Altered Placental And Fetal Expression Of Igfs And Igf-Binding Proteins Associated With Intrauterine Growth Restriction In Fetal Sheep During Early And Mid-Pregnancy., Barbra De Vrijer, Meredith L Davidsen, Randall B Wilkening, Russell V Anthony, Timothy Regnault

Paediatrics Publications

The insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are postulated to be altered in association with the development of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The present studies examined placental and fetal hepatic mRNA concentration of components of the IGF system at two time points (55 and 90 d gestational age, dGA; Term 147 dGA) in a hyperthermia (HT)-induced sheep model of placental insufficiency-IUGR. Maternal plasma insulin and IGF-I were constant at 55 and 90 dGA and were unaffected by treatment. Umbilical vein insulin concentrations tended to be reduced at 90 dGA following HT exposure. Caruncle IGF-I mRNA was increased at 90 dGA in HT …

Ewe And Wether Trials - Tools For Benchmarking Your Sheep Genetics, Lock Butler

Bulletins 4000 -

Research and sheep productivity trial results demonstrate a huge variability in genetic productivity between flocks. For example a range of up to 2 kg clean fleece weight, 5 microns, 55 percentage points in lambing percentage and 20 kg live weight, can lead to big differences in gross margin between flocks.

There is an opportunity for genetic improvement, depending on your current ram source or sires performance. For example, Western Australian (WA) Wether Trial results suggest half the WA flocks could improve clean fleece weight per head by half a kilogram or more. The trial results suggest that this could occur …

Changes In Faecal Egg Counts At Different Hours Of The Day And Relationship Between Faecal Egg Count And Parasite Burden In Sheep Naturally Infected With Dicrocoelium Dendriticum, Bayram Şenli̇k, Veli̇ Yilgör Çirak, Mustafa Muz, Recep Tinar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was carried out to determine the variations in the number of eggs excreted in the faeces at different hours of the day and the correlation between faecal egg counts and fluke burden in sheep naturally infected with Dicrocoelium dendriticum. For this purpose faecal samples were taken from 14 sheep at 1-h intervals from 07^{00} to 19^{00}. Faecal samples were examined by modified Benedek sedimentation method and mean egg counts per gram of faeces (EPG) for each hour (average of group) were calculated. In general, egg counts were found higher in faecal samples taken in the afternoon than …

The Importance Of Refractoriness In Ovine Antral Digestive And Interdigestive Motility, Krzysztof Waldemar Romanski Jan 2006

The Importance Of Refractoriness In Ovine Antral Digestive And Interdigestive Motility, Krzysztof Waldemar Romanski

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this work was to find possible differences between the effects of anticholinergic drug administration during the duodenal phase 1 or phase 2a of migrating myoelectric complex on antral spike burst amplitude in fasted and non-fasted sheep. Eight adult rams possessing bipolar electrodes in the antrum and small intestine were used in the study. Feeding increased significantly the spike burst amplitude range from 60-110 to 80-160 µV. The effects of hexamethonium (2 mg/kg), atropine (0.1 mg/kg) and pirenzepine (0.5 mg/kg) given i.v. during phase 1 of the migrating myoelectric complex (expressed as per cent of control) in non-fasted …

Abortions In Sheep Due To Listeria Ivanovii In The Kars Region, Mi̇that Şahi̇n, Enver Beytut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This report describes an outbreak of Listeria ivanovii-induced abortion in sheep in the Kars region. In a flock of 120 sheep raised in Taşlıdere, a village in the region of Arpaçay, in Kars, some ewes in the last stages of gestation aborted in March, 2004. Necropsy was conducted on 5 aborted foetuses. Livers of the aborted foetuses showed diffuse necrotic foci. Histologically, the liver and lungs of aborted foetuses revealed diffuse coagulative necrosis infiltrated with macrophages and neutrophils. Bacterial culture from the liver and lungs of foetuses found pure growth of L. ivanovii subsp. ivanovii.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to compare the growth and survival characteristics of crossbred lambs produced by mating Kıvırcık ewes with German Black-Headed Mutton (GBM) x Kıvırcık (F_2) rams, GBM x Merino (F_2) rams, as well as the growth and survival characteristics of purebred Kıvırcık lambs. The data were obtained from 59 (GBM x Kıvırcık) x Kıvırcık, 59 (GBM x Merino) x Kıvırcık, and 60 purebred Kıvırcık lambs. The birth weights of (GBM x Kıvırcık) x Kıvırcık, (GBM x Merino) x Kıvırcık, and purebred Kıvırcık lambs were 4.08, 4.32, and 3.85 kg, respectively. The differences of birth weight between the genotype …
