And How Will You Remember Me, My Child? Redefining Fatherhood In Turkey, Gary Barker, Deniz Dogruoz, Debbie Rogow
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité profiles the AÇEV Father Support Program, a series of 13-week-long support groups for fathers across Turkey. Fatherhood (and men’s roles in the lives of children in general) is an ideal starting point for engaging men in gender equality for two key reasons: most men want to be involved in the lives of children, whether their own biological children or younger siblings, nieces, or nephews; and responsibility for the care of children is at the heart of gender inequality. The program reached nearly 10,000 men, teaching them about their role in the development of their children and …

Orbital Emphysema Due To Nose Blowing, Mustafa Sever, Tunç Büyükyilmaz
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Orbital emphysema is a rare ocular emergency in the absence of trauma, sinusitis and/or surgical intervention. We report a case of orbital emphysema in a 29-year-old male caused by forceful blowing of the nose. The patient presented with sudden and painful onset of right periorbital swelling and nose-bleed following forceful blowing of the nose. There was no history of sinusitis, facial trauma or previous surgery. Examination of the patient disclosed crepitant eyelid swelling, ptosis, and mild unilateral exophthalmos and inferomedial strabismus in the neutral position. Otorhinolaryngologic and ophthalmic examinations were accompanied by computerized tomography, which demonstrated areas of emphysema in …

Detection Of Mycoplasma Hyopneumoniae In Pigs In Turkey, Arzu Funda Bağcigi̇l, Serkan İki̇z, N. Yakut Özgür
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae is the primary agent of enzootic pneumonia in pigs. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of M. hyopneumoniae in pigs raised in Turkey. Samples were obtained from the lungs of 286 pigs, which had already been separated from the carcasses at slaughter. Lung tissues were homogenized in 5 ml of Friis medium, the suspensions were inoculated into Friis medium, and then incubated at 37 °C until they developed an acid color change or for 21 days. Cultures were identified by M. hyopneumoniae-specific PCR. M. hyopneumoniae was recovered from 2 (0.70%) of the 286 lung …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Human fascioliasis, caused by Fasciola hepatica, is emerging as an important chronic zoonotic disease in many areas of the world, including Turkey. It primarily involves the liver and may also cause severe damage in the tissue. Herein we report on a patient with ectopic intra-abdominal fascioliasis that presented to our clinic with abdominal pain and distention. Physical and radiological examination as well as an exploratory laparotomy revealed a 10 × 10-cm mass in the splenic flexura of the colon and multiple cystic formations in the liver, spleen, and omentum, which mimicked peritoneal carcinoma. Histopathological examination revealed a granulomatous reaction due …
