Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

A primary cause of morbidity and mortality following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is respiratory compromise, regardless of the level of trauma. In particular, SCI at mid-cervical regions targets degeneration of both descending bulbospinal respiratory axons and cell bodies of phrenic motor neurons, resulting in deficits in the function of the diaphragm, the primary muscle of inspiration. Contusion-type trauma to the cervical spinal cord is one of the most common forms of human SCI; however, few studies have evaluated mid-cervical contusion in animal models or characterized consequent histopathological and functional effects of degeneration of phrenic motor neuron-diaphragm circuitry. We have …

Can The Survival Processing Effect Be Replicated In Non-Ancestral Survival Scenarios?, Ciro Griffiths Jun 2012

Can The Survival Processing Effect Be Replicated In Non-Ancestral Survival Scenarios?, Ciro Griffiths

Honors Theses

When primed to think about one’s survival, participants experience an increase in recall for a set of words. This result called the ‘survival processing effect’ was initially found for participants primed to think about their survival in an ancestral environment. The present study was designed to access whether the effect could be replicated in non-ancestral scenarios. Analyses showed that the effect could be replicated and that non-ancestral scenarios even led to a slightly higher level of recall than the traditional ancestral scenario. Various characteristics of the modern scenarios are believed to have been responsible for this finding including an increase …

The Extent To Which “Death And Disgust” Thoughts Influence Recall In Survival Processing Scenarios, Melanie Kramer Jun 2012

The Extent To Which “Death And Disgust” Thoughts Influence Recall In Survival Processing Scenarios, Melanie Kramer

Honors Theses

Recently, researchers have found that survival processing enhances retention. This led the authors to speculate that our memory systems have been fine tuned to remember survival relevant information. One question that might be asked is what is it about thinking about one’s survival that aids memory? As an extension of my previous research, this project examines the extent to which death and disgust influence recall in survival processing scenarios, determining whether or not death and disgust play a role in the memory enhancement associated with survival processing scenarios. There are four conditions in this study differing in the amount of …

The Resilient Local Health Department: Attributes Of Survival During The Economic Crisis, Paul C. Erwin, Gulzar H. Shah Apr 2012

The Resilient Local Health Department: Attributes Of Survival During The Economic Crisis, Paul C. Erwin, Gulzar H. Shah

Health Policy and Management Faculty Presentations

The purpose of this research is to explore the attributes of local health departments (LHDs) which have survived the recent economic crises without loss of staff. A retrospective cohort study is being conducted, using the 2005 and 2010 Profile of Local Health Departments datasets from the National Association of County and City Health Officials. LHDs which responded to both surveys and which provided data on full-time equivalents (FTEs) and expenditures are included for analysis. LHDs are categorized as resilient or non-resilient based on whether the LHD gained or did not lose FTEs between 2005 and 2010 (“resilient LHD”) vs. those …

Growth And Survival Of Brown Shrimp (Farfantepenaeus Aztecus) In A Closed Recirculation Seawater System At Different Salinities, Roberto Pérez-Castañeda, Jesús Genaro Sánchez-Martínez, Gabriel Aguirre-Guzmán

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Growth and survival of juvenile brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus) in a closed recirculation seawater system at two salinities (33 and 38‰) were evaluated during 4 weeks in experimental tanks. Although the specific growth rate (SGR) was slightly higher at the treatment of 38‰ than at 33‰, no significant differences were detected for the different time intervals analyzed; however, the growth in terms of both body weight and total length was significantly faster at 38‰. In this regard, the increase in weight and total length obtained at 38‰ were 0.33 g/week and 2.15 mm/week, respectively, whereas at 33‰ were 0.21 g/week …

Managing Soft Tissue Sarcomas In A Developing Country: Are Prognostic Factors Similar To Those Of Developed World?, Irfan Qadir, Masood Umer, Hafiz Muhammad Umer, Nasir Uddin, Farrok Karson, Muhammad Sharoz Rabbani

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background: Managing soft tissue sarcomas (STS) in a developing country with limited financial resources and a poor health referral system is a challenge. Presenting late, these extremity STS are prone to recurrence despite apparently complete resection. This study aimed to explore and compare the impact of clinico-pathological factors on recurrence and survival in Pakistan with the corresponding figures quoted from the developed world.
Methods: An institutional review was performed on all patients with primary STS of the extremities operated on between 1994 and 2008. The prognostic influence of clinical, pathologic, and treatment variables on local recurrence free survival (LRFS), metastasis …

Long-Term Outcome Of Breast Cancer Patients With One To Two Nodes Involved-Application Of Nodal Ratio, Patricia Tai, Kurian Joseph, Ali El-Gayed, Edward Yu

Edward Yu

Abstract: Nodal ratio (NR) is defined as the number of involved nodes to the number of nodes examined. There is limited information on the application of NR on population data. Previous reports in breast cancer generally analyzed one to three positive axillary nodes as a single group. This study investigates whether one to three positive axillary nodes is a homogeneous group in prognosis by comparing one to two positive nodes to three positive nodes. The population-based registry of a Canadian province from 1981 through 1995 was searched. As the reliability of nodal assessment depends on the number of nodes sampled, …
