Palliative Care Patients And Their Quality Of Life As Perceived By The Patient And Their Caregiver, Debra L. Dignan Dec 2008

Palliative Care Patients And Their Quality Of Life As Perceived By The Patient And Their Caregiver, Debra L. Dignan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This quantitative pilot study examined the quality of life of palliative care patients as perceived by the patient and their caregiver. Patients with palliative care consults at The University of Colorado and The Medical Center of Aurora were asked to participate in this study. The McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire survey tool was selected to measure the patient's quality of life due to its validity and reliability in measuring quality of life in the palliative care patient population. The McGill Quality of Life Questionnaire consists of five distinct subscales: physical well-being, physical symptoms, psychological symptoms, existential well-being, and support. Sixteen …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Health-Related Quality Of Life Among A Sample Of Treatment- And Pension-Seeking Deployed Canadian Forces Peacekeeping Veterans, Don Richardson, Mary E. Long, David J. Pedlar, Jon D Elhai

MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre

Objectives: To examine the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in deployed Canadian Forces peacekeeping veterans, addressing associations with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression severity. Methods: Participants (n = 125) were consecutive male veterans who were referred for a psychiatric assessment. Instruments administered included the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale, Hamilton Depression Scale, Short-Form-36 Health Survey, and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Mental HRQOL was significantly lower for peacekeepers with, than without, PTSD. Using univariate analyses, PTSD and depression severity were each significantly negatively related to mental HRQOL. In sequential regression analyses controlling for age, we found that PTSD and depression severity significantly predicted …

Time-Related Centile Ranges For Quality Of Life Outcomes In Renal Transplantation, Katy Garth May 2008

Time-Related Centile Ranges For Quality Of Life Outcomes In Renal Transplantation, Katy Garth

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to create time-related centile ranges that could be
used as benchmarks for evaluating and monitoring quality of life (QoL) following kidney transplantation. QoL is commonly viewed as an important indicator of successful outcomes in chronic disease including kidney transplantation. Despite extensive research documenting the value of QoL, routine measurement of QoL outcomes in clinical practice as a means of patient evaluation to augment clinical care has not been widely accepted. Lack of benchmarks for interpreting QoL scores may contribute to the reluctance to incorporate QoL measures into clinical care. The research question and study …

Factors Associated With Perceived Burden, Resourcefulness, And Quality Of Life In Female Family Members Of Adults With Serious Mental Illness, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Abir Bekhet, M. Jane Suresky

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

BACKGROUND: Each year, 54 million American adults are affected by serious mental illness. Most of these persons depend on female family members for support or assistance, and unless these women are resourceful, they may experience considerable burden, stigma by association, depressive thoughts, and poor quality of life. OBJECTIVE:In this study, we examined the associations between characteristics of female family members (age, race, education), adults with serious mental illness (age, diagnosis), and the family situation (relationship, living arrangements, care provided) and caregivers' burden, stigma, depressive cognitions, resourcefulness, and quality of life.STUDY DESIGN:In this descriptive, cross-sectional study, a convenience …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: We aimed to assess vitamin-D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism in postmenopausal osteoporotic Turkish women as well as the impact of this on diagnosis, treatment and quality of life. Materials and Methods: Seventy postmenopausal osteoporotic women and 71 postmenopausal healthy women constituted the disease and control groups, respectively. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood of all participants and analyzed for the TaqI gene polymorphism of the VDR gene. The osteoporotic group was taking calcitonin, alendronate, calcitriol and elementary calcium, while the control group was taking only vitamin D and calcium. Quality of life of patients was measured by Nottingham Health …

The Investigation Of Treatment Outcomes For Adults With Chronic Brain Injury Following Intensive Multidisciplinary Treatment, Donna Mineo Fitzgerald-Dejean

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although communication sciences and disorders (COMD) research supports intensive treatment for individuals with chronic brain injury, funding to provide these services is limited. This study explored the use of interdepartmental university resources to provide an intensive, multidisciplinary chronic brain injury program. Methodologically, treatment regimes were designed with clinical faculty as practicum experiences for COMD master’s degree students. Subjects with a single onset head injury or cerebral vascular accident greater than one year were recruited to participate in the Intensive Treatment, Weekly Treatment or Control Groups. Pre, Post, and Post-Post Testing were used to measure cognitive-linguistic, quality of life and physical …

Two Perspectives Of Proxy Reporting Of Health-Related Quality Of Life Using The Eq-5d: An Investigation Of Agreement, Steven Mcphail, Elaine Beller, Terry Haines Dec 2007

Two Perspectives Of Proxy Reporting Of Health-Related Quality Of Life Using The Eq-5d: An Investigation Of Agreement, Steven Mcphail, Elaine Beller, Terry Haines

Elaine Beller

Background: Proxy-reporting has been proposed as an alternative to self-report of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients with poor cognition. There are 2 possible perspectives from which to complete a proxy-report, answer as the patient would (proxy-patient) or from the proxy's own perspective (proxy-proxy). Most research has not differentiated between perspectives. Agreement between patient and proxy-reports from either perspective has not been investigated using the Euroqol-5D (EQ-5D) among elderly hospital patients undergoing rehabilitation.

Objectives: Identify agreement levels between proxy-patient and patient self-report as well as proxy-proxy and patient self-report of the EQ-5D and investigate interaction effects of timing (admission …
