kethcart
Breaking Down Barriers: The Intersection Of Medicine And Faith, Kaitlyn Lindgren, Ashley Kethcart
Honors Program: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
While medicine and faith are often presented as contradictory concepts, the two play complementary roles in people's health. Christian prayer and Buddhist meditation practices have an impact on health, as well as alternative forms of medicine. These influences can work in tandem to increase the mental and physical health of all people and also demonstrate that science and faith need not always be in opposition.
