Nurse Manager Caring And Workplace Bullying In Nursing : The Relationship Between Staff Nurses' Perceptions Of Nurse Manager Caring Behaviors And Their Perception Of Exposure To Workplace Bullying Within Multiple Healthcare Settings, Lynda Diana Olender
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study examined the relationship between staff nurses’ perception of nurse manager caring behaviors and their perceived exposure to workplace bullying within multiple healthcare settings. It was based on the theoretical position that caring promotes reciprocal caring and healing for each other and for the larger universe as informed by Watson’s theory of human caring (1979, 2006, 2008). Results indicated a statistically significant, negative, linear relationship between the CFS-CM and the NAQ-R (r = -.534, p < .001), meaning that as staff nurses’ perceptions of their nurse manager caring increased, their perception of exposure to negative acts (meeting the definition of workplace bullying) significantly decreased. The sample consisted of primarily older, more experienced, staff nurses who worked 10 years or longer within their work environment. Data analysis also revealed that staff nurses who were females and those who worked in Medical/Surgical settings were significantly more likely to perceive their managers as caring (p < .05 respectively) and that a high workload significantly influenced the staff nurses perception of exposure to workplace bullying (p < .05). In view of the predicted nursing shortages as baby-boomer nurses retire at the same time the demand for health care is rising (AACN, 2009), these findings highlight the importance of caring leadership for the health and availability of nurses at the bedside, and may lead to shifting work priorities for nurse managers. Study findings may also foster the design and implementation of a caring curriculum and caring competencies applicable for the nurse managers’ role either within nursing academic or clinical settings.

Caregivers Of Older Adults: Burden, Perception Of Strain, And Health, Juana Ferrerosa Phd, Msn, Rn, Phn
Dissertations
Background: By the year 2030, the older population in the United States is projected to double from 35 to 70 million. Consequently, increasing the number of informal caregivers required to care for an aging population. Research suggests that levels of caregiver strain and their ability to cope can impact the health of caregivers. Tsai's (2003) Middle-Range Theory of Caregiver Stress guided this study and was modified to present an innovative approach which used perceived caregiver strain as a specific stressor in the Control Process of the model; it provided a basis for examining caregiver strain and its effect on the …

Nurse education programs are implementing standardized assessments without evaluating their effectiveness. Graduates of associate degree nursing programs continue to be unsuccessful with licensure examinations, despite standardized testing and stronger admission criteria. This problem is also prevalent for LPN-to-RN education programs due to a lack of research on this group of graduates, who by all accounts should be successful in nursing education based on their work experience and prior nursing education. Findings of this quantitative, non-experimental descriptive correlational study are presented to determine the effectiveness of standardized testing from Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) as it relates to identifying at-risk LPN-RN students …

Preparing Rn’S For The Online Learning Environment, Jayne Josephsen, Vivian Schrader
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Adult learners returning to online education can face considerable barriers to the successful completion of their degree. These obstacles may be due to work and family obligations, lack of familiarity with course and academic requirements, the use of educational technology, or lack of self-direction in their learning. The authors conceptualized, developed, and implemented a preparatory course in an RN-BS Online Completion program designed to familiarize students with online learning and technological and personal skill requirements that could lead to academic success. This article outlines course development and implementation, syllabus and course objectives related to distance learning, and assignments and rubrics …
Barriers To Diabetes Care In Appalachia: Challenges Faced By Healthcare Providers, Megan Cullinan
Barriers To Diabetes Care In Appalachia: Challenges Faced By Healthcare Providers, Megan Cullinan
Senior Honors Theses
Appalachia is a region of the United States that is characterized by high rates of poverty, low levels of education, elevated incidence of chronic disease, and inadequate healthcare. Compared to the national average, the area has an elevated incidence of Type 2 diabetes. Though this disease process is an issue that must be addressed by healthcare providers, these providers face many challenges and barriers to providing adequate care for this disease in the Appalachian population. Barriers to care include geography with limited transportation, an inadequate number of healthcare personnel, patient inability to afford healthcare, patient attitudes toward diabetes care, and …

Marquette University, 2013
Patient empowerment has been advocated as a way to engage patients in self-management of chronic illnesses in emerging patient-centered models for healthcare improvement. The majority of research on patient empowerment has studied empowerment as an outcome in outpatient settings, with little attention to provider processes used to empower patients during a hospitalization. Post-operative patients with life-threatening chronic illnesses face multiple illness-related transitions associated with the recovery from their surgery and taking on the role of managing their …

Abstract Pain Management and the Postoperative Orthopedic Patient: An Exploration of Evidence to Empower the Patient and Improve Current Pain Management Outcomes, Smith, M. A.; Master of Science in Nursing Problem and Significance Statement: Pain is a serious health problem in the United States. The problem is so significant that it costs $560-635 billion annually; approximately $2,000 per resident. On a local orthopedic unit, patient satisfaction scores related to pain management are lower than targeted, patients are not currently requested to give input to their own pain management regimen, and no distinct plan exists for pain management after surgery. Application Of The Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory: The Community Context, Rebecca Green
Application Of The Self Care Deficit Nursing Theory: The Community Context, Rebecca Green
Rebecca D. Green
The purpose of this article is to consider the basic tenets of Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory in application to children with special health care needs as an aggregate in a larger community. The cases of Javon and Elizabeth are revisited and evaluated within the context of community. Orem's concept of conditioning factors is linked with the public health concepts of social determinants of health; and her concept of universal self-care requisites are interpreted within the context of the World Health Organization's definition of health. Finally, the concept of intersectionality is introduced as a linking framework for consideration of these …

Psychological Distress In African American Grandmothrs Raising Grandchildren: The Contribution Of Child Behavior Problems, Physical Health, And Family Resources, Susan Kelley, Deborah Whitley, Peter Campos
Deborah M. Whitley
Diminished psychological health has been identified among caregiving grandmothers. The intent of this investigation was to examine psychological distress levels, as well as their predictors, in a sample of 480 caregiving African American grandmothers, mean age 56 years. Almost 40% (39.8%) of participants had clinically elevated psychological distress scores. Results of hierarchical multiple regression indicated that internalizing and externalizing child behavior problems, poor grandmother physical health, younger age of grandmother, and lack of family resources predicted 31% of the variance in psychological distress. Results provide direction for nursing interventions aimed at enhancing the psychological well-being of caregiving grandmothers.

Lisa S. Segre
OBJECTIVE: Mothers of preterm infants in a hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at risk for clinically significant depression and anxiety, but for these women their own treatment is likely a secondary priority. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of an evidence-based, nurse-delivered, on-site depression treatment: listening visits (LVs). STUDY DESIGN: Therapeutic LVs were delivered on site to 23 distressed mothers of NICU infants. The intervention was conducted by a neonatal nurse practitioner and the outcome was examined in an open-trial, pre-post evaluation. RESULT: A part-time nurse practitioner delivered six LVs to each participant within a 1-month …

Teaching Information Literacy Skills To Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Collaborative Approach, Suzanne E. Zentz, Kimberly J. Whalen
Suzanne E Zentz, DNP, RN, CNE
Background
An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.
Implementation
The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Historically, students enrolled in their senior level undergraduate nursing research/EBP course underwent one library instruction session with the nursing librarian to reinforce search …
